  1. Clair how do you define open in the French language. It is not the same as in England or Germany. They look after themselves here. Ok so if you can agree that the market is open and I do not why are they no new entrants to the market. I think we all know the answer to that particular question. So why are Thames Water not in say Paris Lille Lyon or wherever? Do you truly see competition against EDF here in France? This is not Margaret Thatcher land.
  2. Here a small matter. We all value the services that these good folk provide for us. But in the UK such matters as telecoms electricity water et al are exposed to competition and EDF obviously own a lot of our utilities. Please can someone kindly let me know if one of our utilities has had the opportunity of competing with EDF in France. Protectionism prevails here. If Brittany Ferries had to compete in the pure market place without some of their ferries being owned by certain Departments within France there would not be ferries on the Western Crossings. Simlaire argument on the budget airline front. Balance folks
  3. I am in agreement but the alternative argument is that with this digital age that postal use is dropping by up to 10% pa. It is supply demand economics perfect markets and all of that stuff. You cannot beat the market. Who is going to pay for the shortfall in the Pension Fund pot for the Post Office in the UK. When you answer that question you may not wish to protest too much. In Normandie where we used to live a postman who delivered mail was allowed to retire at 50 years of age. Pose again yourselves a question on that point. True markets work under competition.
  4. Powerdesal you are lucky when we lived on Mont Robin a local guy came with his trailer and during the exercise took down both our EDF line and France Telecom. When we asked him who was going to pay he just shrugged his shoulders.
  5. I do hope that those who cut down their own trees replant for the future.
  6. Are there please roadworks on the bridge as we are due to go to Cherbourg shortly and wondered if we could bypass the works and go around the rocade in the Paris direction rdgs
  7. Please can someone help. We live in 85 near Fontenay and I handed in our declaration in May. To date no avis. Has anyone else please near Fontenay received their tax demand yet. I have a phobia over these guys and as I am going back to the UK for a little while near to resolve. My accountant tells us we have grossly overpaid to date by prelevements.
  8. Dear Guile I had sent you an email and in what I think was a forlorn attempt to give you some background information and equally to put you as they say 'right' It was bounced by your ISP. It would not be my intention to post my response on an open basis and thus to expose you once more to ridicule. Here I quote ' Lets hope they are as expert as they think they are.' Guile you know nothing as to the background of let us say the steering group know nothing whatsoever of the legal background and qualifications of certain individuals and indeed you know nothing whatsoever. If you did it and it is not my intention to give you any further oxygen in this regard then you would simply just walk away. Your last sentence is beyond contempt. This is a very serious issue and your input has added nothing.
  9. I just once would add that I have read the judgments Decision Makers Guides plus everything else that legal wise I had to read on DLA. There is something quite amiss here and certainly if we are to take what we are told on face value then either the DWP have changed their approach or as I say something else has been introducted to the subject area. The guidelines are clear and it matters not if they spend more time in the UK (that is a six hour law lecture) the rules are strict 26/52.
  10. Hi Parsnips thanks so very much will email you tomorrow with the declaration. Saying that how does one on this forum scan and paste a document? Obviously it should not be an open document. rdgs
  11. Obviously it is now the 3rd September and still no notification of the tax bill. I am beginning to get worried and for no reason. Should I go in next week and ask. I do not like Tax and Customs people they have supreme powers and I say that as a lawyer.
  12. Thanks and I am now going to buy myself one as a birthday present for yesterday when I reached the dreaded 65. thanks once more
  13. Please has anyone had any experience of growing wisterias as a specimen plant in a pot. We have a courtyard garden so just cannot plant in the ground. (it used to be a parking area for coaches and please do not ask!) thanks
  14. Dear Guile I have had some considerable input with Tony F plus others into the DLA scenario. Some little time ago I put LF on the back burner in that I have another project on the go at the moment but just happened to glance at DLA this morning. I am a lawyer and as a say with others I have see lots of documents lots of guidance notes and lots of judgments and with my friends have drafted a document on the subject of DLA Tony F is absolutely correct in relation to the 26/52 rule and from where I am sat it is impossible to circumvent that particular argument at this moment in time and it is something please believe me that we have been trying to do for many months now. So it is not easy to do and indeed I would say very difficult. Tony F maybe maybe we are not seeing the whole picture. I wish everyone well.
