1.
Having read the document carefully SD I beg to disagree. The angle of the raised portion to the right is no longer tested, en revanche they are looking for a horizontal beam pattern on the left hand side cut off at 0.8m with a tolerance margin as expressed in 4.1.
My x-type jaguar has just failed it's first CT because the beam pattern was flat, would it be possible for you to point out the section of the document SD provided, that says that the 'kick-up' is not tested. My technical French isn't good enought to figure it out. Thanks
 2.
If I were you I would get a Grand licence. It's also free and allows to to either give or sell wine with any evening meals you serve (not the word 'give', yes even to give wine away you need a licence and it must be with a probler 3 course meal not a sandwich and bag of crisps).
We have been to the Maire this afternoon to get a class 2 license, they stamped the form & told us to take the form to the Duanes, who refused to issue a class 2 license saying that as a Chambres d'hote we couldn't provide evening meals therefore couldn't provide alcohol.
 3.
We said to the Immo we would be using a Notaire in the UK,
Why would you want to use a Notaire in the UK ? (is there such a thing ?) The contact is in France & the language is French I hope I'm not telling you how to suck eggs, but a Notaire is a government employee & looks after both sides so by using different Notairs you will introduce mail delays into the transaction, at the very least.
and several clauses said reports etc would be forwarded once we had returned the signed Compromis.  I thought the idea when buying is to find out all the facts before signing anything (and particularly parting with money!).
Not in France, the seller only obtains (& pays for) a survey when a firm offer is made.
So I requested the copy of the survey we had been promised with the Compromis.  This was done by e-mail, and parts of the Diagnostic was unreadable, due to pop-ups obscuring the page, and when we got rid of the pop-ups, the page disappeared as well.
That sounds as if you have a problem with your computer.
We had always understood that the legal process in Frances takes three or four months. One of the clauses stated "This Act must be settled at the latest by .. eight weeks hence".
Depends upon many factors but our purchase went through in less than 5 weeks. & the 8 weeks would apply to the seller as well.
How could we assure on a point out of our control?
I understand the biggest delay can be getting the sellers 'interested parties' signatures & presumably the Notaire had done some work to ensure that there wouldn't be a delay in that.
but what we are wondering, is this the norm?
Yes, if there is a norm.
Would we have been better using a UK Notaire?
See above, you would probably be better off with a good translator. You must remember the French system is very different from the UK, a buyer can't mess the seller around in France like they can in the UK (Bitter about the last couple of house sales, moi ?)
 4.
I believe that the Freesat cards, unlike subscription ones, are not tied to the box.
I asked that question when I registered a card & was told 'in theory the card is tied to the box but in practice it might not be'
 5. I've just registered a couple of FreeSat cards but used a UK mobile phone. I did try to use an internet phone & it wouldn't connect.
 6. We approached this from the opposite direction. My wife set up an Association as 'Autre création artistique' & according to our accountant, we can offer accommodation, either B & B or self catering for people & partners or friends of those attending the Art Lessons.
 7. They asked me if I wanted the 2nd page of the above form stamped, so I said 'oui' & grabbed it as soon as it was stamped which I assume is enough to protect me. Anyone any idea of the class of license I need to serve wine & beer with evening meals ?, as I mentioned above, the Customs officer said Class 1.
 8. I took the completed form to the Mairie & the 'What do you expect us to do with this' & other comments confirmed my research that there isn't any registered competition for us in the Commune. I also took a trip to our local Customs office to obtain the relevant license, the person I spoke to there insisted that I only need a Class 1 License & that I obtain this from the Mairie. After a 24 hour wait, I have the application form from the Mairie but do I only need a Class 1 license if we are serving alcohol with evening meals ?
