  1. Sorry about this but I have been working through the Micro Enterprise threads and am totally confused so I wondered if anybody can tell be which points are correct. 1) A Micro Bic is also referred to as a Micro Enterprise, they are one and the same? 2) Two figures have been quoted 76300 and 76000 the latter is made up of 49000 for materials and 27000 for labour. The first figure (76300) was given as a maximum for B&Bs and I can only assume that 300 variance is probably a typo error. Now if this is correct then a turnover of 76000 is amazing for any B&B but I cant see that there will be 49000 of materials involved. To cut to the bone are we really talking 27000 max for B&Bs? 3) In another posting (in fact several) cotisations are mentioned, in the case of a B&B what exactly are they (Social security or/and what)? 4) One posting indicated that the cotisations will be 48% of turnover whilst another says about 2000. The first figure indicated that you pay nearly 50% of your turnover (not profit) straight away to a government agency (CMU?). Being that this system is aimed at small businesss it seems a bit steep. Is there a percentage and what is it (I have heard of a flat figure of 2500 mentioned whatever the turnover)? 5) I also read that the cotisations increase year by year even if your turnover stays exactly the same? Could you therefore end up working for nothing? 6) In another posting it said you dont pay anything on the first 50% of your turnover which seems to contradict the 48% mentioned in 4 above. 7) There must be a formula for all this somewhere so can somebody tell me what the maximum earnings allowed for B&B is as a Micro Enterprise and use that figure as an example and show the percentages and how the figures work out. 8) Are the same regulations/restrictions country wide or do they differ from one department to another? Please dont refer me to any French websites because I am ashamed to say my French is not up to that sort of level (but I am taking lessons) and I am sure I am not alone and this information might make it clearer for others. Many thanks in advance. Q PS I found this information by doing a search here using Micro Enterprise as the key words.
  2. The agent we bought our house through now tells people the market is saturated for Gites in this area, I have also heard (but no proof) of other agencies in other areas saying the same thing. Q
  3. Seeing the post about digital camera's reminded me. Kodak have announced today that it will stop making film for personal use i.e. the likes of you and me. On the TV it didn't say exactly when (or perhaps I missed it). Q
  4. We have moved to France and run a B&B and it has done very well in its first year, so well infact that we are increasing our capacity by 50%. Q
  5. I have used wanadoo with Outlook Express, Outlook full edition and Incredimail with no problems what so ever. Q

  9. The wife rather fancied having a go at smoking some salmon and other items so I bought her a packet of Benson and Hedges, got a slap and told not to be stupid but then I'm a man so what does she expect. I did have years ago a metal box thing that I bought in Norway, used meths and you put sawdust inside then a wire tray with food on top, put the lid on and set fire to the meths under the whole thing, it worked rather well for fish, meat and bangers. So my question is does anyone else home smoke their food, what is the French name of a simular device and where can I buy one (name of shop would be handy or website address). Many thanks Q
  10. Some box's are better than others. When I looked into buying mine I spoke to a couple of shops that I found on the internet. They thought I might have a problem with a Grundig box because the reciever is not very sensitive and might not pick up a signal (we are near the Spanish boarder). I was also told that its power supply is known to have a problem in that it can go bang. It also does not like thunderstorms. The best model sugested to me was the Panasonic, not the new box but the one before that as it has a very high spec reciever, so high spec infact and so it was downgraded in the next model. Hope you can understand this and that it helps. Mazan is your man if he is about for this sort of thing. Q
  11. In Quillan about 3 weeks ago they had a sale of secondhand stuff organised by the school and ski club, there might be one in your area. We saw it advertised in the tabac window. I rather thought of having a go myself (don't laugh) this year and was in Defi Mode and noticed they have some quite cheap adult stuff i.e. ski pants for around 35 (this was in Limoux) so I can only assume (a dangerous thing) that they have kids stuff equally as cheap, may be worth a look. Q
  12. I have to say we have bought our sheets etc from the UK for our Chambres D'Hote via mail order. The reason for this is quality against price. We use only white because they can be boil washed if needed plus you don't have to worry about what sheets go in each room and have you got enough if you have 3 one nighters etc. The problem with this is pillows, we can only find square ones here in quantity so we buy them in from the Uk, again price against quality pays an important part. Having said that we buy polyester and bin them after one year. The reason for this is that whilst you can protect the matress without causing any discomfort it's more difficult with pillows as the creek more with protection covers on. On a visit to the UK we found a place called Matalan which do pillows suitable for our needs for around 7 each (5) and they are quite confortable, infact we use them ourselves. The quilt covers are also white with a slight patern embossed on them, again bought by mail order. All the sheets, pillowcases and quilt covers have lasted very well and after one year are as good as new. The problem we have is with towels, they only last about one year and are the bigest expence to replace. Each guest has three towels, small medium and very large. We dry on the line but finish in the drier because it 'fluffs them up' and gives them that extra 'bounce'. All our sheets etc are ironed and whilst the 'easy iron' conditioner is available over here it has to be said that the UK versions are MUCH better. Just to say we don't buy cheap we buy quality but at a good price. To give you a clue on cost we spent roughly 600 per bed including towels for two people (thats 1,200 per room. We spend another 200 replacing pillows and towels per bed per year. Is it worth it, yes, many of our clients have returned purely on the basis that it's the best nights sleep they have had for months (and no I don't want to know why they sleep so bad normally). Q
  13. What I would like to know is what the hell has this posting and the other about, "A world without Terror" got to do with this forum or France. Both these postings have ended up causing long threads taking up server space on something which is totally out of keeping with this forum. I respectfully sugest that if the poster wishes to make potentially political postings they should do so on a more suitable forum. Q
  14. Hi can somebody tell me what "Boite Numeris". Perhaps Mazan is on line. I have a feeling it's ISDN, some information about it (spead, price etc) would be nice. (I have ADSL so the question is actually posted for another person who does not have ADSL in their area) Q
  15. We had a BBQ in May and were quite supprised that the French did not appear to understand the buffet system. Once the food was cooked and put out they looked at it and wondered what to do. Since then we have followed the sit down and be served system after attending some of the village events. If they can wait on 100+ people we can do it for 20. Q
  16. Webwent to Carcassonne yesterday from Quillan and the main road was OK. The River Aude was very high from Limoux onwards with a few trees floating down. By the time it got to Carcassonne it had quite a rage on. The campsite by the river at Limoux had some water coming in from the river but not much (a couple of inches going about a yard inland). We noticed a lot of fields with water but that was collected rainwater. We had lunch at Limoux. We parked our car in the carpark by the river. The river was about 1M down from road level. Q
  17. It took me a time to read this so I now have a English version if anyone is interested. There were a few things I found interesting A2 - You must provide handicaped access A3 - Grants are available for renovation and adaption. B1 If you clean the room, supply a breakfast and supply other activities OR it is your main source of income then you MUST register it as a company and with the RCS (who ever they are). B4 If you use a agency (such as for example GDF) then all bookings must come through them and they must manage your rooms. What about these cards for foreign clients i.e. getting them and sending them to the police every day? The above points are as I interpreted them so I am willing to except any corrections. Q
  18. Anyone interested. I have hundreds of the things and was thinking of starting up a little enterprise but wanted to find out if their is a interest first. I mentioned DVD's because the bigest ditributer of DVD's in France only produces French language DVD's of US films. Q
