1. I have done this, back in 2003, when I sold a house to friends of mine, and did this to save exchange costs. Some Notaires will do this but some will not due to the fact they might think you are paying some under the table so to speak, to save fees. Anyway, we both signed CdeV and the Act de V was done by proxy. The money in Sterling was paid to me by cheque, but in the paperwork this figure was translated into the euro amount, and fees paid on this. It was not a huge amount though and I would make sure I had the money banked before the AdeV was completed.

Dog on the ferry

I asked this question on another forum, and recieved differing replies, so I take it you have just read the bottom of your ticket from Brittany Ferries as I did. Some people have been asked to use one, some had not, so I decided to buy one just in case. My Lab is totally harmless so I am reluctant to muzzel him as well, so on my last trip in May, I went to the check in desk with the paperwork, then when handed the scanner I got the dog brought in, scanned then dog straight back out to the car. This was at Caen so the doors are very close to the desks. But, on the way over at Portsmouth, I had a problem finding the chip (it moves about) and went to the booth to say I could not travel when another check in guy (bit stroppy) came out to try and asked if I had a muzzel and he had one if I wanted. Anyway he couldnt wait so with dog wagging tail he just found the chip straight away sans muzzel. So, if they are enforcing this rule I do not know, but it may pay to take one just in case, but as BF so not own the port and anyone can walk in with a dog I do not know how they will enforce this other than by refusing travel, but I always scan the dog anyway and they never venture out from behind the desk. Also, the check in is much quicker now as they do it on the PC and do not have to fill the form out by hand then photocopy it as previously.
3. Back on the Elu story for Chancer, not sure when Elu was bought out, but DW was a known brand in the US for pull over saws and Elu well known in Europe. Years ago, when I worked for a company who supplied electromagnetic brakes for the Chop saws, we had to make 2 variants, one 240V for Elu branded and 110V for the DW. DW was used for the US market for high end market and Elu for Europe. Then it was decided to just go with the DW brand and Elu was no more. I think some of the early drills were designed in the UK, but now all US. Another aside but if you look on the Stanley tools website another takeover is in the offing.
4. I have used First Rate FX for 4 years now and found them very reliable. I have also paid by debit card with them and also direct bank transfer, again no problems.
5. I was in a similar position to you many years ago and consolodated my c.cards and loans in to one loan, over a longer period of time, which means lower monthly repayments. I know this method is more expensive than a mortgage, but may be simpler to arrange if your credit rating is still good. Also, can you switch your cards to interest free period ones (moneysupermarket as mentioned is good for comparing these). Capital one and A&Liecester used to be good ones for this. Whatever you do, you must cut up all your credit cards after you have consolidated the debt, otherwise you just start using them again and are back to square one Good luck
6. I have used RA twice to Brittany previously but it was inconvenient (flight from NCL to Stanstead then to France) due to the flight timings on the return, needing an overnight hotel near the airport, so not that cheap for me. The thing that would now stop me from using them, is the online check-in. I have no interent access at home due to the fact we are on a 'low user scheme' and "shock horror", I do not have a laptop, so no wifi for me at the moment. In my part of Brittany, there was an internt cafe an hour away but has since closed so I do not know how I would check in. But, saying that, the service was on time and I had no complaints. Been delayed many times from Prague on EasyJet too.
7. I use Britline, for about 10 years now, and the charges are very minimal(I do not have a card though just a cheque book). To pay in, I either use Bank transfer (£20 at Barclays) or an FX company for large amounts (free). Other than that I either send them travelers cheques with an RIB or call in at my local CA branch in Brittany with euros, RIB and passport (no charge either). Never had a problem with them at all.
8. Last time I was over I had to buy a 14mm combination spanner to fit the new chainsaw chain I had just aquired for 30 euros(£17 in UK). 8 euros for an own make Mr Brico one. Regarding powertools in a previous reply, I am glad that the french hold B&D in high regard because that keeps me in a job :-) , but the prices are very expensive in France. The Dewalt tools are very good though I have never seen them in the Brico's. Typically a B&D tool has a development time of 9months where the Dewalt one typically 2 to 3 years and that's what you pay for. Also all the B&D tools are made in China, Dewalt manufacture in Europe (sadly not the UK now). Bosch are excellent and always have been.
9. Sue56, Super U in Ploermel 56 are selling the McVities choc digestives on the normal shelves too.
10. Thanks Judie for your explanation. A last question, what do you mean by owning the boundaries as denoted by the 'x's. I dont own 53, thats another neighbour veg patch. Also sorry John M for hijacking your thread.
11. Hi again, bit late in replying as I don't log in every day. 52 is my piece of land and next door owns 49. If you notice the hashed lines run across both parcels. I am not in dispute or anything, just inquisitive as my neighbour has expressed an interest in buying the parcel below 52, which is just a long field, his is a veg garden. He saws he wants to extend his garden, but he is his seveties and just plants lots of leeks in his bit, and I think he may have other motives but that may be just me being cynical. Also are the 'X' marked bourne points or something else. Thanks Ian
12. This is what it looks like.
13. Some are like this---- but others are _ _ _ _  across the parcel of land, but this is the middle of the field and is adjoined to the neighbours garden, but do not continue onto their land so cannot be a right of way I think. Thanks for your reply
14. On the plan Cadastral  via the link given, what does the hashed lines mean, i.e. are they access places for example. These are shown on my bits of land and also 'x' are shown. Any ideas?