  15. Our kitchen here int the Vendee came through Arthur Bonnet Franchise. He went bust on us. The granite worktops came from the local memorial guy. Be careful make absolutely sure that the surfaces are sealed and sealed and sealed. Unfortunately I believe that most of the granite comes from India and where young children are exploited.
  16. Dear Quillon a bet if the £ does not go over 1.25 by the 31 of December I will give £50 to your charity. If it does achieve let us say 1.26 or more you donate £50 to mine.
  17. Dear Jacquie I am in the law but on the opposite side. I number amongst my friends a CC an ex ACC someone in the SB et al. So I do know the system. But I say to you my pension is not guaranteed unlike the Police Pension which is continued to be paid through Council Tax and indeed subject to RPI Your pension is never to go down the drain mine is. I say this as a lawyer but one who will never do criminal work for it does not pay.
  18. Sweet 17 seemingly you damaged a door of someone who was not responsible for your actions. Thus you caused the damage. No one else? It was not raining there was no frost and no snow? Hands up? I would just pass it to your insurers you do not need to be there. At least in the UK you do not but in France. It happens
  19. Dear Catalpa whilst living in Percy I joined the sous Tension Group. This morning I have received copies of the judgments of the Coutances Tribunal dated 21st August. Have you seen them please. My French does not yet extend to legal stuff but I think and only think that the Prefet has at least been fined for not complying with a 15 day deadline on something or other. As I say I only think.
  20. one should never assume and equally never ever assume in France
  21. I am now off to other things which need my attention so I shall now be missing from this wonderful forum. However my final swansong. Lived here long enough to know that there are good bad and indifferent in any walk of life. It is a percentage game sometimes you win sometimes you do not. Do the research limit the risk that is what we all do or should do in life. Have never used a British builder here in France save for some odd jobs and which in fairness went well. My approach has always been to try to keep the revenue in the village where we have lived provided of course the devis and within reason. To date be in Normandie or here in Vendee not too many problems. Now back to the Uk again a balanced approach is some good some bad. And let me move the argument from British to Welsh and I obviously are from that famed country. I have had again good bad and indifferent experience from my own countryfolk. Thus I say to generalise and to attach a lable to British builders is not the way forward. For your bad experiences there may be three fold to the opposite., I wish you all well.
  22. Until 2007 we lived near Percy and on Mont Robin itself. There are but a handfull of houses there but I defy anyone to find a better view and location. It is superb and our house was originally a holiday home but living almost full time there was an issue due to location my wife's illness and the like. What really made us move was being three times by lightning and which hit both the overhead power lines and FT lines and went through all the cabling in the house. Parafourdres and the like were installed but we still got hit. I remember buying the house in 2001 and signed the contract on the fateful day in September and when a horrific event was taking place in New York. To my mind another horrific event is now taking place. Our purchasers were aware of what was then likely to happen but were relaxed about it all.
  23. I have let us say a relationship with the law. Always had problems in understanding the trial process but of course none of us have seen the evidence. However there is it appears some doubts as to his involvement. I say that it should have gone two ways. The first (and if his illness had allowed) was to the matter to go to appeal for that is the system in our Common Law. Secondly if the Scots have a system of compassionate grounds (that is to say anyone with less than three months to live is released) then so be it provided there is precedent for it and it has not been introduced just simply that he is Lybian and we have relationship with that state. If the Justice Secretary had grounds then he was right to stand four square against the USA. Now I am going to say something that perhaps I will get shot down on. The Scottish Justice Secretary says he has received medical advice that the individual has less than three months to live. Can they be that precise? But I have doubts over this whole issue.
  24. Dear Grimaud dreamer we have moved twice in France and if one were to buy through an agent (and we did not on either occasion) then just add about another 7% to the total. With the Notaire as well you could be facing 14% on top of the cost of the property. However there are many on this forum who have bought and sold many properties and I do not suppose one will ever come across the ideal property. As you say some compromises need to be made. Whatever you do lots of luck
  25. Grimaud dreamer please see my responce in respect to your posting on a differing subject. Here in the Vendee and to keep commercants in the village the nice guys in Nantes keep on giving out EU money to keep them. What happens they take the money work their time and then move on. Our dentist has just moved after ten years for without support he could not make it tick. Nantes have just given our hairdresser some 78000 euros of EU money to stay without it he cannot make a living.
