1. I have AVG on one and Avast! on the other. No real problems with either but of the two I prefer Avast, it is less intrusive.
2. do you use your pc for other applications apart from internet, eg photoshop, if so does it ever lock up then as well? just wondering if it might be getting low on memory
3. Hi to all the mobile surfers in the south east, I am thinking of working on a campsite in Argeles sur Mer over the summer and was wondering about getting a dongle from sfr so I could have mobile internet. Does anyone happen to know if this would work here? On sfr's map it looks as if they have 3G coverage in this area but can anyone with local knowledge confirm? Thanks
4. Thanks bubbles I never did know my right from my left, I will re-post this in the Bottom Right subforum.
5. Hi - I hope I'm in the right forum here! - I am thinking of working on a campsite in Argeles sur Mer over the summer and was wondering about getting a dongle from sfr so I could have mobile internet. Does anyone know if this would work here? On sfr's map it looks as if they have 3G coverage in this area but can anyone with local knowledge confirm? Thanks
6. Thanks DerekJ. Just realised how stupid my post reads - if you removed Exploder first you wouldn't be able to download anything at all would you, doh! but what I meant was you can have several browsers installed on your machine and choose which to set as default/use for particular tasks.
7. Hi, if you haven't tried a different browser yet I really would try that, it worked for me, Internet Explorer is more prone to bugs than and if there is a bug in Explorer, using a different search engine won't make any difference but using a different browser will. A lot of people use Mozilla Firefox, I like Opera, but Google Chrome is very fast and light and intuitive. You don't need to remove Explorer first and you can download any of them for free, Chrome is at http://www.google.com/chrome/index.html?hl=en&brand=CHMA&utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-row-bk&utm_medium=ha Good luck (I don't think this link is going to work, admin help please?)
8. I came back with a little eee pc netbook, and like ErnieY says it's great to have something so light and easily portable, I can carry it in my handbag! I'm getting used to the very small screen size (just downloaded a little gizmo that lets you turn it sideways and view screens portrait instead of landscape, good fun). £155 with Windows XP from Carphone Warehouse, had it all of 2 weeks and very happy with it so far.
9. Are you using IE, if so try a different browser? (eg. Opera, Firefox, Google Chrome)
10. an easy way might be to say something like 'la livraison/le rendez-vous etc est prevu pour demain mais voila que je me trouve dans le quartier aujourd'hui, alors je suis venu(e) vous demander si par hazard la piece est deja arrivee/vous pourriez me donner rendez-vous cet apres-midi ....' (excuse lack of accents, feeling so rotten today with cette putain de bronchite, that really can't be bothered with them)
11. yes I think at the moment that's about it. Many years ago I had a visit from the TV detector people in the UK, they had a look round and found no TV, cos I didn't have one nor a licence, then a few weeks later they sent me a letter saying they would not be prosecuting me on this occasion as they had checked their records and discovered I did in fact have a valid colour TV licence in force ... doh? Let's hope the French make more sense! Getting the visit was quite scary though, it was one of those situations where even though you know you are in the clear, you somehow get made to feel they know different and you're going to get done.
13.
conduite a droite - driving on the right (of the road).
I always thought 'driving on the right' was 'circulation a droite' and as Clair says conduite a droite=RHD conduite a gauche=LHD
14.
As an aside, SD, do you know why the UK logbook system is evidence of keeper not a formal document of title ?.
Company cars I guess? registered to user not head office
15. Had spent one or two months every year travelling round France in my motorhome over a period of about 10 years. Not consciously looking at houses at first, just having a great holiday. Got to know different regions so when I was ready to move, had a pretty good idea where to start looking. Ended up buying a house in a place I had visited many years previously - recently I looked back in my holiday diary for that year and found I had written 'cute little town, big town square, pretty houses, worth re-visiting.'
16. CA you can get them out of cash machines, there's an option on the menu for printing a RIB
17.
As another "rear end covering" excercise, I have found P&O are offering a frequent traveler deal 9 crossings pre booked for £27 per crossing.
Do you happen to know what the surcharges/restrictions are on these please? it doesn't give much detail on the website
18. There's all sorts of things in this post that I would have a problem with. However, money from a relative seems to be the least of them. Simple answer surely is for the OP to have a second card on mum's account, and withdraw cash from a hole in the wall in euros, in discreet amounts. It needn't touch your French bank account.
19. Thanks for pointing that out, it hadn't occurred to me there would be any chance of getting anything back. Would it matter if the voucher was purchased quite a long time back? I've never claimed anything back from a credit card, is it straightforward? But hey, they haven't offically gone under yet have they?
20. The way I see it, what has happened is that the INVESTMENT property market has ground to a halt. People who are looking for a new home will still go ahead buy a house. It's the people who have been buying and selling property as a commodity, to make money, who are having to retrench. So areas where that happens a lot, e.g. Dordogneshire, will feel the effects first. Same as other commodities like grain and oil - and the shame of it is that commodity trading makes it hard for people who just want to get on with their lives in the real world, like farmers who want grain to feed their animals on, and it's the same with property.
21. Happy surfing, Jacqui Too! Should perhaps mention one other thing tho' - at some wifi hotspots you find you can't connect unless your firewall is off, sometimes this happens first time you use a particular hotspot and after that it is ok. If you do have to disable it, don't forget to enable it again once you are connected, especially if you are going to be checking your bank account or something.
22. You shouldn't need anything else, just a wi-fi laptop (and a browser), and if you are lucky it will just connect itself when you switch it on. But sometimes you have have to ask at the counter for the password or key to type in. I think they all offer free wifi, it is McDo's national policy. It does work, I have used it (so it can't be hard!). Sometimes you can get connected in the car park sitting in your car.
23. Was offered personal liability ins along with house ins. Not that I am expecting to be sued for smashing someone else's best china but it covers things like if I got into a dispute over unsatisfactory good or services, you get legal advice and support. Anyway it was quite cheap and seemed a good idea especially since I was having work done on the house. So I took it.
24. I thought brothel creepers were the ones with really thick crepe soles. Usually suede I agree.
25. Usually use Firefox/Opera but recently downloaded the new Chrome to give it a whirl. Tried it for internet banking and my site said I should 'update to a browser such as IE or MF/f' !!!
