  1. Yes, I like to handle a book first to see if it fits. The Marabout one was a gift, the photography is very nice; porn for foodies and it's all matt coated so feels nice to hold. I haven't made any of the recipes though. That's a nice blog, Clair. I dip into another of your recommendations, Chocolate & Zucchini, from time to time. The only French vegetarian recipe book I have is the 'Marabout chef recettes végétariennes'. Very nice, but it's a translation of 'Vegie Food' originally published in Australia.

  5. Thanks for that link Clair. It's really useful.  I knew about a few of the soft cheeses but seeing that French Emmental Entremont and all Milleret cheeses use non-animal rennet makes me want to whoop with joy! The translations présure chimique and présure végétale are a good start. It should be easy to grow some ladies' bedstraw, which if it is traditional in Chester must have been used for Cheshire cheese. And there is certainly no shortage of fig sap around here so that is an easy one to test. We're having sag paneer on Sunday. [:)]
  6. Do you put rennet in cottage cheese, Clair? ... and do you know where I might find vegetable-based rennet? (or even a suggestion of where to look for it!)
  7. My partner uses OmniPage to convert scans to text documents. It is not terribly accurate and depends on getting the text absolutely straight in the scan (very fiddly with things like magazines) and also on the font used; some are more accurately read than others.  He has an older (full) version, so uses Jaws for voice-out.  Interesting to note that those two processes have been wrapped up into one package now. Thanks R&J. If you were to put this converted text into a translation programme I'm not convinced that you would get much sense of the original. OH has only used it with English text, so I can't comment on the accuracy of the character recognition for French. As Coops says you are looking for OCR software. Just don't expect too much of it. My advice is to learn to touch type, if you can see the original text clearly enough, because it's faster and more accurate.  However, I know that might not be an option for you, Hakunamatata. ...but maybe in the near future with reading specs?  I hope so. Another thought: It might be worth ringing RNIB to ask them which OCR they recommend for French characters, and what they would charge since there are grants/subsidies if you have low vision.  They are amazingly helpful.   14. I don't about the science. I would guess that it works in the same way as the sheets of matting made to suppress weeds; rain goes through but light doesn't. Spread wood ash in a thick layer to make a path. Brush and/or water it gently to pack it down between paving stones.  Keep adding as and when it's available. It disappears over time, but it's free and it has to be put somewhere.

  19. Hi Coops, Would it depend on the car being driven?  I thought I read, somewhere on this forum, that a UK resident may not drive a foreign registered car in the UK. Jetlag may be a French resident, but their UK driving licence will, most likely, have an out-of-date UK address on it.