 9. I understand that the local Marie needs to be informed when opening a Chambres d'Hotes. Does anyone know the wording of the letter that needs to be used ? Regards
 10. I guess you mean a GPRS or 3G adapter that plugs into your computer & connects to the mobile telephone networks. These are available from most of the French mobile phone companies, see http://www.sfrentreprises.fr/solutions/solutions-data/terminaux-sfr-global-access/cle-3g.jsp for the SFR offering. EDIT With the UK mobile phone companies, it is against their 'Terms & Conditions' to use 3G or GPRS for VoIP phone calls, I don't know, a) how they know, b) If the French companies have the same restrictions.
 11.
I have also noticed that to the left of my incoming e-mails there is the 'paper-clip' icon denoting an attachment. In fact when I double double-click
AVG often adds an attachment containing the scan results. Also NEVER, NEVER, EVER open an attachment unless you are 100% certain of the source & are expecting an attachment from the sender.
 12.
and the Free nos is a 0954 nos
Is that a 'premium rate' for anyone that calls you ?
 13.
You can't set up a prélevement (direct debit) over the telephone in France anyway, in the same way that you can in the UK.
SAUR did for us a couple of weeks ago.
 14.
I'm not sure I'd refer to IE as "popular".
From dictionary.com suited to or intended for the general masses of people:
I'd hazard a guess that well over half of Windows user simply have no idea whatsoever that there are alternatives much less why they might be better off using one of them or inclined to try one out
I would guess well over 90% rather than half. It might be difficult for a computer enthusiast to accept, but now the vast majority of people who sit down in front of a computer couldn't care less what OS/browser/word processor/whatever, they are using, providing it does the (very limited) job they bought it for.
the usage statistics quoted earlier are not about to alter significantly for a long time to come.
That I do agree with :-)
 15.
It's just that with IE I think that my scanners would find a load of tracking cookies etc. and I don't know how to prevent them without blocking the cookies that many sites like banks need to use for whatever reason.
Cookies are pretty benign, although they do make interesting reading when mending friends computers.
It's more the addons than the basic firefox which makes it safer, like noscript.   But maybe IE can do the same these days.   It is a long tome since I used it.
It can.
 16.
And the people interested in internet security.
I've never really understood comments like that, if there was a real or widespread problem with IE (or any other program) I can assure you there would be widespread media comment. I've also never understood why the Unix/Firefox community keep trying to get the rest of the world to change, if either became as popular is Windows/IE their venerabilities (& they are there) would be exploited.

 19.
Sorry BN you are confusing me, domains don't have SMTP servers, outgoing mail uses the SMTP server your ISP allocates.  You can set your POP3 incoming server to the domain name associated with your hosting account,
It probably depends on who your host is, but if you have a POP3 mail box there is normally a SMTP server to go with it. If not I suggest you change your host :-) We have our own server & all the 80 or so domains hosted on it have an SMTP server associated with the domain.
however to send mail it can only be done using the default server configuration supplied by your service provider.Regards
Apart from the recent fiasco with Wanadoo/Orange blocking port 25 traffic, whereby the alternative SMTP port had to be used, that's not true, you can use any SMTP server you have (password) access to.
 20.
My ADSL connection is with Wanadoo where I use their SMTP account for my outbound email.
I assume you have your own domain, if so, why not use that SMTP server for outgoing mail ?
 21.
ICan anyone recommend any kit to fix this problem?
The easiest & quickest way is with a 'HomePlug' device, something like http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking.aspx?for=Home+Networking providing you only have a single phase mains supply.
 22.
provides free internet with unlimited phone calls.
Is there such a thing ? If so, two expressions come to mind: 1, You get what you pay for. 2, There is no such thing as a free lunch.
 23.
Several times now, while on the internet, my computer has frozen and I get a window opening from PC Pitstop stating that my machine has registry problems, and offering to fix them.
First of all, I would try to find out why that pop-up is appearing. The fact the window is appearing means that something untoward is running in the background. Make sure your anti-virus program is up to date & run a full scan. I would then download & run hijackthis (www.hijackthis.de) then go back to www.hijackthis.de & let it analyse the log file.
and if they are safe, reputable and secure.
PC-Pitstop seems legitimate, but that doesn't mean the link from the window goes to is the legitimate site/version.
