  1. Ah, I see, I wasn't aware of that limitation for data. Maybe will have to download stuff to my phone and then transfer to laptop. Will keep a close eye on things as time goes on then. Have you had any problems in that area Martin? Johnnyboy.
  2. Well folks, I finally have a connection (40Gbps) WooHooo! Had to wait this long as the Free system only gave me 3G signal and would not connect properly, so now have shiny new SFR deal on SIM (same deal) as free and a 4G signal at full strength. Works like a dream using my phone as a hotspot, but will not work in the router. Any ideas please? I need to get that sorted for when our house sitters arrive. Still fumbling my way round the phone as well, doesn't seem to have much of a help section at all! Oh well, back to my fumbling I suppose.
  3. Hi All, could be that in the rush to get on with it, I bought a 1G SIM on Reglo from Leclerc. It may well have run out of limits, but was not sure where I could check for that. Anyway, my new sim was ordered from Free and hope it gets here soon! Not sure how I managed to burn through so much data , but there we go. Definitely could not connect even with 3G showing, it just said network unavailable so may well be the out of limits scenario. My shiny new phone tells you at the top of the screen, which service is connected and at what signal. Will update as and when I can peeps. Johnnyboy.
  4. Could be Castaway, but I have not been able to reconnect to the network since about 1:00 pm. So rather think there is something else happening. Our mast is the one near the junction btw. Johnnyboy.
  5. Hi Martin, just a quick update, I now have a Reglo paygo SIM to test out the system, after a few hiccups getting started all was going really well. When the system kicked in last evening, i had 35 Kbps on our Orange livebox and 52 Mbps on the Sim, through my mobile hotspot. Same this morning and all going swimmingly until this afternoon when the system dropped offline, with only a 3G reception and it says "network disconnected". Not sure if this could be due to maintenance or other works in progress, I wondered if the SFR network shed other systems when it gets really busy? Anyway, to sum up, its fantastic when it works, but I'm not seeing much at the moment! the router was working equally well until we went down to 3G, now it won't even connect. Oh well, just have to hope it comes back soon, meanwhile will have to get by on the clockwork orange!! Just  heads up on the DOOGEE mobile, excellent bit of kit except the SIM tray is rather flimsy and it takes NANO SIM's and not MICRO SIM's as 4 different people had told me, before I bought it!. Cheers, Johnnyboy
  6. This one here Martin: Huawei UNLOCKED B525 4G/LTE 300Mbps Mobile Wi-Fi Router - Black From the reviews, it looks reasonable. Also asked on amazon for sim size and someone replied that it was a micro sim, also a very good router. Johnnyboy.
  7. Good point Martin, luckily both the router and the phone take micro sim cards. I had in fact thought about it before ordering for once! That's what is in my old phone too, so should be able to swap around as required. Interested to see what, if any difference all this will make.  Our internet is running at about 290-530Kb as rule at the moment, but like yesterday morning is prone to dropping to a state where you cannot connect to do a speed check. Orange have been informed of the problem yet again, and we are supposed to be getting a rebate until its sorted, not holding breath though. We expect more works on Thursday! Apparently, the phone will ship out today, so just hope for a quick delivery. Johnnyboy.
  8. Wilco old chap! Although there does seem to be a bit of a delay on the router, just have to be patient yet again I guess. Have done one other thing though, I've ordered a new 4G phone, so hopefully that should arrive in next couple of days. Will then try the hotspot route through that as a temporary measure. Fingers crossed(and everything else!!) Johnnyboy.
  9. Well that's it. Patience has now run out and have ordered a router this pm! After all the works, we still only have 260Kbs download. Will update as and when we get the new goodies. Johnnyboy.
  10. Thanks Martin, think I will get an SFR sim card and try in the old birds' iphone. Guess that should give a pretty good idea of signal. Can try it for a month that way, orange adsl still around the 800-900 Kb mark, so not too bad today. Will see what its like when it rains hard again though. They are supposedly working on the main line tomorrow, so await results of that too. Many thanks again, oh,  BTW lots of people around here are interested too, so may have to be like you and do some demos! Johnnyboy
  11. Wish we were getting that much all the time Martin, its usually around the 400-500 Kb zone. Had a look at the coverage map and it shows not much coverage for our house, but there are lots of trees between us and the mast. Maybe could fit an aerial up high and try I suppose. Will try and see if I can get someone with a 4G phone to roam around a bit! Must say that the cost and service(poor) from orange is getting to me too, this has only been going on for 7-8 months now.
  12. Wow, reached the dizzy heights of 1.4Mb just now, after the technicians' visit! He reckons that the problem is on the line between our village and another village before the exchange in Arnac. Would not accept my thoughts that the trees are resting across the lines in about 8 or 9 places just down the lane. In fact he said that the line down the lane cannot be the problem, as that does not supply our village. The fact that there are no other lines into the village seems to have escaped him! Sigh! We await the result of further works by the heavy lines equipe on Monday. Not holding breath though. Johnnyboy.
