can anyone let me know what the french word is for the metal fastening that fits on window/shutter to keep it open slightly and securely please

french windows open inwards...I use the squiggly ones ...if required small padlocks can be used with them.

Ours were not lockable and we used padlocks with them and that worked just fine.

... or the straight "crochet" with the bracket with a row of holes... like this http://tinyurl.com/3bmfa8c  (I've showen the first one I came to, and it's aluminium, but they do steel ones too which are more common and cheaper).

We put them on too Sid, but you cannot lock them, hence we had two lots of fasteners on our shutters.

Ah OK, for "securely" I read "not flapping about", but you mean secure against breaking and entering! We have separate locking devices besides the "crochets", not that any of this is much use on a wooden shutter against a really determined burglar.
