  1. Hi Going to our new house next week, but unfortuatly the previous owner has taken all the light fittings from upstairs leaving just those peskly little multi-coloured worms!!! Two questions: 1. Is it very and I mean VERY simple (coz that I was I am very simple at thing like this!) to fix new light fittings? 2. Can we buy light fittings in the UK which will work in France? Merci Dale
  2. Hi. Am taking a Long wheeled based transit van over next week to France - however when looking at booking pages for ferry etc cannot find the VAN option in the pull down lists!!! Please help me to find it! Dale
  3. Hi coming over to watch the start of the stage of Le Tour which begins in Amiens. Aiming to get there early anybody any ideas of a good a vantage point and somewhere easy to park my car? Thanks Dale
  4. Hi - I know that this is a forum concerning France but wonder if you can help me? I remember a few years back going to Belgium and spending the night in an Antwerp car park as the Formule 1 did not have a 24 hour access facility which I think was something to do with them not accepting credit cards/Meastro etc? I am hoping to go to Liege for the start of Le Tour next weekend and as I dont have a credit card just wondering if Maestro etc is generally available as it is in France? thanks Dale
  5. Hi have heard that there is a chain of furniture stores in France called Atlas which offer good value. Does any one have the web address?- have tried to search for it but with no avail! Many thanks Dale
  6. Hi - have just completed on our new home near La Clayette. Can any of you in the area advise places to get good yet cheap furniture and white goods? My wife is constantly scanning Ebay and insists we buy from there and transport it down - I however insist that we should buy it in France. Please help!!!!!!!! Many thanks Dale
  7. Travelled premier class with Speedferries last w/e. Ok got on near the front, but went all the way up to the top of the craft so when we arrived we were nearly last out!! Cold coffee, no newspapers, uncomfy seats and staff who couldn't be bothered. On the return we missed our intended crossing as got caught in traffic, had to pay 10 to get on the later one - even though there was hardly any one on it. Again they had no newpapers although they did manage to scrape up some remnants of a paper three days old! At least on the way back we were put on the lower deck, so were this time first on first off, although with so few travelling it did not make much difference. Im afraid it was 40 not well spent! Dale
  8. What s stupid site is www.ferrysavers.com! Tried to book a crossing for this coming w/e - at the start it gave me loads of times etc which I selected then it is not until Ive actually given over my card number that it tells me that the selected crossings I've chosen are not available but that they will automatically book me on the next available one which wasn't to the next day! I therefore had to phone them up to cancel what they had done and reclaim my money! What a waste of time! Dale
  9. Excuse my ignorance - but is that the film about a french primary school - if so can we get it on DVD? thanks Dale
  10. Hi - We are going to next week to complete the sale on our house in France. Just want to be sure that all goes ahead ok and that we take with us all what we need! The Notaires fees are included in the mortgage, so I presume that we do not have to take any money with us? However what about about our first mortgage payment will that need to be paid on the day of completion? Sorry If we seem a bit dumb but this is our first ever house we have bought having always rented in the UK!!! Dale
  11. Hi Following on from my Subject entiled 'their having a laugh', I followed up someones suggestion from a previous post and had a look at the Transmanche website - I nearly fell off the chair! Please could someone tell me that it is really true that I can sail with a car the last weekend in half term for just 40?? There must be a catch? Please let me know what is wrong with Transmanche that it is so cheap? It is important that we are in France that week-end so would not like to take any risks if these ferries are often cancelled? Many thanks again St Jacques
  12. Hi- just trying to book a week-end away at end of half-term so we can go and complete on our house. Cheapest flights even with Ryan air will cost us over three hundred pounds,Eurostar to Lyon over 400- Eurotunnel 350, SeaFrance even with a 3.45AM! ferry 180 and the other companies around the same- HAHAHAHAHAHA! The best I could come up with is Newhaven to Dieppe with their infrequent sailing although may be best route in order to get on the N7 down to 71 where the house is. Any ideas or do you just want to join me with another HAHAHAHAHA Rip Off!!! St. Jaques
  13. Has anybody been to Nigel Farrells restaurant in the Ardeche as featured in the Ch4 programme? Would love to hear what it is really like. St. Jacques
  14. Hmm not sure which bit to put this post in but Im assuming most people intent on buying in France have watched Ch4' 'Place in France - Indian Summer' Does anyone have on tape the final episode to borrow as we missed it. Would be happy to pay for postage etc. thanks St. Jacques Wonder how Nigel is getting on standing for election as Mayor?
  15. > >The best ones are the ones >who have spent time in >India, of course, cos they >can cook curries! > > Lets hear it for Nippi, Nigel and Rezza!!
  16. Hi. We are waiting a date to complete on our French House. A few weeks ago I recieved from the French estate agents a Contrat for Butagaz which I presume we need to complete in order to take over the supply from the previous owner. Just a few questions: 1. It seems that we have to pay a deposit for the fuel tank, which is 880 Eur for tank with a 1200Kg capacity is this correct? 2. The estate agents have filled in what our annual consumption will be as 1.5 tonnes - just about evrything is run by gas exept for lighting - does this seem right even if we will only be visting around six times a year at the moment. 3. Do we have to fill the tank up? 4. Should we have this done before we complete the sale or can we wait until that has been done? Many thanks St. Jacques
  17. Have just read in latest ed of 'Place in the Sun' magazine, that if a property is over five years old we have to pay 6% in stamp duty. This is the first I've heard of having to do that and we are now getting a bit worried if we will be able to find that extra money. We are hopefully going to complete next month. So is this right? And if we do have to pay when is it due and who is it paid to etc? Many thanks St. Jacques
  18. Hi - have noe recieved our contract from Credit Agricole for our mortgage but am a little confused what to do next? This is how we see it after trying to translate our Guide Emprunter. We need to sign the Acceptation de l'offre d'un montant with the date we recieved it - la date de reception?, the amount , the date which has to be the date we recieved it plus a minimum of 11 days, the place we sign it (le lieu?) and our signatures. We then send this off to CA. Then we think we have to sign the actual Offre De Credit Immobilier on the last page where it says signature du contract par l'empruntuer and send that to the Notaire? If this is correct do we send the whole contract, just the back page, or a copy? Have we got this right?!!!!! Thanks Dale
  19. Sent off all our documents over a week ago to Credit Agricole in Lyon who have translated them and sent them to the branch where our mortgage is being considered. Still haven't heard from them regarding a Oui or a Non. How long does it usually take and is no news good news?? St Jacques
  20. Following on from an earlier post which I entitled 'Lets hear it for Flunch' - I am sorry but I have to say the same thing about the home of the Big Mac. Have just returned from a busy weeks house- hunting with my wife and two year old and to be honest niot sure what we would of done without them. Quick, clean, friendly, meals that taste good (much more variety than in the UK) and best of all most of the restaurants have wonderdful play areas for children -something which was greatly appreciated by our daughter who had suffered dreary estate agents, banks and numerous property visits!! So I know I probably won't be very popular but I am not afraid to say it that we 'love Mcdonalds'! and like the French will be a regular visitor when we move out there.
  21. Hi - did anyone here visit last weeks 'Vive La France'expo at Olympia? Did you buy an 'authentic' french baguette at 1.50?! -we are certain they got them from Tesco, def not France! Dale
  22. Does abyone know or know where I can find the Fench words to the title song of Bob the Builder - we have the DVD's but cannot work them out!!! Dale
