  1. Yes, Paul.  I think he was the one who asked to buy our car a couple of years ago. His company would put the money in our account and a Maersk container would come to our house, load up the car and take it to Marseille for shipping to Nigeria.(actually it was Ivory Coast but let's not split hairs!)
  2. They are still trying! I received an enquiry for a week in February from someone with a Scandinavian sounding name.  Didn't want to open up and start heating running in Feb just for one week, so said no.  They came back and suggested a week in April, so we said yes, can do. Today, they said they wanted to book .  It's the old story again but the the email was full of detail.  A long story about how his employer paid for their family holiday every year, including car hire and everything else ( any jobs going?!). I would get a Certified bank cheque for 4000 euros which I could cash and give them back the residue to book car hire. And by the way, could I arrange car hire for them. Thank God for this forum or I might have been taken in .
  3. Thank you Judie and'You can call me Betty.' Really useful. In the end, I knocked on the neighbour's door, asked politely  and they said 'no problem'.  So all is well.
  4. Part of our house is directly on the boundary line with our neighbour's land. The roof on that side needs essential repair and we need to gain access via his garden.  Yes, of course, we should ask him nicely but relations are a little strained because of his constantly barking dogs. Does anyone know how we stand legally? Many thanks for any contributions ( to the question not the roof !!)

  6. Thank you very much Parsnips. I will now be on firm ground with the lady at the tax office.
  7. This was mentioned a few years ago. I have been trying to get an answer from different professinal sources but no-one seems to have the answer. The tax office says they will have to research it. We know a war pension is tax free in UK. Does anyone have first hand experience of this? Would be grateful for any help.
  8. Hello.  I know this is now quite an old post.  My husband also receives a war pension as well as his military pension. As we know it is tax free in UK but have they taxed you on it in France?  I can't find anyone who knows if a war pension is actually taxed here.
  9. Thank you Cat.  You are clearly very clued up and have confirmed our suspicions. Hibou
  10. We are trying to sell our car and it is advertised on Paruvendu. We had an enquiry from a man who asked to see more photos which we sent. Today we had the following email. Vous pouvez me joindre à ce numéro: 0022565035591. Finalement a combien vous me laissez le vehicule? Cordialement We called the bank who advised us not to give our bank details and that a cheque de banque is certified. Is this perhaps the scam where the money appears in our account.  He changes his mind, wants his money sent back, we send it back and then find his money never cleared in the first place.  I know this has happened with people booking accommodation (thanks to France Forum).  We won't be touching this one.  If you're selling a car, be aware.
  11. Thank you Fairynuff.  Yes we have an appointment with the Maire in 2 weeks time, just thought we would do some research first.
  12. Not really helpful Derf.   It wasn't the case 8 years ago when we bought the property.  The neighbour got divorced after we arrived.  He lives alone and doesn't seem to care.
  13. [:(]We live in a lovely 'heritage village' in the Gard.  When we built our property we had to jump through every hoop possible to comply with the demands of  Batiments de France.  Our neighbour's garden can only be described as a version of Steptoe's yard but much worse. There are old freezers, cement mixers, gas fires and all sorts of other rubbish stacked against our wall as well as along the road fronting edge of his property. Should we ever wish to sell, it will obviously greatly devalue our property.  Does anyone know if there are any rules regarding the upkeep of the appearance of property in a heritage village? Many thanks.
  14. My husband has a military war pension for injuries received in a parachuting accident ie SAP. His invalidity is classed at 40% and he has a certificate to show this. On page 2 of 2042k it says that in France this entitles you to a demi-part supplementaire. Does anyone know if this also applies to us as well as the French? Many thanks in advance. Hibou.
  15. We have also been victims of this company.  We ordered a fridge at the beginning of September and paid by Carte Bleu.  They debited our account immediately. Since then, no one replies to emails or answers the telephone.  This morning I put Showroom 2001 in French Google and it seems that there are hundreds of victims out there. Someone recommended a site called www.e-litige.com but I'm not sure if my French is up to the fine detail.  They promised delivery by October 2nd and I suppose I must wait until then, but I know nothing will arrive because victims on the complaints forum say the premises are closed and empty.  A few people do seem to have been reimbursed. Can anyone give step by step procedure to getting our money back?  If they're in liquidation it may be too late. The general view seems to be that they are just swindlers.
  16. On still days and nights when there is little wind, we have a nasty ingress of septic tank smells through sinks and the bath plug holes and and over flow apertures.  I know that the problem is one of  septic tank vapour rising in the soil pipes to exhaust through open plug holes.  This happens when, on still days and nights, there is no wind to drag the vapours up through the stench pipes outlets. I would have thought that the bottle traps and "S" beds would have prevented this, but this is clearly not the case.  My questions are these:  is it possible to buy some form of vapour trap to stop the ingress of  septic tank vapours back up through the stench pipe? If so where can I obtain one? One way to drag smoke up a chimney is to have a spinner in the top of the pot.  Is there something made in the UK/France to encourage the evacuation of smells from the stench pipe working on this principal?  Otherwise, are there any ideas that I have overlooked like somehow adding an extractor to the venting stench pipe system? I Look forward to hearing your ideas.

