1. I still rather suspect this joiner won't be working on his own unless he's making cabinets or some such. The labour rate will be his own labour plus any labourers he brings with him to help......
2. Tell you what I took a Humax HDR back to France with me last week - best thing since sliced bread, honestly. Brilliant.
3. There are a couple of KFC's down this way......
4. Nothing wrong with a bit of dirty bird once in a while. A friend of mine once likened kfc to a pair of old slippers - not the best in the world but at least you know what you're gonna get! Haven't visited the one at Carcassonne yet but I've been a few times to the one in Narbonne which has been there for some time. No complaints and free wifi, which is handy sometimes......
5. Your french property insurance certificate is enough.  See my earlier post with the section copied from the gov site now in red......
6. Can I suggest looking here http://www.insurance.fr/import.html and give them a call.  They are very helpful and knowledgeable (?spelling?) with regards to importing processes and complications. With regards to what you put in the 'residence principale' section I believe this the the address of your principal address in France, rather than your principal residence worldwide - i.e. you may own two or more properties in France, so your principal French one goes in here.  It's not a declaration about your main home, it's about the address where the vehicle will be kept and where you can be reached for any motoring offences.
7. You say you went to the prefecture to 'start' the process - prefecture is the last step where upon you walk out of the office with a slip of paper which has your new french reg number on it so you can go get the plates made up. If I were in your shoes I'd be tempted to tell a little white lie and say 'yes, of course I am resident in France....'  But like I said earlier that question shouldn't arise if you have produced an allowable document with your French address on it.  Acceptable documents listed in the blue band on the right here http://www.ants.interieur.gouv.fr/siv/Immatriculation-d-un-vehicule-d.html?_r=y Copied from aforementioned site via google translation; Documentary evidence of domicile for individuals (original or photocopy of one of the following): - A title, a certificate of taxation or taxation not less than the previous year, a rent receipt, gas, electricity or telephone within six months, proof of home insurance, a sworn statement provided by housing (+ identity and proof of the host + official documents secu card, as family allowances, anpe ...), a special travel booklet, a booklet movement or movement carnet valid for persons to whom the Act provides a common connection, a certificate establishing their link with the host organization on a list established by the prefect and in Paris by Commissioner of Police for people unable to provide proof of their address or that the law does not set a common connection. (note the water bill is not an accepted proof)
8. How did the prefecture know your principle residence is not in France?  If you present a utility bill addressed to your French property, together with all other documentation that should be that..........when I registered our car the question of residency never even came up.
9. Edited cos I reckon gluestick might be right!
10. Nah - can't be bothered with all that iPortal stuff. To be honest I rarely sit down long enough to watch very much. Would have been nice to have iPlayer functionality but no big deal I'll just record what I want and watch when I can. Gonna go out and buy the 320g HDR this arvo. :) Cheers, Ric.
11.
I think the problem lays in politicians behaviour and the way they talk down to us with that "you couldn't possibly understand, leave it to us professionals" attitude. Come PM's Questions and the elections you see them behaving like children in a junior school playground (actually perhaps that's a bit unjust to 5 year old's). They have all been caught to some degree with their fingers in the till stealing the electors tax money and show little remorse afterwards. Labour PM's at PM's questions use it to for self gratification (look at how good we and our party are) and the Tories never ask anything important, they just use it as a 'have a go at Labour' opportunity and the rest are politely told to sit down and shut up. The only pleasure (if you can call it that) I can see from it all is that the new series of "Have I got News for You" is likely to be an absolute hoot, I have already programed by recorder to record them all. If I were in the UK and had any inclination to vote, which I wouldn't, I think I would vote Liberal this time but to be honest I would be more likely to be one of the 70% that Dog mentioned who simply don't bother as none of them offer anything I am interested in and I don't think any of them have got any idea how to sort the country out.
I watched Have I Got News For You last night - very funny!
12. Thought it might. That would have been the last push that made me buy one. Think I'll still go ahead and get one though, been mulling it over for a while now. Comet seem to have a good deal at the mo.....
13. Has anybody tried hooking up their Humax box to their broadband router? Just wondering if iPlayer works through it or if you hit the "service not available outside UK" wall.
14. Are you flying or driving Bubbles?? if you're flying might be worth waiting to get one from HMV at the airport (Stansted???). A bit cheaper than high street prices. eg 64g Touch is £254........I'll check the shuffle prices for you when I go through on Saturday if you wish....
15. OK so I'm a dumbass. I thought the live box plugged into a RJ45 socket but now I realise it doesn't, so I need a RJ11 socket instead. Ah well I'm sure I can use the 45 somewhere......paperweight maybe. Thanks for all the links........
16. Sorry Quillan I should have been more specific. It's an RJ45 for the livebox to plug into. However when I opened up the socket packaging Legrand have very kindly drawn an idiot proof picture. Should be ok then!!!! Thanks for the link though I'll use that when I get round to the phones. Cheers Ric
17. Morning all and happy Easter. Today I will be swapping over my old t shape telephone socket for an RJ45. Anybody tell me which wire goes where? Thought it better to ask before I disconnect myself from the world!! I'm using a Legrand socket by the way. Cheers Ric
18.
Ah Judith you remind me- my flight out of Dallas was delayed - the pilots safety belt was broken, after it was fixed we taxied in advance of take off, but no, the flaps weren't working ! eeek ! Sorry about the the thread hijack....
You'd be surprised how often that happens..........
19. I give up. The current exchange rate is 1.11 http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/currencies/converter/#from=GBP;to=EUR;amt=1 So an optimistic online/currency exchange purchasing rate is 1.01 - 1.06. Who mentioned HMV online???? I can't be bothered anymore.
20. I have the Collins Pro loaded on my iPod touch. Very impressed.
21. Yeah yeah yeah. Still forgot and missed the start of the Aussie GP. D'oh!
22. I know you can pause and stuff through the headphone lead. Can you select an particular album to play? A particular relaxing track? Do you have a screen to see what it is you're looking for? No. To me that's not being in control. So amazon fr have a good deal - sale price is discounted from 380 euro for the 64g touch, amazon UK is not at a sale price. Under normal pricing structures that means in France it's nearly a hundred quid dearer. Go into Darty or Carrefour and you'll pay 360-400. At HMV stores they are £306 and usually include a £25 itunes voucher. So I maintain, under normal pricing structures, iPods are, like lots of things, more expensive in France.
23. Bubbles you might like to download the software which your macbook uses for iPods in advance so you can have a go and see how you get on, what you can download etc. http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/download/ More than music - for example you can rent movies etc for around £3 for 24 hours - once you download a movie you have a month to start watching it, after you begin watching it you have 24 hours to watch it as many times as you want.  Pretty neat.
24. Well now there is a wide choice available to you. For sound quality and macbook connectivity I reckon I'd stick to an iPod. Widely available from the likes of Darty / Carrefour etc. iPod nano would possible suit you well as it's small and light and you can select which music volume you wish to listen to. iPod shuffle is seriously small but you have no control over what you listen to - just set it off and listen to a shuffled mix of everything that is loaded. iPod touch (what I have) is a truly remarkable machine capable of wifi - email - internet access and much much more but probably more than you need. one tip - if possible buy from UK (Amazon??) as they seem to be (like just about everything else) ridiculously expensive in France.
25. i was sitting in the kitchen and there was a tap on the window............I thought - that's a funny place to put a tap
