1. I am not a computer expert, but may I ask if you installed the Orange connection using the CD supplied with the livebox? If so this can cause problems with Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.  I did this once, and had no end of trouble. All my problems went away after I uninstalled Orange and then reconnected to the livebox using the windows connection wizard.  There have been several threads on this forum saying never to put the orange disc anywhere near your computer. For me as a computer illiterate it was easier to uninstall orange, and reconnect using windows, rather than try to mess about with Internet Explorer or Outlook Express. David
2. I think baypond that the op is still trying to record the cd, and that it has not yet reached the car? David
3.

I also wonder how much of this is because of what I perceive as a strong BBC anti Margaret Thatcher bias. David
If this were the case would they have been employing her daughter in the first place?
Have you read the Guardian web site today Norman? David
4. Hoddy, Thanks for your post which is far better expressed than I ever could.  I agree fully, but I also wonder how much of this is because of what I perceive as a strong BBC anti Margaret Thatcher bias. David
5. Susie, Please do not forget that, as well as an English speaking phone line, France Telecom have shops in all towns where you can go to get help or discuss problems face to face.  Many of these shops have someone on the staff who speaks English, and in my experience have always been very helpful.  For me this is an enormous advantage for FT.  After trying a cheaper and apparently better provider with disastrous results, I personally would not consider anyone other than FT. I have had technical problems with FT, but they were sorted out rapidly and professionally, unlike a cheaper organisation which promised the earth until something went wrong, when they did not want to know. A personal opinion only, David In an internet cafe in UK.
6. Thanks Danny, the "ligne seule" seems to be what I was looking for. David
7.
Hi Danny I think I said when I first started asking questions to treat me as doughnut of the day, but, what is the live box for and what exactly are voip calls. Sorry,I did say didnt I. Just had email from my friend and she is with Orange and on her bill is tva reduite and tva normale both at at same price , what ever they are, plus live box, anti virus, anti spam and giga mail.  I have just looked at orange web site and the basic package is on offer @ 19.90 plus 16 euros line rental, that sounds good doesnt it? Susie
Well said Susie, count me as a doughnut as well.  Another question, if you have the livebox package from Orange for internet access, does that mean that this is an Orange only package, or does the line rental for 16 euros include FT line rental?  Do you also have a line rental and call charges for fixed line France Telecom (FT)? I now have an offer from FT for a new offer Optimale 3H for 29 euros per month.  This would give me, on the fixed line, 3 hours calls to fixed lines and mobiles in France and DOM, europe and USA.  "depuis votre ligne fixe vers les fixes et les mobiles de France metropolitaine, des DOM, d'Europe et d'Amerique du Nord". I think this means that I could call mobiles and fixed lines in UK for no extra charge if they are for less than three hours per month. This seems a good deal as I am already paying some 29 euros per month to FT for three hours calls to France only, as I was told that this was the minimum package available to have a fixed line.  This is of course in addition to the Orange internet connection for 32 euros per month with all you describe. This is duplication and I wish there was an inclusive deal for an FT fixed line, plus orange internet, but they seem to act as separate companies. I would be grateful Danny if you could clarify this difference between FT and Orange.  As I said before, I must have an FT fixed line, but I also need Orange internet access. Susie, why pay Orange for antivirus?  Get AVG free!  Same for antispam and giga mail. Unfortunately I will be off line from tomorrow morning for about ten days, so I will respond after that. Thanks, David.