    Barking dogs again!

Many thanks for all your views.  Bluebell, I am waiting with baited breath to hear about the sonic device. Thank you, Cooperlola for the water idea. Unfortunately, there is a raised bank of about 2 metres between us and the offenders and I don't think a squirt of water would reach with any force. Hibou.
  18. We love dogs but don't have one at the moment. However, we live in the countryside and every one of our neighbours has dogs. Our two neighbours have 3 dogs each which they keep caged on the boundary of our property ( far enough from their own property as not to be heard by them).  The barking is driving us mad.  Not only that but we also have a gite which is even closer to the dogs than we are and worry that it will affect our business.  We have tried all methods, politely talking to the owners, discussion with the Maire etc.  To get to the point, has anyone ever used the anti-barking machine ( not the collar) and if so,does it work? (I know what the adverts say!).  Any views would be welcome.  Hibou
  19. I have almost finished my return, alleluia, but have one little uncertainty.  In Section VII, I have filled in Columns 4 and 5, no problem.   Is Column 6 asking about expenses incurred in bringing the money over here?  My OH's military pension incurs a charge of about £2.60 per month. Many thanks, Hibou
  20. Thank you, Baz, for the info. We qualify in every respect except the UK address.  We now have to go cap in hand to our UK bank, Lloyds TSB.  We had their credit card but allowed it to lapse because their terms were not as favourable as Saga. C'est la vie! Hibou.
  21. Yes, Baz, it does seem that it's the bank(LV) rather than Saga itself  that is pulling out of  credit cards. One would have hoped, probably naively, that as a long standing reliable customer, we would have been automatically passed on to Allied Irish Bank, but not so.  Ah well, back to the drawing board. Hibou
  22. My Saga credit card (held since before I left UK) was due to expire on April 30th, but the new card did not arrive.  I phoned Saga to be told that they (or their bank Liverpool Victoria) had pulled out of the credit card market and I would not be receiving a card. There was no prior warning. They advised me to telephone Allied Irish Bank, inferring that they would be taking on the business.  I did so, but guess what, no UK address no credit card. Be warned!! 23. Thank you for your help. The computer is called Pool Squad. The PCB is mounted on a stainless steel back plate now. Before it was alu which showed the characteristic signs of pitting with a fine sulphate type dust.  The repair included a new PCB and display along with much else beside. Despite there being a fan inside the computer, it was simply not enough.  Anyway, I want to provide more ventilation and a run off for the spilt salty water to remove the risk of vapour build up from spilt reisdue when cleaning the filter et al.  The acid bidon is co located in the box adjacent to the main valve control unit, but I do not think that it leaks acid vapour through the top.  I can only rectify the  air circulation situation  by moving the lot  above ground, but my knowledge of hydrauics is, at best, sketchy. All helpful advice greatfully received. Many thanks.
  24. Thank you so much for your help.  I have a salt system with computer. Quite often the environment inside the technique box is heavily corrosive with salt/acid vapours. This has led to the computer module failing with a €900 repair bill this year! I simply wish to put the pool equipment at ground level in a block/render facility with plenty of ventilation and a run off for spilt liquids.  Your advice very much appreciated.
  25. A charming retired couple are staying in our rental villa until mid April, pending purchase/ renovation of their home in this area.  They will have to leave in April because our seasonal rentals begin then. I suspect all of you out there are in the same boat as we are.  Is anyone in a position where the would like to rent to a reliable couple for maybe 3 months from April?   They have no pets or children. They need parking for two cars and would be excellent housesitters as well as paying rent. [:D]
