  1. Here as a lawyer and I agree with what has been posted. Forget the 'not a good idea' and the virtues and otherwise of this deal. The simple fact is that your friend has lots of problems on his hands (lots) Yes the French system is long winded but for this sum of money and when (not if) they get judgment they will come knocking on his door in the UK. It will not rest here in France for there are agreements now in place (and have been for some considerable time) whereby judgments are very simply 'sent' between the two countries. I agree that for smaller sums and in differing economic times they may well not chase your friend. But for 274000+ they will and this development does seem to be a developer of some worth. If this goes very wrong and here I am presuming your friend has a home in the UK in that you say that he has not been able to organise a mortgage but of course he may have been trying to arrange a mortgage on the apartment? Whatever they will push hard and if he has assets they may not be there for too long. If I may say so he does appear to have a gung ho approach to this. Sand and head is not good and just in case he thinks they will not come knocking there is a well known legal case where a writ was served on a English guy living in France and who only popped over for Ascot!
  2. As to peaches you will appreciate that peach leaf curl comes in the atmosphere and whilst it may not be possible for free standing peaches the peaches that are grown against a wall can be covered with a framework (sapin du nord) and with plastic covering but with the sides left open for insects and bees to get in from December to May. Did it this year and had wonderful results.
  3. I am with Tony on this I just find it incomprehensible that individuals are paid so much money a la bankers and let us say footballers. But it is not envy it is simply the market place. My first love is cricket but look behind the so-called English players and the Chairman of one so called English player is of course Sir Ian Botham. When you hear Sir Ian commenting upon one let us say South African but now English player you can see where the motives are. I say marketing the player who was not even born in the UK. Once upon a time to play for Yorkshire you had to be born within the county boundaries. As in Brian Close Geoffrey Boycott et al. However what do I know I am old and past it . Why should I complain. In Wales we even have had in the past New Zeland South Africans and others playing for our national Rugby side. Thus we traded off the success of the Welsh side (not in the 70's or 80's) for some of the successes of the last few years. Still what do I know
  4. Saw our game against Samoa turned it off at the end. There is no doubt whatsoever we have talent but Wales just simply ran out of ideas. Still I think we have three home games this year including the first Friday game in February against les bleus. Then maybe Ireland and Italy so three home wins? Still say at least its amongst the best stadium in the world and of course right bang in the middle of a wonderful city.
  5. I would like to add my congrats to Chancer and without wishing to hijack his posting I too have been in a battle with the Impots. Thought we were getting somewhere then two steps back and all of that. Ok fine lets all go to Concilliator then some stronger letters and hair tearing situations. Friday 13th a letter confirming a degrevement on our tax of 1333 euros! Normally I do not even go out on the 13th!
  6. I come to this late and with my lawyers hat on. It is always the better route to negotiate and sort things out unless the use of the legal process is the last resort. However negotiation normally takes place within days if not hours of a problem occurring. At this stage this is beyond all possibility. Forget absolutely the system here it is nothing like our civil law and we might be upset that our English Civil Law system does not hold sway here but that is life. If more people negotiated and one of the parties said sorry and resolved the issues (if possible) then you would not have lawyers.
  7. Dear Parsnips tried to get the PM working this morning without success will try later. rdgs
  8. yes of course Billy10 but is it not just a throw of the dice? Sometimes all of this just gets to me and of course you also think to make sure that no mess after you go then you should go first. Essentially all I wish is that after my death either my wife or her family benefit and having spent lots of euros on the quest I am fairly certain that one cannot overturn the French system
  9. Hi Billy10. We have bought en tontine with my wife she having children from two previous marriages. We have no children from this union. Therefore and to be blunt it would be better if I were to go before my wife in that should I survive her then the line would go to my two elder brothers who do not wish or have any need for any part of my estate. In Essential Welsh terms they could buy and sell me ten times over. If I survive then upon my death my 'family' would have to pay 60% of the value of the estate. I may have this wrong. Inheritance in France goes back to Napoleon and indeed the EU has now started on the road to try to overcome the archaic rules here in France. If in the UK we would wish on our ultimate deaths to give our estate to the Dogs Trust Charity (which we do with our UK estates) then no problem. You try here to set up either a Trust or a discretionary Trust then it is not recognised under the so old fashioned French system. I have tried to ring fence our estate here in France somewhat difficult. It is madness that someone is charged 60% tax in that their younger brother did not have children.
