  1. I got it from a drunken discussion with a probation officer.
  2. hi I thought small claim court judgements aren't enforceable in law.  If it was me I would put it all behind me as the worry/stress of pursuing it can have a negative effect on health.
  3. hi that 6 months in any 12 months is news to me sunday driver nevertheless I will take you word for it as you are a learned one.
  4. hi As a uk resident you can legally keep a uk reged car at your maison secondaire if you abide by all the rules.  If the only one you fall foul of is the 6 month french rule, go for a day trip across a border and fill up with fuel keeping the receipt.  I wish in some ways I had not re-registered my van in france and just popped it back for the annual mot, and of course our trip to spain/germany  at regular 6 months intervals.
  5. thanks sunday driver for that link.
  6. hi our greenhouse is definately moveable, as most of it blew away in the storms.
  7. hi slightly off the main topic but still about ehic.  I've (holiday home in france, uk resident)  had some treatment here recently and would like to claim back the refundable amount.  I'm not going back to uk until end of april.  I presume I get all the paperwork together and visit my local cpam (limoges or bellac).  Funny when I was going through paying for the various medicines/services nobody wanted to look at my uk ethic card, they just asked me to pay a certain amount.  Hope someone can provide some usefull comment, thanks.
  8. no harm done, nobody has to respond, I was just trying to flush out Ron by mentioning the ducking and diving term.
  9. NormanH, another way to refer to these people, if they really exist, is those who duck and dive.
  10. hi many people who came to france cos it was cheap and they could lead the life.  Now its not cheap and many cannot now afford the good life, so we see an exidus back.  Good luck to you.  I prefer to look for a good quality of life not just cheap places to live.  Where we have a house in the uk the prices are still high, similar houses to ours are selling for 15% more than we paid 4 years ago.
  11. hi I've just checked the sterling nz$ and oz$ rates and found sterling to be mega weak.  The world view of sterling is poor.  I cannot see sterling improving in the short term.
  12. Hi Bugsy, my youngest is a successful car salesman in nz, not satisfied with that he is part way through joing the police force.  I told him a long time ago a good policeman has to be able to shop his granny, wonder if he would shop his dad if he stopped me speeding on my next visit.  How do you know its ron?
  13. Bugsy your accent may be good but your uk passport might give you away.  Is it not domicle that you have to prove not residency.  The more you consider these issues the more you realise its a minefield.  Duckers and divers rule ok.  Is ron about to pounce and take me to task, he doesn't like any mention of duckers and divers.
  14. hi I know ex-pats resident in france who still retain uk property and of course we are told that there is no compulsion in changing a uk licence.  So have you ex-pats resident in france driving your french reged vehicles to the uk had difficulty being able to prove to a suspicious pc where they are resident?
  15. hi the trouble is its difficult to prove where you are resident.  You can be tax resident in more than one state at the same time.  What docs do you french resident x-pats carry on you when you drive to the uk?  In practice I've not had a problem, if asked I would say I'm french resident.
  16. hi Uk residents who take a french reged vehicle to the uk for a short stay should not have a problem.  I have done it a couple of times to bring a load back to france.  If you are in that position, have a return ticket to hand.  As long as you are not trying to get out of paying road fund tax you should be fine.  If stopped you can always say you are in the process of moving to France.
  17. It sounds like ron. Welcome back, the forum has lacked bite without you. Have you moved to the Vendee, or is it just to confuse the enemy?
  18. hi is it really ron from the aveyron, got fed up with quizes?
  19. hi when importing a car into france, especially a new/next to new one work out the cost of the new polluting tax, so as not to get stung.
  20. hi just got hold of this thread, just when I was loosing interest in this forum, thinking it was past its sell by date.  Getting back to the question, for one year I would not advocate joing the french system.  Go back to the uk occasionally and arrange a suitable health insurance.  Keeping a Uk reged car legal should not be a problem.  You can always cross a border for a day after 6 months and fill up with fuel.  In practice you probably need not to take any precations just enjoy your year, if you like it, stay and get registered.
  21. hi best solution is to do what has already been suggested. and get a cheap set of used headlights.
  22. hi we bought free standing oak units sold in the uk but made in vietnam out of old oak.  One has a marble top others wood, I cut a hole in one and dropped the sink in.  We now have an oak kitchen which is fully removable for a ridiculously low price.  Buy one from Ikea by all means, we prefer wood.   I also bought a gas Stoves range cooker (in UK) and fitted it myself, again a bargain price off ebay uk.
  23. hi If you want to be really silly, everyone should register.  I was given a wooden chalet by a neighbour, I asked how much she weanted, she said do some jobs for me.  I replied I already did small jobs for her.  I'm retired I would never take money for any job I do.  People who are working illegally know it, the rest of us can get on being good neighbours without the need to worry.
  24. hi what happened to a number of posts on this topic.  My two have disappeared, I cannot understand why, I've had no communications on the subject.  Whats going on?
  25. split your capital between two houses, there are loads of cheap property in france.  You can rent out uk house, perhaps allow younger family to live there.  Todays world has so many variables, a cautious person like me wants options, I've seen and heard of too many dreams that have gone bad.
