1. I kow they are the most important thing on the page the the huge multy coloured box adverts to the right of the text. But I found the images on the edge of my vision while trying to read Dave's text an irritating distraction.I could do without ...
2.
Is the Greek debacle  another reason for Brits to vote for the exit. Borrow money, don't pay it back; blame everybody else; take no responsibility for the actions of your own population. If the Greeks get away with this, there is an election coming up in Spain that could be interesting? Quillan accusing someone else of being abusive when proved wrong, sounds a bit ironic? Poor old "ebaynut" will probably go the way of a few other ex members of this forum.
I cant see the Greeks being permitted to get away with a debt reduction or other bailed out countries will want some of the same as they will look at it as Greece being rewarded for standing up against the Northern Eurozone debt holding countries mainly Germany and France . They might be able to afford taking a hit from Greece not paying back her loans and carry the loss... But not if the others were demanding they be treated the same and have their debts written off as well . I dont think anybody knows what the end result of all this will be at the moment as people who should have some idea seem to have boxed themselves into corners . .
3.
I'm not sure that the 'free movement' that you refer to has much to do with the Calais situation. If the migrants at Calais were allowed 'free movement' they wouldn't need to jump on the back of a Lorry as they could just walk on a boat legally. Free movement simply applies to the right of any EU citizen to live and work in any other EU country. It is why I can live in France without the need of a residence permit. It doesn't prevent the UK for enforcing border controls, something I am acutely aware of every time I fly back and have to queue up at passport control before I can enter.
I am, aware of what Brussels means by Free Movement Its a pity they dont extend the defination to preventing Unions permiting their members to stop people from physically excercising it when trying to go about their business or trying get home . .
4. I read today that the cost of the destruction of fruit and vegetables as a result of actions by French strikers and the immigrant problem in Calais is in the region of 10 million pounds worth so far this year. Maybe we should deduct that amount from the next lump of money we have to pay the EU . Money drying up every time there is action to stop " Free Movement " that Brussels claims is so important to them may result in the French being leaned on to make sure "Free Movement " to drive where you want always takes place as a " Human Right " someting else that they claim to hold so dear ......but holding my breath they will act ...I am not !
5.
Thibault, I heard that on the U.K. side toilets had been provided, water distributed and even some light meals. We all have to feel really sorry for anyone caught up in this mess.[:(]
And all goes to show that on the North side of the channel is where the nice people live who will help others in difficulty. And on the South sde of the channel is where the NOT nice people live who will turn their backs on them .
6. They will get the message when people die .... If and when a Eurostar service ploughs into them at 200mph if they continue with tresspassing onto the track its got to happen ... Then of course it will be the drivers fault for not stopping on a sixpence when he saw them ..
7. Derek J wrote : It seems the French authorities have no guts to tackle this strike action and are happy to have massive disruption both sides of the channel. Norway. Denmark Germany Netherlands Belgium Ireland . All countries that provide reliable ferry crossings to England that are free from employing union dominated idiots that just want to cause the most damage they can Given the current situation the French should be asking themselves why this should be and hanging their heads in shame but they wont be they are a nation of talkers who wont do anything ....Unless their German masters tell them to perhaps the UK should appeal to Angela to tell Holland to get the strikers sorted out ...he listens to her about most things most of the time .
8. All it takes is burnt through signal cables that may be trackside and the result could be carnage . Their action means that all has to be done to inspect repair and test the whole railway to see it is opperating correctly before they dare run a passenger train again .... I would like to see the Union that supports these clowns that do not give a sh..t for the safety of the passeners in the trains .Forced to cover the cost of the illegal action of their members and if they ended up with a bankrupt union in the process then so be it .
9.
And the MyFerryLink staff have done it again, closing Eurotunnel to vehicular traffic and Eurostar, and closing the port of Calais ... IIRC, aren't these the same people who dragged SeaFrance into oblivion?
And from what I have just read.....the French Police not only did nothing while strikers put a My Ferry Link truck in front of the ferry loading ramp ...they put a police vehicle there to keep it company !
10. The words of Jean Claud Junker on the situation in Greece. Given the numbers of Greeks who have taken their own lives due to the financial mess that Greece finds itself in . His words dont give any comfort to their families at this time ....What a daft thing to come out with !
11. There seems to me more of the guys who say they are looking for work cleaning roof tiles off about . I had one who entered through my gates passed my bell which has a cord attached to the clapper and it wakes the dead , and did not use it . I came round from the garden and found him and he then asked me if I wanted my new roof cleaned . You cant be too careful .
12.
To be absolutely fair - the British government has given the French authorities £12m to help pay for the policing at Calais.
Not well spent here was it .....If this had been on the UK side the trains would only have been stopped as long as it took to drag the strikers off and charge them for cutting the fence and tresspass .... Anybody arrested in France ? How long was the tunnel closed ? Oh of course ...French police dont touch strikers they can do what they like it appears ! http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2015/jun/23/travel-chaos-as-channel-tunnel-shuts-and-french-ferry-services-are-cancelled
13. I imagine the French boys in blue sitting back and watching the antics of migrants in Calais along with the striking ferry workers and doing next to nothing to deal with the situation , as shown on the TV news. Is doing more to convince the UK voter to to put his cross down for EU exit tnan any political party could .
