  1. We have been looking at the 'Godin' range and the salesman in Chateauroux ,whilst very helpful, perhaps confused the issue by showing us the low and high level of the KW, yet not really explaing the practicalities for what we wanted. My wife wants one of the coloured enamel type as opposed to the black. We have not looked at the others yet. Anybody know of other shops we can visit around the Le Blanc, Chateauroux area?  Back home in the UK we did see the 'Charnwood' and the ''Hunter' ranges. It would appear that the sensible option is to go for the bigger as opposed to the smaller. And yes it does get cold, minus 10, a year last February, and I still don't know the French for 'welding'. However, thanks for all the suggestions and info. Regards, Aitch
  2. Thanks for that. I'll give it a go Regards, Aitch
  3. Has anybody got a formula for the size woodburner in a room? Our main room is 6.5m x 5m x 3m, and I have been getiing conflicting advice that I need a 6KW, and up to as much as a 11.5KW woodburner. Would it make any difference that there is a staircase in the middle but to one side of the room? Thanks Aitch
  4. It seems as if your intended alterations are more or less just the same as what we have had done. We did not increase the overall dimensions of the building but did have the garage converted to a bathroom and kitchen, with a bedroom above that.  We had the roof line extended over the garage and used new tiles for the front of the roof and re-used the best of the old tiles at the rear. We kept the A-frame so no alterations required. The staircase was also designed in but has only just been installed. I actually used A4 paper to draw several Plan and Elevations (scaled and accurate as best I could, but I do have drawing experience) which I gave to the builder and these he submitted to the Mairie etc. These plans were acceptable (its been 5 years since). Our ball park figure was £25K, but the figure did go up a little as extra work was required. Hope this helps, Aitch
  5. I have been having problems with the site all day, so it wouldn't load pages 2 and 3 on this thread, hence I wasn't aware that Mailwasher had been mentioned. Still having problems as I have had to log out and  back in to respond with this message. Seems to be a lot of problems with server being unavailable/ not being found, but i don't know if anyone else is having the same dificulties. aitch
  6. Tell him to Try the Yamaha TDM 900. Very underated bike, yet comfy, good upright seating, excellent mirrors, good mpg and plenty of oomph to keep up with the quicker guys should he need it. No sore backside, so 200-250 mile blasts good. Will take panniers and top box and 2 people easily. Good smooth gearbox, so it can be quite relaxed, and benefitis from a Scottoiler. Might not have the status of a BMW but the price difference pays for a lot of petrol / Insurance. Aitch
  7. Just picked up on the thread. Another useful programme to delete/ intercept rogue emails is 'Mailwasher'. It sits betweeen your server and your computer so you can sort out all your emails before they arrive in your inbox. It's a free programme with the option to upgrade to the PRO version. Google Mailwasher to try. I've been  using it for some months now and I haven't yet succumbed to the need for Viagra or the girls on the Rusian dating site. It runs quite safely with IE6/ 7 and doesn't cause any conflicts. Aitch
  8. We currently have a Laguna 2, coming up to 5 years old, so been looking at a replacement Laguna. Ttraipsing round the dealers for various models were advised that if going for the diesel version to consider the dci130bhp. better economy, better pulling. Price on road for comparison, MRRP UK £18300. before you try to screw a discount out of them. If you go for the dci 130bhp as a sport tourer (estate) then the MRRP is £18650. We have been pleased with ours(1.8 petrol), excellent for long distance (32-35mpg), but over the last 18months, have had problems with aircon, the brakes discs all had to be replaced (cars only done 48K) and now at almost 5 years old is due for cambelt, MOT again, and service and the local dealer is wanting the best part of £820 for all the work. The car is only worth £3600, so if keeping the car for a longer period take into acccount the depreciation values and some of the following price guidelines (all UK). Have also had problems with the tyre sensors but they were reset free of charge first time, included in the service the 2nd time, and £25 to reset when they went the third. Replacing tyres to the original Michelins (15K front-23K rear) was £130 a corner, Pirelli's for similar mileage were £105. Now running on Kumho's @ £80 a corner and handling, performance and wear just as good. Renault parts tend to be expensive. Another example. Drivers door mirror cracked. Renault (£25.67) Halfords replacement (£8.99-£16.99) depending on which type you wanted. You'll be happy with the car, as we are, but the costs sometimes creep up on you. Would be worth trying to include potential future costs in your estimates before purchase. Aitch
  9. I found the following in 'Leclerc' and is simple enough for me to use and understand. Plenty of diagrams and photos. 'L'electricite pas de pas', ISBN 2-7372-4119-7,  by Hartmann, Laurent and Zenner, about 7-8euros if I remember rightly, and covers the new legislation that came into force last year. They do quite a range of books and have a website, www.saep.fr Hope this helps Aitch
  10. Have just had new oak front door and shutterrs fitted and I am wondering what is the best treatment to use on them. We are not staining them, just leaving them natural. Would linseed oil be ok to use, or is there someting better and more dedicated to the oak? Any suggestions much appreciated. Aitch
  11. Thanks for the suggestion, but the 'rabbi' in me is trying to keep the costs down as time and tide and return to work are against us. Aitch
  12. Thanks for that ,but Train times not convenient for our travelling/ flight. Can do Southhamton in 21/2 hrs (legally) and gives us more versatility.