8. Thanks Susie and Danny, I am going to look up my invoices on the internet and see what I can sort out. David
9. Thank you Andy for such a clear and concise answer, which I now understand. David
10. Having arranged to go to UK for an eye test and new specs at Vision express for varifocal tinted lenses, and now preparing to go back because the prescription does not seem quite correct, all at great expense with costs for specs, ferries and hotels, my French neighbours tell me that this can now be done in France! They assure me that the law has recently changed in France, and that now opticians can do all the necessary tests, and only refer you to a specialist with a six month wait if there is a problem with the eyes. They assure me that, for example the optician shop in the LeClerc building in Bressuire (Optique du Bocage, Opticien & Lunetiere, Vision League), can do the full eye test, exactly the same as opticians in UK (the optician says), this costs 30 euros and is not reimbursable.  The optician then sends you to your GP who gives you an ordnance, you take the ordanance to the optician and he prepares the lenses.  After one week the specs are ready.  The optician says that the lenses are fully reimbursable and thus free.  Only charge is the frames and if you use old frames, then no charge for those. The optician apparently has worked in the UK, speaks some English, knows the UK system and says the new French system is the same as the UK.  This seems to be too good to be true, and I wonder if there is a mix up somewhere.  For clarity I am 62 but with 100% CPAM cover due to disability (no top up cover), and my wife is also 62 thus a pensioner, but with top up cover. It seems that if I use my old frames, then within one or two weeks I can get free varifocal tinted lenses, so the total cost of new specs would be 30 euros for the eye tests?  This seems much better than going back to UK. Can this new change be correct? David
11. Thanks for that Susie.  I am trying to figure out my FT phone bill, and I seem to pay about 32 euros a month for line rental plus 3 hours calls in France. I have received another offer from FT by post for what I think is 29 euros per month for line rental plus 3 hours calls to France and Europe fixed lines.  Could this be correct? I also have an Orange internet connecion on top of that  for about 29 euros per month, so I would like to rationalise the bills, and hopefully reduce them. Due to our position at the end of a 5 kilometer long above ground telephone line with many trees on route, we consider it essential to keep a FT fixed line, inclusive calls to Europe would be good, but we also need an internet connection. After an appalling experience with Club Internet which became Neuf, I would not consider a cheap alternative supplier. Will let you know how we do. David
12. Thanks for the links, I now understand much better. However, I am still not sure if the oil is better for you with or without the fats - that is if the oil has separated out, would the oil be healthier if the solidified wax was filtered out?  Or would that affect the cooking quality when used for frying rather than as a salad dressing? David
13. Thanks Norman, I will leave it in a warm place and see what happens. Odile - I do not understand.  I thought olive oil was a pressing of the fruit of the olive tree - where does the fat come from?  Is it like animal fat?  Is fat added to the olive oil?  Surely trees do not have fat? I thought olive oil was healthy!  Would the olive oil be more healthy if I strained the nuggets out of the oil, and use only the oil residue?  Should I do this with all olive oil, i.e. put a bottle in the freezer and then strain it? David
14. We have some Extra Virgin Olive Oil "extraction a froid" which has become too cold in the cave in this freezing weather. The bottles now contain a mixture of what looks like good olive oil, but with many nuggets of what looks like yellowish white lumps of lard.  It seems that these nuggets have solidified out of the olive oil due to the cold weather, and comprise almost 50 percent of the bottle. What are these nuggets?  If they are fat I had no idea that olive oil contained such fat amounts.  Is the olive oil still useable? Thanks, David
15. Susie, Do tell what the packages were, and what the result of your comparison was. Thanks, David
16. Thanks for that, I will give gmail a try. David
17. Thanks for that.  Sorry to be thick, but which of gmail or yahoo would be easier to use, and how do you send and receive (or download) the emails from outlook express 7?  Do you have to set up outlook express and if so how? Thanks, David
18. I was afraid that might be the case.  Being a complete electronic illiterate, how would I go about getting an alternate email address? Thanks, David
19. I do hope you can help me to deliver some New Year greeting e-mails. I use Orange, Windows XP, IE7 and outlook express.  For a few weeks now I have not been able to send e-mails to my relations in UK who have Yahoo e-mail addresses, all e-mails being returned as undelivered mail. Yesterday, I also had e-mails refused by BTInternet, again undelivered mail marked quote [email protected]>: host mx2.bt.mail.yahoo.com[217.146.188.189]     refused to talk to me: 451 VS1-IP5 Excessive unknown recipients - possible     Open Relay http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/spam/spam-18.html (#4.1.8)     80.12.242.47. Unquote. There were no excessive recipients as my son was the only recipient.  I have tried several times, but all are returned. Is this a fault with me, or have Yahoo and BTInternet decided not to accept e-mails from Orange? Is there anything I can do about this? Thanks, David
20.
