  1. Regarding my earlier posting have since found a very interesting site which gives in detail the cause of our bites The actual site is called CHIGGERS by Nina Bicknese, this is the American term for the minute Red spider mite,it describes perfectly the incidence from start to finish of its life cycle and its active period and what can be done to overcome it. I reckon after reading this the mosquito is a walk in the park. I do hope this is of assistance All the best DJ
  2. We have experienced the mosquito bites and believe the majority came from a still water source ie stored water for the garden. our problem is regarding bites which appear after extensive clearing of old garden refuse ie,stones old dead grass, and general garden muck all of which were very dry,has any one experienced this and can tell us what are causing the bites and if they know of any preventive treatment we cannot see the insect concerned ,it is getting a real pain maybe we will have to covewr ourselves head to foot ,any advices would be very helpfull all the best DJ
  3. Some very interesting points raised regarding F A . My experiences involved a company called Barlow Clowes, This company was registered with the F.S.A and yet still conned people out of their money When we were interviewed by the serious fraud squad they stated the man in question should have been charged with murder as some of his clients were totally ruined and took their lives as a result, a very sad situation when one considers the body that controls these financial institutions are the same that all registered F.A are guided by. A further point the concept of investing in a british building sciety was attractive in that it was in its off shore fund thus interest was paid gross and the due tax paid in the country of residence. does that make it clearer Les All the best DJ
  4. Thankyou  for your advices, I have no problem with the declaration of interest for my French tax assesment .We will probably go to the Nation wide ,we have allways been satisfied with their services. I would no more go to a financial advisor than fly to the moon on a dust bin. All the best DJ
  5. Hi Diana Have just installed a Hunter Herald To run 8 rads off. The fire stays in all night ,works well ,very responsive to controls, have no problem with fuel falling out when doors are open,we have a dual fuel but as earlier forum member stated seems pretty pointless.coal is of limited supply in France, one really important point worth mentioning due to the internal boiler the radiated heat is pretty low ok if you open the doors ,have no problems with peeling paint. Hope this hasnt confused the issue All the best  DJ
  6. Hi There We are retireing to France April 2nd,Has any one experience of any beneficial saving schemes which allow tax free returns paid monthley,Similar to the Northern Rock Silver Scheme running in the UK.This offers a return of 5.10% Gross. A further point,is the top up scheme or the mutual health scheme premiums allowable against your personal tax charge. Thanks in advance DJ

  8. Hi Jon & sue Have just installed a wood burner with back boiler,it is of low pressure design ie it has a primary pumped supply to 8 rads and a secondary supply to two slave rads, I have used soldered type connections and in certain areas plastic as per John Guest fittings. The French system is  pressurised and if installed i would use brazing. Ime not saying my way is correct but have taken quite a few advices on the matter and am happy with the results. Hope this is of assistance DJ
  9. Hi Smiffy Will give you my experiences regarding wood treatment, The first property we put an offer on was riddled with termite, the Dordogne region has a serious problem re termites, when you see the damage they cause you will definatley require to protect your beams from attack,if as in our case they were allready established i would walk away. Capricorn beetle is not as seriouse but can still create seriouse damage, beams should be treated. We sprayed ours with Xylphene, the cause of most infestation is dampnes and no air move ment so make sure re your roof etc is sound and ventilate the areas of concern. If you do your own spraying make sure you use all the correct protection a full face mask is a must they can be obtained from Srewfix for around £78 make sure you get the correct filter. When treated the area must be left for about a week, due to fumes etc. Hope this is of help, All the best DJ
  10. Hi Peter. Steves reply is spot on,one of our French neighbours told us to use Xlyphene as this protects against the dreaded termites and all the other nasties. Most important use the correct masks clothing etc, airborne droplets can be ingested via skin and lungs ,Good luck with the work it is nasty. All the best DJ
  11. EVIANERS.I would be very interested to know the costings regarding the Speedferries deals ,if they are the Ryanair of the sea ,there must be some really good savings to be made.Regards DJ
  12. Hi Sasha Just thought i would mention the actual building of the stairs. I recentley installed our stairs useing ash which was rough cut straight from the sawmill. My friend a really first class chippie had to work out the risers!and the Goings to allow the correct fit for the particular hight of the stairs a very involved business and i have great respect for those chippies out there who carry out this sort of work,so make sure you get a good tradesman otherwise you may still end up with a bungalow. All the best DJ

  14. Hi Annabell. The following may be of interest,Am in the process of insuring a Peugeot Partner HDI this is classed as a 6cv group car,it would appear if it were a 8cv group it would be cheaper to insure, As reccomended in an ealier string we requested a quote from Sellier on 05 45 82 03 20 They break the quote down to various additions at extra cost, example Full comp cover E402 Road side assist E27 replacement Vehicle E37 and various other options, our vehicle was quoted at 451.98 euroes . All the rellevant detail can be forewarded by Fax and a quote will be Faxed back. To get the cover if required you must supply the following. The fax duly signed on every page,A copy of the vehicles registration document(carte grise) a copy of the named drivers driving licences,Proof of your No Claim Bonus and yor payment. At present rates the cost in sterling is 305.00 not bad as it includes breakdown cover and full european insurance cover. I do hope this helps DJ
