  4. The roadworks are to improve a dangerous junction just south of the airport, and as previously noted they are scheduled to continue into the autumn. It means that the dual carriageway is restricted to just one lane in each direction. The best way to approach the airport is from the north on the D910 "Rocade Ouest". You may still be held up a little if the traffic is very heavy, but far less so than when driving from the south.
  5. The festival Neuvil'en Jazz takes place next week in Neuville de Poitou (15km north-west of Poitiers). This year's programme comprises three nights (Thursday, Friday & Saturday) of free "apéro concerts" in the Neuvil'en Jazz Village, place Aristide-Briand. Refreshments are available, including a special festival menu concocted by the gastronomic, Michelin-starred, restaurant le Saint-Fortunat. On Friday and Saturday nights there will be special open-air concerts by two of France's most acclaimed jazz groups, Les Doigts de l'Homme (jazz guitars played manouche-style) and Pink Turtle (who mix pop and jazz with a big dose of humour), respectively.  These will be staged in the Majestic gardens adjacent to the Jazz Village. Tickets are priced at €20 and can be reserved at Neuville's Tourist Office on 05 49 54 47 80 (English spoken). 6. We're just completing our passport renewal application forms now, and have been debating whether or not we need countersignatories, due to the seemingly conflicting advice on official websites. As you have recently successfully been through the procedure, NormanH, could you please confirm whether you completed the Countersignature Section 9 of the application form and had your photos countersigned? We have found some of our French professional acquaintances (doctor, civil servant) rather reluctant to witness documents for us, especially when they have to divulge personal information, as there are no similar procedures in France. We do, however, know a number of people who may be willing to sign, but are retired. Does anybody know if their signature would be acceptable? Finally, we have no intention of putting the security number of our credit/debit card as required on the payment form, so will be using the mandat-cash option. It's hard to believe that a government department could ask people to take such a blatant security risk.

  9. As French residents, we have had a similar problem when going on holiday (it's all to do with the definition of your "home" country in the event of repatriation), but have always found a solution on the Internet.  There are two companies we would recommend - www.worldwideinsure.com and www.jsinsurance.co.uk. Both offer a very efficient service and reasonable premiums - and websites / policies in English! Fortunately, we have not needed to make a claim, so cannot comment on that aspect. Hope this helps you find a suitable policy - and that you have a good holiday!
  10. I have had a similar problem to "tuppence" on trying to access Internet pages using Mozilla Firefox, but don't even get as far as the Error Message. Instead I just get a little circular symbol and the message "Loading...". My ISP is Orange, so I don't think that's the problem. Mozilla has some suggestions for troubleshooting at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/No+programs+can+load+websites?bl=n&s=loading but so far all my attempts have been unsuccessful. If anyone has further suggestions, I'd be very grateful.
  11. We have been in the same position a couple of times. For a trip to Tunisia in 2006, we used www.worldwideinsure.com and, if I remember correctly, had to ring them to give details of pre-existing medical conditions. This summer we went to Canada, and found the most competitive rate through www.jsinsurance.co.uk. Again we had to answer a medical screening questionnaire over the phone and paid a small additional premium to cover pre-existing conditions. We were very impressed by the efficiency of their service. Fortunately, in neither case did we have to make a claim. Hope this helps you find a suitable policy - and that you have a good holiday!
  12. I wonder if any of you are marketing / design / print experts who can help me with the following translation. I am writing to an organisation requesting a copy of "the original artwork for their logo", so that it can be reproduced in a printed document. I have found several expressions on the Web - "charte graphique du logotype", "image vectorielle", "déclinaison du logo", "dessin-modèle" - but none appear to be exactly what I need. My current thinking is "un original du visuel que l'éditeur pourra utiliser pour la mise en page". Any improvement on this would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