  13. Where is the best/ cheapest place to park for Southampton Airport? We are going out for 2 days, but the prices seem to be high and our period does not cover the minimum 3 days in the long term car-park. Any other options/? Thanks Aitch
  14. I will shortly be replacing the existing stop-gap electric water heater (10ltrs) and would like to determine the size of the new one. There would be usually be 3 people staying at the house, sometimes 4, and to cater for showers and washing machine + normal usage etc, is there any guide for capacity?  I am thinking perhaps 150 to 200 cu.lts might be sufficient but any other guidelines. Electrics/ fuses/ circuit breakers etc. are already in place to cater for the larger size. Thanks Aitch
  15. Thanks for the help, much appreciated Aitch
  16. I am trying to get a translation for '40mm foil backed thermal insulation'. My french/ english builders dictionary says 'isolation thermique'. Is this the same as that above? I need to be precise so I can tell my builder what I want. Thanks, Aitch
  17. Nothing better to do, so was browsing ebay (uk site) loads of spares for CM125 inc. left hand panel. worth a look. aitch
  18. Further to your CM125 enquiry, I have found these others which might be of help. They advertise in most of the classic bike mags. I have used one or two of them and they have been ok. (1) BitzaBikes 01823-251973(new spares0 01823-251974 (use spares). they don't have a web address that I can find,  but they do email once you have made contact (2) E.S.B. 01204-535443 or 01942-671822 www.esbmotorcycles.com (3) Oxford Classic Honda 01865-771166, www.classichondamotorcycles.co.uk (4) Tippetts 0208 399 7449 (spares) www.honda-tippetts.co.uk (5) Gov'nors Bridge Motorcycles 01827-712906, www.govnorsbridge.co.uk (6)dk classics 01782-862200 (spares), www.dkspares.co.uk Hope this helps, Aitch
  19. You can also try David Silver Spares (use google for a link) for spares. Although they are UK based they have a good worldwide cache of stock and availablility. Aitch
  20. Had a reply to my letter of complaint within 7 days. Didn't seem too bad a response! There were 2 tickets for free meals on board in their restaurant for future use. However, as there was 3 in our party, they obviously hadn't checked my booking details (I provided them on the letter) I thought this was a little derisory as one of us would miss out, so I returned them outlining the situation or perhaps suggesting they might like to take the equivalent amount off our next crossing. I haven't heard anything now for 2 weeks.........and counting. In view of their recent adverts and today's report about the Pont Aven, is it time to bring back P & O?
  21. I am in the process of having the wiring completed at the house, and then a subsequent CoC. I do not want telephone points, so is there a neccessity for these, or is it 'Mandatory' that they have to be installed? I have had no information from my electrician and he seems happy to provide for all my requirements, or does it depend upon which department (we're 36) you are in?
  22. Don't want to be a downer but I think I am correct in that the DVLA records only go back as far as the mid to late 70's. Before then they do not have the complete details and therefore you could be unlucky to have to take your test again. If that is the case you will probably, if not certainly have to do the CBT/ DAS (Compusory Basic Training/ Direct Access) as it stands at the moment. Your best bet in this case is to contact the DVLA, to check your licence particulars and if you do have to retake everything, book yourself an intensive course 2/3/4/ days in the Uk. Don't even consider the French route. Once you have passed your test you can then exchange the licence if you want to go for a French one. Courses for 2/3/4/ days on average to include bike hire CBT/DAS/ Test fees etc  run between £250-£550 as a guide depending on where you live etc. Try www. dsa.gov.uk  which will give you full details of what is involved and the location of your nearest Training Body. Hope things will be more positive for you, Aitch
  23. When we purchased our house, we set up a bank account with CA Britline and they helped set up Insurance with Pacifica. Been with them for the last 7 years as work on the house progressed. Just made my first claim (only one I hope) and conducted all aspects, in a mixture of English/ French. Bit of a long winded wait to finally get a settlement but generally pleased with their rates. Haven't tried other companies so can't pass judgement. Aitch
  24. By coincidence, I happened to be in our bike meeting last wednesday, and two of my friends were also on the same ship during this incident. Out of their group there were about half a dozen bikes that had toppled over and were damaged. I believe BF have already started to get assessors around. However, I haven't, as of today, yet had a reply to my letter. Aitch
