Water mains

A non return valve is required in the UK on any mains pipe that is liable to be contaminated by hot water from your plumbing system.

As you are aware......when you heat water it expands and on a typical French system it expands back down the water main, It has always amazed me that the French didn't insist on a non return valve years ago.....

....the next requirement to come along will be an expansion vessel on the chauffe eau.

And of course you never switch the supply off or have a pressure drop as  the mains are worked upon, presumably there is no chance of anyone in your house flushing the toilet at the same time as the washing machine is on etc etc........so you should be absolutely fine and should not under any circumstances install non return valves. However for the rest of human kind its maybe a good idea........

Non return valves on domestic shower mixers have been mandatory in the uk since 1999 due to  potential back syphonage from the humble domestic shower.......rarely 100ft up in the air. Check Water supply (Water Fittings) Regs if at all interested in the reasons..........

The post was intended as a light hearted demonstration as to the why.........

Amen
