1. AnOther.

You say “Cockpit crew are in a position of being able to judge whether or not an iPad is interfering with on board electronics, and do something about it”

    Sorry that is not true.

This from a colleague on another forum may be of interest:

‘As a professional radio engineer who has produced EMC standards and equipment that had to meet them, in my opinion, those who use/fail to switch off cellphones, ipads, wifi etc when told not to are dangerous bloody fools who shouldn't be allowed on an aeroplane.

The only devices that can have radio transmitters in them that can't be switched off are pacemakers and hearing aids. In both cases, the level of the radiation is about 1/10,000 of a cellphone or WiFi - which is why they are acceptable.’

Yes the FAA may have approved so and so but the EASA (CAA/JAA) have not and they are far more safety conscious IMO.

  2. Saw three, presumably women wearing the niqab in a Paris CDG international departure lounge the other day.

As usual, there was a large police presence at the airport but they went unchallenged.

    Not illegal now?

I wonder how they made it through immigration, did they or did they not remove the veil for identification? If not I guess they don’t need a photo in their passports anymore.

  3. Yes I have to agree Chiefluvvie some pretty poor misinformed and sad responses regarding air safety but please BAC 1-11 ancient history! I flew them with Dan in the ‘80s.

As for you Q, starting a RR Spey with a big rubber mallet, what an insult to British engineering. It was a truly great and reliable engine in its day.

Chiefluvvie, are you BA or AF?

    Regards,

    A330-200 rtd

Busy day, just catching up with the latest expert views - some of which I find highly amusing!
Sorry to contradict you Salty Sam, but this is what was said in the article:
Well, if it was in the Daily Wail, it must be right!
Pads, I don't know if the coats you refer to in wild boar hunting are protection or the orange ones so they can be seen easily and not mistaken for a boar.
I would love to see the protective jacket, Kevlar or whatever, with or without orange panels, which would protect a dog against a wild boar! My Springer Spaniel has a protective jacket against brambles and thorns, it's called fur!
Dog Armour, which can include thermal cooling packs for the sceptical.
Ask a Dog Handler why they don't use them!
The dogs could be brought out as a dissuasive for a demonstration, but not a riot and if a demonstration turns into a riot they could retreat and be replaced by something else.  How's that?
Well it would provide some useful work for members of the RSPCA. I beleive that are dab hands with captive bolt guns!
Sam you are banging your head against a brick wall mate.
Yes Nick, you're right. But is it fair on the wall? There must be a few out there who are strictly against the abuse of brick walls[:D]
No I'm not, just try hitting your 'heads' much harder please.

  5.

I know a police dog handler, he once told me ‘you don’t want to know how we train them’ Cruelty comes to mind, I wish the RSPCA could keep a close eye on their methods.
You might care to read through this link and reconsider your suggestion, http://rspcanotwhattheyseem.blogspot.com/2009/11/police-investigate-rspca-for-animal.html
Hmm! That’s an unwelcome surprise. I will certainly reconsider my donations to them.

  6.
I'm sure I've read something about this recently but I can't trace it so I'd be grateful if someone could advise me...

Our 15 year old grandson and 16  old friend are flying  Manchester to Nantes at the end of next week. Both Mums seem to have got everything organized but I am just wondering if at that age the boys will need to carry something like a signed parental permission note.

    Has anyone any info please?
There are regulations but best check with the airline concerned; they may have their own ‘add on’ rules.

  7. Pads, the 101 other worries I know only too well, there is always something. The vets this morning 76€ and another visit next week for a minor op. est. 110€ but he is family and needs to be looked after.

Incidentally, the classes were outside in a muddy field so I don't suppose they were worried about poo on the floor.

  8. Sorry to hear of your sad news. I always thought that the twisted or turned gut

was due to exercise after a meal. When I took my dog to agility classes, the trainers were

most insistent that the dogs exercised on an empty stomach.

  9. Several posts have mentioned Thatcher, why turn on someone who wanted to make the people of Britain proud - they didn't call her the 'Iron Lady' for nothing. Without her, The Falkland Islands would no longer be British.

She diluted Union power, it needed to be done, people were on strike, out of work, the only benefits were to the Union leaders who went home each night to comfort.

As for the US, Maggie and Reagan were trying to build respect on both sides of the 'pond'. No country gives us respect now or looks upon us with admiration for what we have achieved. Sadly her own party  stabbed her in the back, which brings to mind the demise of another gentleman of the Government who expressed his concern for letting all and sundry into the country. Was he wrong? On the contrary, he had foresight. We have practically every nationality living in Britain, and once established who do they employ in their business? The Brits are left to saunter into Welfare offices in order to live.

Baroness Thatcher was a great leader and certainly not a fool as suggested earlier.

  10.

show me one highly successful Socialist / Communist state.
Cuba - in education and health care for the masses rather than the elite.

    Brian (again)
I have been to Cuba many times and personally experienced their healthcare; I wouldn’t describe it as highly successful. I couldn’t even find some basic prescription drugs in Havana.

  11.
The great thing about this thread is that everyone seems to be able to link the riots to their own particular hobby horse. Very easy to do when, of course, nobody has the faintest idea how it all blew up. I blame it on the repeal of the Corn Laws. Never had these sort of greedfest riots when that was in force. I also blame, in no particular order: The Tories, Labour, Thatcher, Blair, Jeremy Kyle, The Welfare State, Immigration, Emigration, Pollination and masturbation, the French, the Parents, Mao Tse Tung, that nasty woman who lived down the road with the funny eye, Tesco, Ryanair, the Euro, Caligula, Masterchef. I may have left a few out.
Yes you have, yourself possibly?
Why do these 'thugs' cover their faces and wear hoods ? Could it possibly be because the darlings actually know they are doing something wrong.......? Bang em up! Simon :-)
But Simon, there is no room in the jails and the PC & human rights mob are against it.

I say bring back the birch and give them a real good thrashing and to hell with what the do gooders think.
Then what?  That's it  - problem solved?

    Brian (again)
Ah pacifism thoughts I believe, ‘what next?’ the same again.[6]

  14.
If you mean the people working on the black what exactly do you suggest I say to them ?
‘What exactly do you suggest I say to them?’

    OMG!

Well, according to your post of 1307 today, they are English, presumably the same language as yours and presumably you are grown up enough to concoct a phrase of your own, or do you want someone to hold your hand, I think you do.

    Do what you must.

  15. Stomach upset: embarras gastrique

    Tear (muscle): déchirure

    Sharp pain : élancement

    Rash: éruption

A bit constipated: un peu échauffé (no wonder I have had odd looks when using this phrase for engines overheating).

    Good luck Sueyh

  16.
Oh dear! Who can you believe here, Piers Morgan or Louise Mensch?

Mr Morgan is known to many as the arch-enemy of Ian Hislop, editor of Private Eye. Mrs Mensch is also known as Louise Bagshawe, author of about a dozen chick-lit bonkbusters.

    and Jeremy Clarkson whacked him

  17.
Hi, Does anyone have info on transport from Rennes Airport to  Rennes railway station, also changing trains at Lorient or Redon - I'll have a decent size suitcase but have an injured shoulder, I've been told to avoid heavy lifting so if it meant changing platforms (down stairs and up again for example) that might not work well. There is a train direct to Quimper buy not until after 4pm.......
Sorry I do not know but changing at Lorient and Redon will probably mean stairs, some do have lifts. The biggest problem I would have thought will be lifting the suitcase on and off the trains. Hopefully there will be someone to help.

Direct to Quimper sounds a good option despite the wait.
