  1. Hi We purchased our First house in France this February 2011. Previously we rented. I have not received a bill for either Tax. How do they know I am the new owner. The notaire said the bill will go to the previous owner, how does she get it, does it not come to the 'Owner' at the address? So how do I get into the system and how do I start paying. Will the bill be for this year or 2012 if\when I get it. I was told by the agent when we purchased, dont worry they will get in touch.
  2. We arrived 3 years ago with one son starting in CM2, the last year in Primary School and one son in CM1. The CM2 son only just got in as his DOB is Jan, otherwise it would have been 6 eme-1st year at College. We knew we were hopefuly just in time with them both learning French written and verbal before comencing College. They have both found it difficult with no extra help offered to them. They both redoubled the 1st year which was the best, so when comencing college, they could be fairly fluent written and speaking. I would not have come over with them starting at College, they are both now very compentant 3 years on, but it has been VERY VERY hard. Hours of homework and revising lessons each day to be sure they have understood everything. My eldest is now at the same level as other French children in his class, my youngest started college this week, and it's going to be a toungh year for him. Would I do it all again if I had known? Not sure, I just know that it has been hard and for a child to start at college, will be very difficult and I would not recomend it. Now my kids love life here and speak French and German, but it was bringing a 10 and 12 year where also the schooling is very different. I thought at least Maths would be the same, but it isn't. If you serioulsy want to come over, I would seriously look at internatioal school. Don not let her start in College. She will feel isolated and alone.
  3. Can anyone tell me how you qualify for rentree money for all the kids bit's. I have finally been accepted by CAF and had money backdated for the last year, but do you have to register for the rentree allowance, does it automatically get paid if you have kids at school\when will it get paid\what is the allowance and I assume it is based on earnings. Thanks in advance
  4. We have just come out of rented accommodation for 2.5years. The agent said out odd marks on walls were wear and tear, howerer my Son did spill black Airfix paint on the wallpaper, so we found a paint the same peach colour and just painted the one wall The wheel of our office chair badly scratched the floor and removed quite a bit of the top surface of a laminate floor, so we replaced it, bought the cheapest poss. I think all in all, cost us 80E, which was far cheaper than if it was taken from our deposit as we would have also had to pay labour for someone to come in and do it.
  5. His mother said Baptisim, but that may be her english translation. He is going to Llords (SP) with his Catholic school the week before so perhaps confirmed??
  6. I have just been asked to be a Godmother to a French friends son, which I have to say, I have been very touched by and feel we have now been more than 'just' accepted by our french friends. Does anyone know what is traditional to give as a gift to your godson. In the Uk I have previoulsy bought my godchildren a Childrens Bible or a St Christopher or a Braclet for the girls, but is this is what is also done in France. Are these acceptiable gifts, do you give money..... My godson will be 14 soon, so a Childrens Bible might not be the right thing. Any guidance in the right direction and what is acceptiable please as I dont want to ask them incase of embarasing them.
  7. We have had them twice in our chimney, but thankfully noticed them within we think 24/48 hours of them arriving. (heard buzzing but could not work out where was coming from) We lit a fire and within 20 mins they all swarmed off.
  8. Hi Two Questions please 1. We have just purchased a house where all the tree's are covered in Ivy particulary the Fruit Trees, I have spent days/weeks pulling cutting and sawing it off as the stems were so think like Tree trunks. I have tried two different products, which have not worked. The latter being very smelly, Cloudy white and states will kill Nettles, Ivy and Brambles. I need to kill the ivy that is laying all over the ground and already starting to climb up the first trees again I took it off 1 month ago. I know it absorbs the product through the leaves, so have waited for the leaves to grow again, but no such luck. 2nd - There are alot of roses, particulary climbing/rambling which are like a hedge all around the perimiter of the garden. I noticed today I have some green Fly which I can kill off, but one section, all the buds are covered in, what I can only describe as white down\cotton wool and also on the stems. Is this mildew or another disease. What do I kill first, the disease whatever it is or the green fly?
  9. We bought our first ride on mower and the Shop told me to get the insurance as it is not covered by the House Insurance. Pacifica via Credit Agricole offered 3 levels of Insurance 1st - Public Liability only - ie if you have a friend park their car and you drive into it or scratch it, it will be covered or of course do not see someone come upbehind you and knock them over. 2nd - as above plus a few extras and repacement if it is stolen 3rd - all above and if I drive it into a tree and is written off, they will repair\repalce. I went for option 3 and costs me 8E each month. Well worth it when my mower cost 3,000E
  10. I have a Labrador which used to jump the gate if a tractor/lorry or motor bike goes past. Had to take drastic measures and as I was in a rental property at the time with a sliding gate, I could not dig the perimiter fence electric system with the collar in the ground. Reluctantly I bought a electric remote control dog collar off of e bay, and I will post you the link. What is good about this one, is it had a bleep , vibration and static mode which can all be set to different strengths 1 - 10. I only put the static on No 2 and only had to do it twice, it stopped the jumping straight away. The thing I did, was put the collar on for 24 hours before I used it and when he looked like he was going to jump or did go over the gate, I zapped him. He did not see me do it and thought it was the gate. Now I only put it on if we go out for a walk as I dont want him to chase a motor bike and get killed, but have only had to use the bleep or vibrate, NEVER the static. I think the key, is for him to think it is the gate and not you at the first start. I now have a dog who returns to me when I call him,and is obedient and love his walks off a lead and I know he will return when called.