14. It appears the migration problem is now up for discussion among the EU leaders today If they need to find money to provide for them on arrival in the EU...and no doubt they will need lots . Then perhaps cutting the funding altogether given for farmers to grow tobacco in some newer member states and cut the spend on the dept advising people to stop smoking might be a good start to find the money ....But my guess is the farmers will not lose a cent the funcionaries will lot lose one job.and they will still be talking and doing nothing about migration issues this time next year while Monaco gets neighbors in a shanty town .!
15.
Given that the euro is a political rather than an economic project, I cannot see the rest of the Eurozone allowing Greece to leave. That is what Greece is banking on (no pun intended). We will see just how far this game of chicken goes on for, but I suspect some sort of concession will arrive, as if by magic and allow Greece to remain, tottering on the brink of leaving for some time yet.
The situation as seen by Max Hastings http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-3135382/MAX-HASTINGS-deal-stitched-Greeks-victory-cowardice-make-euro-crisis-worse.html
16. By doing what they do they avoid having to do any work .....they must be really annoyed that they have to handle those who were daft enough to speed after being told where they were .
17. How much of all this is just a question of money ? How much is about the tail wagging the dog and a need for the masters of the EU to make sure to all the other small member countries ,that when it comes to tail wagging dog ... they know the other end bites ? .
18. Who knows if they are out of the euro zone suffering and resentful the Greeks will want to stay in the EU ? It may well be Putin turns out to be their saviour and then who will call the tune ?
19. I imagine this report will just about guarantee Greece is gone ! German tabloid Bild just gave the financial markets a jolt, by reporting that Greece wants to delay its €1.6bn IMF repayment until the end of this year. It says: According to information obtained by Bild, Greece doesn’t want to pay back any of the June debt instalments to the IMF. It wants to postpone the repayments of the €1.55bn repayment due in June by six months.
20. Many will be watching with interest if it turns out to be the best thing they could have done http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/greece/11676500/Enough-is-enough-Greece-must-leave-the-euro.html
21.
I suspect that one day our grandchildren may ask us why we created an unstable situation in the middle east and then turned our back on the situation we had created.
Correct ... and the EU paid Gadafi to prevent people from crossing the Med as they are today . Mistake gettting rid of him now it appears . As for choosing Germany over the UK as the most popular destination...I think the channel may have more to do with that.. Lets hope they will be happy in Germany but given the history that country has of political factions setting fire to multy occupation houses of Turks and the feeling towards the new arrivals it may all end very badly for some .
22. Australia has islands to which they take "boat people " The rule is any person who arrives in or attempts to go to Australia without first having first gone through the proceedure to be let in will NEVER be permitted entry into the country and that message has been made loud and clear . The only answer IMO is to set up an internment camp on an Italian or Greek island where ALL people who arrive without papars are placed while the applications for acceptance by EU are carried out .The fact that this may take years if ever granted at all to be well advertised The present system of taking a thousand dollars a head to squeeze a couple of humdred into a boat telling them they will not be in it long as the English will be along to pick you up .Is crazy.. They have to know they are heading to a lock up with the prospect that they may be there for years when they are picked up to preven them leaving .... And those already in the EU such as the thousand or more in Calais rounded up and taken to the island . America had Ellis island the Australians have theirs to hold and process people .... but will the socialist leaders of the EU have the balls to even consider such a proposal let alone to agree among themselves to carry it out ? I cant see it so in the meantime we await the million or more that will come our way this summer to build their shelters under flyovers and squat and defecate in the drains at the curb sides.throughout Europe I suspect one day my grandchildren may ask me when it impacts on their lives why we let the current mass immigration situation happen ... ".We were weak."... will be the only answer I may be able to give them .
23. It seems HMS Bulwark and others at this very moment are charging about off the coast of Italy picking of thousands from boats and the BBC news states another 500,000 are waiting to make the attempt to cross the Med ..... Al Jazeera news states a million are preparing to make the crossing this summer . Who is likely to be stating the correct figure .?..I suspect Al Jazeera .I also suspect there will not be many nurses for the NHS to recruit among that lot but we can assume their second language for many will be English so we know where they will be heading The Immigrant population of Calais about to grow larger than the French one soon if this keeps up and IMO The EU do not have any idea what they are going to do about the problem as it means that they have to think about something other than dreaming up regulations for keeping farmers happy and the like .What to do with a million and more unwanted people to handle means real tough decisions to be made and we will wait until the sun freezes over for those from Brussels
24. I watched a bit on the news about Calais fencing and the move up the coast to other ports . As a past boat owner with it moored in a UK harbour ..If I was French and had one in a marina I would be forever wondering if it was srtill there given the current situation . How l;ong before they start fetching up on the UK beaches ?