  13. Many thanks Martin, will have to investigate that after the technician has been (0800 - 1300). Yep, nearer the 1300 as we thought! Still, at least the dog got an earlier walk!! Johnnyboy.
  14. Hi Martin, our internet slowed to a stop earlier and I await the technician from orange.fr tomorrow morning! The nearest mast to us seems to be Bouyges only, not line of sight, but only a kilometer or so away. SFR mast is about 6-7 kilometers away. Bouyges  prices are somewhat higher than either SFR or Free, I use free for my mobile and get reasonable signal most of the time. You mentioned in a previous post about a booster box and an aerial I recall, do you have any recommendations please? Our speed at the moment is 520Mb, so still not good. Am close to pulling out what little hair remains. Johnnyboy.
  15. Try cutting back on the watering as well, I have reduced the amount to half of normal, but kept the time the same. Johnnyboy
  16. Hi All, long time no post ,due to visitors/weddings/holiday etc. We went on a walk today with our group and ended at a restaurant, where we were informed that our dog was not allowed in since April this year, due to the new law banning dogs from any eateries. Have to say that this was the first we had heard of this, when checking online we could only see that it was up to the owner to decide. Any pointers please, as we were slightly disconcerted to see that the owners dog was given free reign! Need to clarify exactly where we stand, as although we always ask if its ok to bring our dog into a place, it could have quite an effect for us in the future if we cannot do that any more. Best regards, Johnnyboy
  17. I tried these a few years ago, but never did get a prescription to cover all eventualities. You have to remember that with variations in light levels, the focal length changes, if only minutely. Net result was that I had to give up. Ironically I have just completed my trial with specsavers, with just distance correction and a pair of reading glasses. Not ideal, but much better than specs for 16 hours a day! Just as a bonus, when I go skiing next week, I'll be able to see where I'm going. Woohoo! Johnnyboy
  18. Hi Mint, We are in the Haute Vienne and use the Bellac office. I would argue that if you are under the S1 system, there should be no charges against any income. As any income was generated under the social system of another country, how can they justify taking money this way? Just my thoughts of course! Although the guy agreed with me, it remains to be seen what happens in future. Johnnyboy
  19. Hi Mint, been rather busy just lately so have not responded to your request before. Our situation is that we were billed for social contributions for the first time this year due to passing the limit for tax purposes. When we queried it at the office however, the guy agreed that as we are under the S1 system we should not be paying them. I had taken a copy of the regs that Parsnips had kindly posted a while ago, so that helped enormously. Net result is that our contributions were reduced from just over €2,000 to approx €360 and he said that we should be able to claim the rest back when another clause is added to the bill. We are very lucky that he speaks really good English, as we both struggle with "legalese" in french! Hope this helps with your case too. Johnnyboy
  20. Our local office in Bellac, plus the accountant we went to this year(due to some complications ) have both told us they are treated as winnings and therefore you are not liable to pay tax on them. Only any interest generated once the money has been invested/saved in an account. Hope that helps. Johnnyboy
  21. Were you already filing online before you left the UK or is this the first time? Johnnyboy
  22. Hi All, had a call today from a sales rep at Free mobile, they are offering an internet, telephone and TV bundle for €1.19 per month for a year. Then it goes up to €33.99 per month, she said all the details were on their website, but we can't actually see the deal she was offering. Has anyone been contacted/taken up this offer at all? We are currently with Orange telecom and our bundle is €37.23 per month, so possibly worth considering a change. Just wondered if anyone else has info/experience of them, I have their mobile deal at the moment and have to say I'm very pleased so far. Best regards, Johnnyboy
  23. We were rather naive when we bought and renovated our place. Just got carried away and also think that we got turned over by the architect/entreprises to some degree! Having said all of that, we now think that the value of our place is perhaps €100,000 or so below what we put into it. If you take the longer term view though as a friend of ours said, you have to look at it as if you were renting the place. So if we manage to stay here for 10 years say, then we have paid €10,000 per year rent. Possibly quite high for rent, not sure as we don't know any people renting at moment, but its a beautiful place to live so well worth it in our opinion. Johnnyboy
  24. Hi All, We seem to be getting a rash of calls from someone asian - sounding over last couple of days. We have been stringing them along today to try and get them to stop. The call is supposed to be about a problem with windows, we presume they will eventually ask for info on our system. The woman this morning would not give up, but did eventually pass the phone to a guy, but even he gave up and rang off after we left the phone on the table!! Not sure if there is any scam on who pays for the calls, anyone have any ideas please? Johnnyboy.
  25. Thanks Danny, have just tried that, but am unable to get into the system/ diagnostics. It seems to be greyed out and cannot be selected. Johnnyboy
