1. Thanks Idun for your fair comments. It was me not GG who started this post.
2. We've just taken a 2 night break from our second home and driven to Spanish Basque country. Lovely stay in a very comfortable (up market) old Spanish hotel. No washing up, no jobs to do, breakfast prepared for us, very nice indeed.? Sometimes at the end of our stays in France we holiday in Spain near Santander or spend a few nights in Brittany before catching the ferry .
3. If one has to pay a taxi then ordering online and pick up service would be advantageous.
4.
How do you send a pm now? The old method of clicking on the 'pm' under the members name no longer works for me. I get a screen it's true but the message just comes back to me rather than going to the member.
I am beginning to think this is happening to me as well. On the list of PMs sent the recipients name does not appear, all I see is n/a
5. Thanks Idun, it worked well. Email to tell me there was a message and I was able to access it on my mobile, I even managed to log in on that tiny screen.
6. Thanks for your comments Idun and Norman. Perhaps the PM system doesn't work now. In both recent cases I actually mentioned on their posts that I had sent P.M.s. Life on this forum is sometimes a mystery.?
7. This week I've replied to two different posts via PM system. I did this in order to keep the replies non public. Have I heard back from the two I messaged? NO, not a word! Sometimes I wonder why I bother. ?
8. Some years ago I came over on my own to stay for a week at our holiday home. I flew to France, caught the train and friends kindly met me at the station, took me for a quick supermarket shop and dropped me at the house. I had no car . Occasionally I cycled a few miles to the nearest supermarket. It was an o.k. visit but there was no way of getting to a film, brocante or anything of interest in the area. The next larger village has a bit more commerce . The stay was o.k. for a week but for me , no car would not be ideal for a longer stay. This was before the days of online shopping.
9. As I suggested in my p.m. why not order a big (weekly / fortnightly) shop on-line then call a taxi to take you to collect it.
10. Sorry, I sent you a pm. with wrong info. I thought they delivered. You could look at Leclerc at Pons, maybe they would deliver. There's an excellent bio shop nr. Super-U next time I go I will look and see what they offer. The lady there is very helpful.
11. I have sent you a private message.
12. Guardian, the Imperial War museum would be interested to see your dad's wartime diary
13. He is unstable and has now turned into a DICTATOR! Does he consult anyone before he issues his commands? No.
14.
Never ceases to amaze me as to how differently I see the world to others. I never minded Michelle, whereas Mrs T, looks as cold as Posh Spice, neither of whom I consider stunning, or is it that I find great beauty in an easy smile. So if Michelle is a frump then give me that over an the cold woman with the, I believe the expression is, stripper's heels! Interesting times ahead, that is for sure!
Another expression is "All fur and no kn++++rs "
15. Probably but yours seems to be generating wealth!
16. If the OP has not got bored with the bickering and is still following this I'll add my comment. We didn't buy a ruin but have had plenty of work done on our house on France. We also had a small barn made into a little gite so I suppose that was a "renovation from ruin " job. Fortunately over the years we have have got to know a good bunch of artisans, all French and very local. They work well together and have carried out major work while we have been back in the U.K. They have our trust and we've always been impressed and very pleased with their work. We discuss the upcoming work with them and sometimes they send an email or two. I phone occasionally and ask if I need to know about progress or have questions. Speaking reasonable French definitely helps.
17. Albf I am mystified, how come there was a lovely sunset in the morning? Mint there's thick fog here in South East (U.K.) and our Swiss friend I believe is stuck between flights at Heathrow. Flights severely delayed due weather conditions. On U.K news there was talk a few days ago about the bad levels of pollution in London. This time because of the spell of very cold weather and no wind to move the air at all.
18.
Do I expect free WIFI? Yes if I'm paying for the accommodation. The problem with map reading and driving at the same time is that it's virtually impossible if you wear varifocals and very dangerous. Yes you can stop every few km to check the map, but satnav is much easier.
Absolutely Linda !
19. Judith , jonzjob and most who've replied have echoed my thoughts. Sat nav is a lifesaver when I drive to an unknown town (That's not the problem ) and have to locate a Hall or venue where I am due to give a talk or teach. Great for getting one around one way traffic systems too. Albf you've posted your question in the Gite owner's section. WiFi most would agree is a requirement way above offering T.V. these days.
20. Sending loads of sympathy to one and all. Mint carry on with the Nordic walking just avoid mud and race events. Today I am taking out a group of Nordic walkers. Having walked the route last Saturday I now know where the muddy section is and will avoid that. Don't stop, just proceed with caution. Take care!
21. I love my tagines. I have 3 ! A small Pillivuyt one in our little gite. A cream and blue French one (make unknown) in Fr. house and this was the start of tagline cooking for me. I too have an Emile Henry huge tagine in the U.K. The Emile Henry tagine was, a free gift a few years ago with Super U points . I also had one of the E H casserole dishes but sadly that cracked. ? In France with no dishwasher the tagine is a good way of cooking / serving food and saving washing up.?
22. Garden Girl did you receive an email I sent you weeks ago? Food, Now the days are cooler and I've finished wandering the Camino Frances I'm enjoying cooking and eating real food, jacket potatoes, cauliflower cheese and homemade soups. Simple pleasures.?
23. "everyone wants to escape the U.K. and move to France" Really? Albf. A bit of a sweeping statement I think.
