1.
How near to bordeaux do you want to be is 50 mins to far?
It is a bit further than we are looking for to be honest. We were hoping to try out a bit of city living as we've been isolated out here in the sticks for so long! (not that i'll really be up for much socialising at that stage!). It's proving pretty difficult as all of the immobiliers we've spoken to work on rental contracts for a standard 3 years - they really can't help us for 3 or 4 months. Anyway, fingers crossed! And thank you to everyone who's posted so far. suzi www.patiras.com
2. Does anyone know of anyone in the legal profession who has moved from England to France? My brother-in-law is a lawyer in Britain, is contemplating re-locating to France and would like advice as to what the options are with regards to practicing here / re-qualifying etc. Any help or advice would be gratefully received. Thank you
3. Has anyone come across any websites or estate agents which specifically deal with unusual or special properties? The house we're trying to sell is on a little island near Bordeaux so i think it falls into that category, and although we've found no end of websites, nothing really jumps out. Thanks in advance Suzi & Al www.patiras.com
4. We live on a small island in the Gironde – Idyllic in the summer, but a bit less fun when the north wind doth blow and the garden doth fill with mud! To cap it all, we are expecting our second baby boy in February. Not only is climbing in and out of boats getting a bit tricky with an ever increasing bump, but we live in terror of trying out the local Bateau des Pompiers by going into labour on the island (no doubt at night, during a storm!)! In short we are desperately seeking a house to rent for 3-4 months over the winter (Dec / Jan to Mar / Apr) on the mainland, in, or near to Bordeaux ( and the maternity hospital!)! Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received - maybe someone knows of a gite in the area that may be available? Thank You. Suzi

We're planning on DIY'ing the gates & found self-close hinges in Leroy Merlin. They have springs that cost about 10euros - but as my hubby pointed out someone could just push the gate to & it wouldn't latch. I think we're going to go for their more expensive option which is a hinge with a double action- ie closes the gate until nearly closed & then fores it to latch itself - they cost between 40 & 60euros each. i think they're designed for doors (they were in the door furniture / handly section) but should work for gates. There are also gates in their made-to-measure range that appear to comply with height / unclimbability rules. we haven't yet found a double-handed latch mechanism, but would be grateful if anyone else has & can share the info. suzi & Al www.patiras.com

7. hello a couple of things that might be helpful (sorry if you already know all this): -Our hot water is electric & only heats up at night when we pay the cheaper rate - probably worth looking at if you plan to heat your water this way as our difference is 0.0453euros at night to 0.076euros in the day. -we have a portable liquid fuel heater & an electric portable plug-in heater which we use occasionally. although we're not sure how much teh electric one is costing us yet (only bought it this year) it is nowhere near as good at warming up our lounge (which is 40sqm & has a concrete floor) as the petrol one. This cost us about 75euros & we buy a new tub of fuel (at about 12euros a time) about once a fortnight. we don't keep it on all day... obviously if you use it more it costs more... -electric showers - i think i'm right in saying you can't buy them here & be careful about the law with regards to electrical equipment in bathrooms in France. We tried to buy them last year for our gites & were confronted with lots of tutting, sharp intakes of breath & head shaking from our local suppliers. apart from that, our radiators run from a wood burner which we highly recommend, although it is ancient & i have no idea if you can still get them installed! hope this is of some help & good luck with your project suzi www.patiras.com
8. Hmm, we wondered about this, but decided that unless we actually tell people which dates they can arrive, we'll still end up with odd weeks free - eg we have mostly 2 weekers but they don't join up so now we need a 1 week booking to fill August in each of our gites! We've also had the "do we put these people off because we just told someone else that it was free for the same week" dilema. We eventually decided to go with the No deposit = No booking route... luckily for us it turned out to be another member of the same party, but it is really frustrating! Suzi www.patiras.com
9. This is our first year. We have 2 gites and we are almost full for the british school holidays, but have very little for May, June / September. I guess that's only to be expected. Am I allowed to ask who you advertise with, those of you who have loads of weeks bookings?? Here's to a good summer everyone! Suzi www.patiras.com
10. Form E111 is for visitors, or people on holiday. If you're going to live in France, you can apply for an E106 to tide you over until you get a job in France & then enter their health care system (I don't know if this is what you plan to do). You can get the form for an E106 by phoning 0191 218 7547 (I've just done it!) & I think they issue them with a fixed lifetime of up to 2 years (not sure what happens then). I don't see how an existing condition would affect the type of health care you're entitled to, here or in France.
11. Sorry, I haven't got any specific information for you.... but most of your questions have already been answered if you trawl back through the archives or use the search function. As for "F1" I seem to remember that the number refers to the number of rooms.... may be wrong though!
12. No you're not mad - or if you are, there's a lot of us around! Not sure what stage you're at but if it's any help we found our property (which will one day hopefully become an established gite business!) on www.french-property.com and also looked on www.latitudes.co.uk and www.frenchways.com. Good luck! suzi
13. Hi again tracy! obviously had no experience yet of this - but there was a thread in about march on this section of the forum called "letting a gite complex" that you might be interested in. They recommend frenchconnections.co.uk. I've used this site to rent a place for a holiday & think its pretty good. They advertise the place but the bookings go directly through the gite owner.