  11. To give you all an update, we are now the proud owners of a Husqvarna 183T which has a 107 cutting size and 18.5 engine. We went to our local shop in the end after scanning all the pubs and internet. Told the man what we had garden size etc, and he pointed us to the one we have bought. Did a deal and knocked off 80E and also for 1E we could also have the trolley/jack thing to lift it up on it's side to be able to service it and it was delivered that same evening FOC. All servicing and warranty is done at our house and anything more serious taken to their workshop. I wont have to deal with Husqvanna direct and all is covered for 2 years. Thanks everyone for all your valuable advice, very much appreciated.
  12. Hi, We are going to look at purchasing our First sit on lawnmower this weekend, and I am very confused. We have 2 acres of land with lots of trees all laid to lawn so all will need cutting. I know I should buy the best I can afford-Have a budget of 3,000E max. Obvioulsy biggest cutting size, engine size etc, but does Mulching blade really work? Someone said if they bought again, would get one with a blade at the Front ie a Park type like you saw the council use in the Uk. Had all the pubs through today, and so many too choose from. Is the engine type the best ie Briggs and Stratton or Honda?. Brico E.Leclerc have MTD with 3 year at home warranty...Any good?? Thanks in advance
  13. My 1 year old Labrador has been diagnosed with Diabetes Insipidus - Basically water Diabetes. To summerise the symptons, drinks loads of water and then a few mins later wants a pee and then the cycle starts all over again. He has also lost 5KG in 4 weeks. Vet done various blood tests, urine and ultra sound on his belly. Then completed urine tests every 2 hours over course of the day and urine results all came back the same. Not sure of the test, but urine should read 1.20 and his was between 1.04 and 1.10. He was prescribed a human drug which I had to take to the pharmacy. Drug in 'DESMOPRESSIN' - Brand name 'Minirin'. after 1 week of the drops, peeing stopped and so did water comsumption and weight stayed the same from the week before. Went to the pharmacy to order the tablets which he will be on for the rest of his life and burst into tears. Will cost 270 euro a month. Dosage been given 0.2mg x 3 tablets twice a day. Obvioulsy can't afford this and went back to vet and he has said this is the only drug. I have searched and searched the internet in the UK, France, USA etc to see if I can get cheaper. I have now managed to buy 100 minirin melt tablets for 150E and I am only giving 1 tablet twice a day at the cost of 90E a month to see if this will work. Which when you have two children, is a big chunk of money which I am finding it hard to justify. I know you have these decission to make when you have animals. My question to any vet or Doctor, is there another drug I can try? is this the only option etc..... Could his condition deteiorate or even the ADH hormone kick back into working again. Will he get other complication from this...is this only the start.? Any help would be appreciated. I dont want to have to make that awful decission when cost decides if he lives or not.
  14. Fantastic.....Granite work tops are much more important!!!
  15. Jazzer, surprised that you are using Nat west. I have a nat west a\c in Uk and when I approached them for moving money over in a large sum and monthly, they always offered me at least 2 cents below Moneycorp. This month I also moved the sale of our house money over £200,000 and they could only offer 1.06 where as Money corp/HI FX were 1.12. Even on small amounts Moneycorp\hifx come out better and dont charge £23 for the pleasure either. Just a friendly bit of advice.
  16. I saw this on 'Anglo Info - Dordogne' in the 'give away section' this evening Seeking perfect new home for two standard poodles melinda posted on 06/09/2010 at 12:24 Subject: 2 gorgeous standard poodles need a new home I'm sadly looking for the perfect new home for my two, 4 year old standard poodles. They are UK Kennel Club registered litter sisters who are great big softies, love children but chase cats. They need a new, loving owner who is prepared to take them both on and can walk them regularly or has plenty of fenced in space. You can see them here www.makesoap.biz/poodles.htm They are fully innoculated and microchipped but I would prefer them to stay in the region. I'm on the borders of the Dordogne and Lot et Garonne. Their microchip numbers are 985140000507791 and 985140000456109

  18. I Buy the boeuf bourginon (SP?), but it needs at least 3 hours in a low oven. Unless you are going to waste an expensive cut of meat to stew, it will take a long time to tenderise.
  19. I have the pickled onion fingers and I forgot to take off my watch, so all the picked onion water\juice has gone in all the sections in the strap.....still wafts past now and again when I get hot...Ughhhhh
  20. We have exactly the same problem. We need to move money over in the next three months, but still need to complete in the Uk, which should be the end next week. I spoke with Moneycorp as we based the purchase of our house here in France on 1,20 which they told me a month ago. They have now stated that the Euro is dropping as the economic market in USA is not great so brokers etc have stopped buying Dollars and are now buying Euro's making the euro strong. Who knows if this is true, but it seems plausable. You can forward buy Euros as long as you can put 10% up front, which at the Mo, we can't do until we complete in the UK. Fingers crossed, it wont drop much more, but who knows.
  21. It Doesnt even have toilets in the arrival or departures terminals...you have to walk back up to the main terminal, which I have to say, when dropping my sister off who is is a wheelchair, is hard enough to go from one building to another and with a case as well.....thats how basic it is.
  22. Rowan, Christine, is it worth one of you giving 'Tanya' a call, from the post on Monday 'offering a home'. Rowan, I think you replied to the post. She may travel to collect? It has her telephone number in the post
  23. Have rang Tanya and gave her details of this forum 'Animal Rescue', Sue at Poorpaws and Christines web address.
  24. thought you may like to know, Stig has kindly been taken in by Sue at www.poorpaws.com and is on her webb site awaiting adoption. If anyone would like to adopt Stig or any other dog on her site, please get in touch with her. Sue along with Merlin, Christine and Rowan do amazing work in trying to rehome and rescue these dogs.
