  1. Thanks Nomoss. I thought of the washing up liquid, but wanted to check the cost of the plasticiser too.
  2. Hello all. Can anyone tell me what the cement/concrete plasticiser we use in the UK is referred to as in French. Thanks in anticipation.
  3. The markets round here sell mirabelles of several shades, yellow through pink to cherry red, so I wouldn’t rule it out because they are not yellow. However, we have small plums on our trees – bluey-purple, 4 cm top to bottom, 3 cm across, obvious “plumy” flesh, but paler and larger than the damsons I’m used to in the UK, and referred to as “prunes” by the locals. Could they be what you have? Good aren’t they!!
  4. You’re doing what can be done, so keep going.  We’ve had similar issues and poison, traps and an electric repeller all added to the cumulative effect – we also befriended a local cat or two who helped while we were at the house – like you we’re not resident fully. With the poison, and I hope this isn’t stating the obvious, but just in case,  place it everywhere you suspect they are - roof, kitchen corners, outbuildings etc and importantly try to make it the only food source, so all food in the kitchen in tin containers ( or at least Tupperware style boxes) no bags or cardboard.  The poison we used is a small red rice grain – can’t remember the brand – but they seemed to love it, it was always gone next day ( which gladdens the heart, on a dark level!!) One final thing, if they are coming in at the junction of walls and floor, as ours were in the kitchen, try tiling up the wall about 10cm if it’s not too unsightly, they get turned off trying to gnaw through ceramic once they penetrated placo. All the best.
  5. If thepages jaune haven't come up with the goods Pat, have you tried the maire, they usually know the local trades.
  6. Bl***in Nora. What a mither. Think I'll get the bus! As it happens the French car I bought was from an English bloke living in Geneva, for 30 years, who left the car at an address in the midlands so that he could use it when he came over to fish - done it for nearly 10 years. As Rabbie said  more honoured in the breach than in the observance.
  7. This is an interesting point, Ano. I’m still UK resident, but keep a French registered car at a house in France and have done for 5 years. Are you saying that I cannot travel back to the UK in it, at all. If so, I didn’t realise that. Can you point me to any websites that clarify this. Forgive the lack of intonation in the text, I'm curious not doubtful!!
  8. I’m with Thiere on the gun thing. I’ve tried a couple bought from the UK and used here, and they are more trouble than they are worth ( although the Pointmaster was the better of the two).  Firstly, the mix has to be perfectly fluid and “grit free” to get a continuous flow out of them, and secondly unless the mix bonds immediately on application to the wetted cavity, there’s regular drop out – although you can re-liven it as T says, it’s a pain.  I used the” gloved technique” mentioned by halfblind in the end, in all but the deepest cavities  - where I used the pointmaster or trowel and finished with a glove – it’s effective, with least drop out and certainly quickest. Mix-wise, I went with the instructions on the Chaux bag – about 5-1 I think for joints.  And at risk of stating the Bl***ing obvious, once you pick a sand supply and mix ratio stick with it religiously or you’ll get a patchwork.
  9. Yes they do. Friend of mine managed a big midlands reservoir and fishery, they strung barley straw in each year, but just the straw, in large " onion nets"
  10. That’s not out of the question big mac, although I’m planning new jobs for it already – tree lopping, roof tiling – should have bought one years ago.
  11. Thanks again Sid. I’ll try all that. Sorry it’s been a few days, had to wait for curserJ
  12. Thanks Sid, With CCleaner, do I just  run it from the download or is it best to save it and alter such things as cookie control before running it? Do you know how I could check if my Av s/w is slowing me down? Thanks Y
  13. Hey Salty, had long chat with them last night, and bought a 7.4 mtr tower and delivery to France to coincide with me being there - saved me hundreds on transport, and I've got brand new tower with instructions and guarantees etc. So thanks again.
  14. Does everyone have to wait an age before the curser appears in the scrip box prior to typing, or is it me!!  Or use the direction keys rather than the mouse to drag the curser through the text to make corrections? I’ve started to open Word to do the typing, but still have to wait ages for the curser to appear in the script box before I can paste. Is it just a line speed thing. None of the other Forums I use seem to have the problem, but they are probably using servers over here in the UK. Are the LF ones in France? Just wondered!
  15. Unbelievable!! You could try something like this, although I don't know which stores to try in France. http://www.screwfix.com/p/a2-stainless-steel-security-shear-nuts-m5-x-10mm-pack-of-10/54786?_requestid=1861382 Or round off one or two of the bolt heads after tightening.
  16. Thanks Salty. I'd seen them on ebay but will revisit now. Appreciated.
  17. You could try Carol Nash. European cover is unlimited, Euro breakdown for France is included, and multi vehicle deals if that helps.
  18. Thanks all, will check out the suggestions. Don’t suppose you’re selling it are you W? Just joking, but I hadn’t thought of the builders merchants notices.
  19. Raises questions, other than just the religious/ethical ones. For instance, why did he stay in hospital if he was refusing the procedure?  The article is clear that he was making the decision with full mental capacity, whether you agree with the religious aspect is a different issue, but why not just send him home if nothing could be done. It was his cognisant choice. It appears on the face of it that he was denying someone a bed for 3 weeks. I would be more animated if a parent had brought in a young child in a similar condition, but on this occasion it seems free will was exercised and respected. What would have happened if he had arrived at hospital unconscious, with no one to inform the doctors of his religious constraints. Just curious
  20. Oops, sorry if I contravened regs in posting. I did look for a for sale section on the forum, but couldn't find one. Will I automatically be prompted on  a pm or do I need to change a setting? I thought about the neighbour thing, Cooperlola, but there is no one it fits with.  Plan was to buy, use over a long period - it could be into next summer before I finish, we're still UK based and it's a grande boulot! - then sell on.
  21. hello all. I'm in the throes of re pointing the stonework around the house here in Yonne (89) and am getting beyond ladder safety levels! I've decided a scaffolding tower is on the cards. Am watching ebay, but wondered if any fellow renovators had one they need to sell. Ideally I'm after a boss youngman model, because mates can get hold of spare boards and supports, and I'll need around a 6 metre working platform. I've tried leboncoin, and am also watching Ebay Fr, no joy there so far - but what is on there is expensive as you may guess in comparison to UK. Any other suggestions gratefully received Thanks for any help
  22. Thanks Théiere , didn’t realise the disadvantages.
  23. I'm about to embark on a major repointing excercise. Can anyone recommend a supplier of chaux, particularly Renocal, in the Northern Yonne / Southern Champ' Ardenne area - South of Troyes, north of Tonnerre. Bag or bulk would be considered. We have the usual Brico sheds within driving range, and a Gomat in Tonnerre, just wondered if I was missing a trick. And of course, any pointing tips, gratefully received. Thanks.
