  1. I'm in Bergerac and am now having patchy Sky reception - previously it has been pefect. I understand this is due to the Astra satellite signal being narrowed down and more focused on the UK. Does anyone have an answer to this problem? I have a spare, larger satellite dish - would using this make a difference? Thanks
  2. Oh...that mass murderer!! He's murdered a few scripts too!
  3. Apologies if this has been covered in past years...I don't know why but I find it incongruous to think of Buffalo Bill in Bergerac. I was astounded to see a plaque on a house (next door to a Chinese restaurant!) in Bergerac saying that he stayed there on 9 October 1905. A little research backs this up - see http://books.google.fr/books?id=J9iB7ftjaYIC&pg=PA87&lpg=PA87&dq=buffalo+bill+bergerac&source=bl&ots=zyrheIHokS&sig=D6kmGi_ROSpS0_EWqShuLnGCFDA&hl=en&ei=H2eeToHgO9Gr8QPJhK2UCQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CEcQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q&f=false. Here is the plaque: http://www.flickr.com/photos/martin-m-miles/4171087443/. Can anyone shed anymore light on this episode? Any ideas where his Wild West Show performed in Bergerac?
  4. I heard this American bemoaning the state of French bread about a year ago. An early Christmas present for painophiles? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Good-Bread-Back-Contemporary-History/dp/0822338335/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1304578415&sr=1-1
  5. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the extraordinary hike in restaurant menu prices since the TVA reduction in 2009? In Bergerac, which has very over-priced restaurants anyway (I would estimate c 20% more expensive than their Bordeaux equivalents), I could cite many examples but take L'Imparfait for one ( a nice place to go for a treat). Menu 2 years ago 27 Euros, today 32 (and that is after what should have been a 3 Euro reduction arising from the TVA reduction. So basically a 33% increase. I don't mean to single these guys out - most others are equally as guilty. I can't help feeling these places are taking the short-term view of profit hikes, I suppose thinking that the tourists won't be coming back anyway so let's fleece them. What a shame... Is this just isolated to the Bergerac area or has anyone seen it elsewhere?
  6. Whilst I have been getting to the bottom of this permission lark, a rather annoying thing happened - the wreck of a plastic tub that we had tied up at the bank (this was just a 2 metre hulk that had been patched up to float!) was stolen! some pirate came along and simply cut the cord! actually I wasn't that bothered (otherwise I'd have taken slightly more security measures) but how sad is that? I mention this as a warning to others - there are desperate thieves on the Dordogne!
  7. I'm reading Love and War in the Pyrenees now. It really gives a great perspective on life in the early forties and a good back drop to what was going on. It really opens your eyes to the concentration camps on the French beaches and arounf Rivesaltes etc.
  8. We pay 16.50 for a very good guy in the Dordogne. An extra 8.00 for the mower. I think you might be over-paying.
  9. Sorry about the delay. No permit is required as long as the motor is less than 6 horse power.
  10. Thanks all. We are near Bergerac. We certainly see occasional boats on the river and indeed one is kept by somebody on the opposite bank (who I must speak to). Whether it is an electric outboard or not I don't know. I'm just thinking of a 3.5-4.0m flat-hulled boat usually used for fishing in shallow rivers and creeks.
  11. I'm getting a (very) small boat with outboard motor to pootle about on the Dordogne. Does anyone know if I need any form of permit to do this?
  12. Hi. Anybody know where we can ask for help on changeovers near Bergerac? Our current lady cannot continue so we need someone for next Summer. Many thanks
