Oy ChrisB, I'm Chris H, born and raised in Hunstanton, are you trying to nick my identity? Why would you want to marry someone from Hunstanton? Were you desperate?

Quick message for you Chris - co-incidentally, my other half DOES know you, you used to be good mates apparently - you lived in Northgate and he lived about 100yards away in Belgrave Avenue..................Tim says Hi!!!

Mog&Meg is a Fenlander, webbed hands and eyes real close together., but she packs a helluva a punch...if stood on a stool!

How long ago did you leave Sunny Hunny - you may well have come across my OH or his Dad (a GP)? They're not too bad these folk from H'ston, once you get them trained properly!
We had the King's Head at Thornham for a while in the early 90's.

Fenlander, now that's a scary prospect..................I tried to get OH to buy a house 'across the river' several years ago, he would have rather had his eyes out with a rusty nail!!!

Do you know Normandy donkeys (or at least the ones around here) all have a cross on their backs?
    [/quote]

It's called the cross of St André and according to legend ...............'on dit que ce serait la Sainte Vierge qui lui a donné la croix qui orne son dos pour le remercier de l'avoir porté jusqu'à Bethlehem et réchauffé l'enfant Jésus ...'

PS Our Normandie donkey, Delboy, has a cross on his back, but the virgin Mary wouldn't have stood a hope in hell of getting on, or indeed, staying on his back!!

  5. We have 4 Alpine goats who are all rejects from the local Chevrerie - They would all otherwise have gone for slaughter and, apart from one, are not old - one is blind in one eye, one has an udder problem etc. We paid between 20-30€ for each of them. It's great to think that they are having the chance to live outside for the rest of their lives: at the Chevrerie, they spend their entire lives tightly stocked in an enclosed barn, where bullying is rife (hence why they get rid of those with defects -they get picked on terribly, and they are not de-horned so can do a lot of damage)

  6. Hi Angela

A poney is something up to around 142 cm (14hh) from then on it becaomes a Double Poney up to about 154/155cm (around 15.1hh), but it also depends on who you speak to.............I would have described my 154cm Lusitano as a horse, but at the vets they say he is a DP, and the chap down the road who breeds Selle Francais Poneys, says he is a horse, even though his SF stallion is about the same size, may be a tad smaller, and he, by definition is a poney!! Confusing, isn't it!!!

I don't think you'll go far wrong if you go by tack sizes ie. Pony size = pony, Cob size = double poney and Full size = horse!

  7. We bought a 3 year old LHD Jeep Cherokee in Germany, imported through a company in the UK (who took my OH's RHD Mitsubishi Shogun in P/Ex), re-registered it very easily in France, and have since been told that now it is French plated, it is probably worth around 1,500€ more than we paid for it!

  8. I can't tell you what you should do, but I can tell you that I know someone who does this and she takes hers and sells them at Vide Greniers, with quite a lot of success!! So much so, in fact, that she was approached by someone from the nearest large town and offered a paid position teaching card-making to adults twice a week, plus card-making workshops for kids in the holidays!!! She turned it down because she doesn't speak French, even though they said it wasn't a problem, she didn't need to talk, just demonstrate!! Pay didn't seem too bad either, from what she gathered, it was around 11,50€/hour NET.

  9. We, too, were not offered any extra help on arriving in France, so used a private tutor. Even though they were doing well after a year or so, we continued with the tutor, as she was very useful in explaining some of the finer grammar points etc that they may not have grasped, and didn't want to ask in class, plus also giving them a hand with the correct way to answer comprehension questions and essay writing. It would be worthwhile paying for private lessons, so your daughter doesn't fall further behind - they tend to zip along at quite a pace once they get into college!!

  10. Hello

I received a rebate this year for a wood-burner supplied and installed by the same company just before Christmas 2005. My rebate was 40% for last year - but it has gone up to 50% this year.
My husband works in the UK and pays UK tax and NI, but we also fill out a French tax return. I was told by two people at the tax office counter that because we don't pay tax in France that we wouldn't be eligable for a  rebate, but asked politely that they check with someone else as that didn't seem right to me. The 'chef' then came out and said that I was right - If we didn't pay tax, then we would receive a cheque for the amount, which we did, about a month ago!

  11. I have never understood why women want boob enhancement - as has been said, they just act as a shelf to spill your food down, they are uncomfortable when riding my horse, and they make me look bigger than I am, because people's eyes are drawn to them and there they stop, not noticing that I am a good 2 sizes smaller on my bottom half!!! Plus the fact that at 45, gravity is rapidly taking over.............do you remember the pencil test when you were younger to see if you had pert boobs?? Well I could hide the whole pencil case there now, and probably the cartable as well!!!
I have no idea how to dress well any more - live in jeans and T-shirts in the Summer and fleeces in the Winter, but what else do you wear in the heart of the countryside to walk the dogs, muck out the horses, and ferry the kids about? I decided that my blonde (bottle!) hair was too ageing, so went for a 'chestnut with deep red tones'...........and, you've guessed it, this being France, came out looking like an explosion in a red-paint factory..........the builders reckoned that in the sunlight my head looked as if it was on fire!! I am gradually deepening the colour, but people's eyes are still widening in astonishment when they see me, and I am not allowed to get out of the car when dropping the boys off anywhere!!!

  12. Well, we are covered by my husband's E106, and all have a French card - no query at all at CPAM when I applied for them! Interestingly, my husband has used a couple of 'walk-in' surgeries in the UK, and attended outpatients at a hospital for changing of dressings, and has never been asked for his card.

  13. As far as the braces are concerned, I am in the middle of that with both my sons at the moment. The initial consultation with the Orthodoniste (not the dentiste) was re-imbursed by both Carte Vitale and Mutuelle. I then had to make an X-ray appt for them - that cost me 36€ for the 2 after the CPAM contribution, because I didn't have radiography with my previous Mutuelle. (I do now!). We now go back to the Orthodoniste who has studied the x-rays and photos that I sent her, and she will give me a quote for the work to be done, which I will pass to my Mutuelle for approval, before starting the work. I took out fairly hefty Mutuelle cover this renewal, so am hoping that most of it will be covered, otherwise 2 at the same time might work out fairly pricey!!
BTW, at the initial appt, she whipped out 4 of my sons baby teeth there and then with a crochet hook thing as his second teeth were growing through - he said it didn't hurt much, but I got a fright when he walked back through with a blood-stained, gappy grin!!

For routine dental treatmnet, that has always been fully re-imbursed for eg fillings. As Val2 says, the free visit really covers just a check up, and in number 1 son's case, painting a protective coating on his back teeth.
