  1. We are living in France and we have an English caravan and eventually we will attemot to register it. We have just gone through the process of registering a Pajero and as you may appreciate it is a Japanese "grey import ". We were told probably impossible to get it registered so we started by contacting the maker in Paris and from there it took about three months and a lot of form filling, Controle Technique (mot) a visit to the DRIRE but we got there in the end.So I am determined to have a go with the caravan and I have been told that having the door on the other side is not a problem. It will have to have a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer, a gas check and modifications made. It will have to be inspected at home and we will have to make any recommeded changes. Basically, as many things as we had to do with the car. I will let you know how it goes and yes it would have been better to have sold it in UK but we had to live in it for three weeks after we had sold the house so had no choice but to bring it with us as we were homeless until we bought over here.
  2. It is stone but not sure if it reconstituted stone or solid. They are for sale in all the DIY shops.and seem a very popular design. It was in the house when we purchased but had only just  been put in so very clean but after two winters it does need cleaning now and I do not want to use the wrong thing otherwise  OH will have a good old moan.
  3. We have one of the white fire surrounds with a log burner insert, the white fairly modern ones that are sold in all Brico stores. Ours is quite dirty now, yellow marks from the fire so can anyone tell me what to clean it with.  ?

I am so pleased to hear that your little fellow is more settled now that he is back home with you...give hin a big cuddle from me. Our boxer died of a condition that is qiute common with "barrel chested animals" and it can also happen to horses as well. Apparently, the stomach starts rotating and it twists other organs and cuts of the blood supply very quickly and very little can be done, that is what we were told. He died in the car of the owners of the kennels on the way to our vet and the vet told them that even if he had made it to the vet it would have been unlikely that he could have been saved. The only way for him to have survived would have been if it had happened in the vets surgery and they could have operated immediately. I know my husband would dearly love another boxer as we have had boxer dogs for many, many years and our first one lived for eleven years. I did try to find a boxer rescue here in France but with no luck and as I mentioned we "adopted " our Labrador. Maybe when our very old cocker spaniel bitch leaves us and hopefully not for a while yet, although she is thirteen, deaf and has bad eyesight she is still quite sprightly, maybe then we may try to find another boxer who needs a home as ALL our animals over the years have been rescue.  Wishing you all the best with your little Platon

  5. Oh my gosh  !!!! You are such brave women. The thought of having to drive ALL that way would have totally petrified me and I know I could NOT have done it. I know I should have a go and maybe I will take the bull by the horns and try it again but I must admit the French drivers do scare me at times, overtaking when a sane person would not attempt it.  I will post if I have the courage to attempt it and thanks for all your encouraging words.
  6. Oh Frenchie...how very, very sad and how animals get under our skin. Just ten days before we were coming here to live and with his little pet passport all ready, our precious, darling Boxer dog aged only six years just collapsed and died. He was in kennels at the time as we were away saying goodbye to family so we were not there with him at the end. That was almost eighteen months ago and I still cry for him now and again although we still have our old dog and a gorgeous French rescue Labrador. They say time is a great healer and eventually you will smile when you remember all the lovely memories. Always remember LF friends are always there for you.
  7. I have just read all the replies to your thread and some really good advice given to you.  I am not replying to offer any advice at all as I stopped driving in the UK several years ago as I found a lot of the drivers very aggressive and some downright dangerous. My biggest problem is I have not got the nerve to drive in France albeit we live in a rural, quiet area and  OH is getting sick of having to go shopping with me so I admire you for attempting to drive in UK....BRAVO  !!!!!!
  8. Twenty years !!!!! I will be pushing up the daisies by then. Seriously though, all I want is to be able to have a decent conversation with the Frech people as I feel it is purely respect for them and their country.
  9. Wow, now I feel really good and yes i suppose I do know more than I thought I did as I can ask for items in shops and order food in restaurants and funnily enough I can actually read a lot of French but as I am finding, like you, that as  it is getting harder I do not give it as much of my time as I did initially.  Yes, please send any sites that may help me learn a little more. I now feel quite homesick as I notice you are in Cornwall and that is where we used to live before coming here and ALL our children are still in UK so I do get a bit down at times although the kids love coming here and are green with envy. Thanks for all the replies.
  10. You have cheered me up no end. I will persevere and maybe it will all click eventually...verbs....hundreds of them. We have even started to listen to French TV for an hour or so each day as advised by teacher with the hope that some will sink in.  Thanks for spurring me on.
  11. I have just had my sixth lesson and my head aches. Does it get any easier or am I just a dippy person. My husband is getting on so well and he understands it much more than I do and we always have heated words on the way home as he cannot understand why I am finding it so difficult. One of our biggest problems is that we rarely see any French people as we do not have any neighbours. I thought I would grasp the language a lot better than I am although our teacher is excellent and she has said not to expect too much too soon. Anyone else out there struggling or are you all coping with it........give me some hope.