"According to the the French Impots: Revenus encaissés en monnaie étrangère Si les revenus ou bénéfices en cause ont été encaissés en monnaie étrangère, ils doivent être déclarés pour leur contre-valeur en euros, calculée d'après le cours du change à Paris au jour de l'encaissement (réception en espèces, inscription au crédit d'un compte, etc.) So it's the exchange value on the day of receipt." (Nicked from Mr S Driver)
I am sure that is correct, especially coming from you and the infallible Mr. S Driver.  However, haven't the French tax accepted that this can be very complicated and detailed - in other words too difficult for imbeciles like me and the usual tax paying plebs?  Thus it was my understanding that the highly intelligent French tax mandarins, educated at quality lycees, have decided that this might be too difficult for the peasants, and for simplicity accepted that there can be short cuts in adopting an exchange rate? [6] David Edit - written before parsnips most eloquent reply, and before the suein56 edit, to both of which I defer.
21. That's what I thought too Coops [6]. In any event as the exchange rate is so poor at the moment I was hoping someone would post an official quote from some official document or text book that says you can use the end of year exchange rate, and then I would print this out and attach it to the tax form.  I am sure that somewhere a quote can be found for any rate which suits! [:D] I did this last year and the local tax office accepted it.  If Paris then decide that this is the wrong rate, at least I can show good intent, show that the local tax office accepted it, and avoid any fines for deliberate evasion of tax.  With the loss in revenue due to government incompetence such as miniscule interest rates on savings, and the plunging pound etc., why pay more tax on UK income than is absolutely necessary? I really do not want to "roll over" and accept whatever rate the French tax in Paris decide, which undoubtedly would be the best rate to collect the most tax. David
22. Should we be taking a note of the Pound to Euro exchange rate on the 31st December ready for our French tax forms?  If so, where would we be able to get an official print out to attach to the French tax forms? David
23. Thank you both Will and FerryGuru for your very helpful posts, much appreciated.  It is also good to read that the Dover to Boulogne route may be open again soon. Thanks again, David
24. Thanks for that Will, I am afraid that Britanny Ferries are not too good for us as we go to East London, therefore Calais/Dover would be a good substitute for SpeedFerries which were great for wheelchairs. From your extensive maritime knowledge, rather than personal experience, do you have words of advice about P&O or SeaFrance for wheelchair users?  Also I wonder if Ferryguru might have some hints or tips? Thanks, David
25. Agreed Dick, but in a special section for handicapped or disabled people, on a modern train, perhaps a special toilet could be provided?  In any event, many wheelchair people could manage if they could get the wheelchair next to the toilet door?  I use crutches for such eventualities.  On the tunel trains I understand that that is not presently possible for disabled users.  I could not use the toilet the last time I used the tunnel, but fully able bodied people did have access to toilets.  Surely if the operators consider it necessary to provide toilets for fit people, then they should do so for disabled people?  Or do they expect disabled people to use plastic bottles or bags?  Or are disabled people considered to be merely nuisances who have to be evacuated quickly? Regarding only modern trains having disabled toilets, I do not think that is quite correct.  Many years ago, I am not sure how many but during the late 80's or early 90's, my commuter trains from Cambridge to Liverpool Street were fitted with disabled toilets, and the Stansted Express always had disabled toilets.  That was when the trains were operated by WAGN though, and I am not sure if they are still in service. However, I am not arguing about the tunnel trains, or their legal obligations, it is up to them what services they wish to provide.  I merely say that I prefer not to use them, because of what I consider to be poor facilities, and I want to find out about the cross channel ferries. Thank you for your interest though, you have raised a good point about disabled facilities on the tunnel trains. David