  10. Dear Sweet 17 Please try Auberge la Fontaine aux Bretons at Poric and www.chateausebiniere.com hope this helsp
  11. My neighbour stayed at a complex near Nantes indeed near the coast. You can rent a room by the night or an apartment. It has a first class restaurant and its own potager and everything they grow is bio. Will ask him when I see him but not sure when that is likely to be. They have two dogs and not a problem. Moving Sweet 17?
  12. Yes sorry I did not make myself clear. FX rates are going down all over the place and it is not simply euro or £. Someone somewhere is taking profit so we are again back down to 1.08 euros to the £ We live in the Vendee and there does seem to be some considerable evidence of people thinking of moving back and in some cases physical evidence of some house sales at discounted prices taking place. Someone I know has just seen an increase in habitation tax of over 60% It is getting tougher here.
  13. Hi need to move money across from the UK and have just looked at FX rates on the net. There is red all over the place. What has happened (please) ?
  14. Dear Russethouse it is part of the story at least. However for all of it to happen guess what some well-heeled banker has to get involved and whilst their fees will be probably just 1% or less then their fee income will be huge. That goes as well for those highly intelligent colleagues of mine in the legal profession (they not I) who will put together the contracts and the like.
  15. Now live in the Vendee after some many years in isolation in Normandie. Love it but will probably be moving further south to an area I really love and that being the Rhone. One would have thought being a valley boy as in Porth in the Rhondda Valley and then careers both in banking and latterly law that I would settle down after perhaps 14 moves in my career. Seriously love the Vendee but today like most places is dire and have seen Clint Eastwood and his horse at the top of the street and bushwood being blown by the wind.
  16. We live in the Vendee and my wife has immune system problems in that she takes a very special drug for RA. She saw the Doctor last Friday and my wife thought that he said that both it was not yet available in our area and that indeed she would be written to directly with further details? Is this correct please?
  17. Thanks buelligan I am a member of the organisation HRDA and who seemingly are now in a financial mess and need to raise £100K in that the economic crisis has hit them hard. Also have been a customer of Organic for years. But thanks for the prompt for no catalogue as of yet and that probably is down to the postal situation.
  18. Of course good bad and indifferent accountants and lawyers(I am one) wherever you go. You do appear to be in some form of mess. Whilst living in Normandie had a great accountant who spoke first class English and then he retired but by then had sufficient knowledge of the language to 'know' what to do. Again here in the Vendee another good accountant but with no English whatsoever (and should they have to speak English?) but we can communicate and yesterday they intervened with the Impot guys and its all sorted. However there is a French lady in our region and whose hourly rate is somewhat low and she has wonderful English. Surely there is this sort of 'assist' service in your area? If so grab hold of him or her invest say 100 euros and then at least you will understand what is going on with the Impot guys Your money is better in your bank account than theirs. However do not take your eye of your current accountants for you could find a nasty surprise landing on your door mat one morning.
  19. Here in the Vendee our local guy charges 37 euros an hour for his tiime but as the last posting suggests your basic approach may well not be the end of it for standards seem to be changing month on month
  20. and echalotes I was able to order from them last year and indeed my order for this year has already been posted. We had superb results this year.
  21. Hi not sure if this should be posted here on in the 'renovation' section. Briefly we have an Ideal Standard boiler which runs on oil. It is about four years old its rather large for the buuanderie and is somewhat noisey. We cannot change the fuel in that we do not have room for an outside gas provision either above or beneath the ground. I literally know nothing about such matters but just overheard our neighbours talking the other day about new bio combination boilers and that the impot guys give a credit for the new type of boiler. DIY is not my area of expertise and indeed my wife says I am sadly lacking in such matters. Does anyone please have any information on this subject. thanks
  22. Their new catalogue is now out and their email address is [email protected] They are totally bio producers and have a programme which is based upon getting rid of mildou. I have no financial involvement with these guys.
