  1. Ah, that might explain things, had not thought of checking for anything like that.

I have in fact started the process of changing to Bouyguestel after the appalling customer non - service of the girl we tried to speak with online at Free.fr. She was just not interested at all, kept saying she couldn't understand either of us and my wife's french is pretty good!!

Will see how this pans out then.

  2. Afternoon All,

Is anyone else having any problems with free.fr at the moment? I changed over to them a while back and all has been great until just recently. Normally I was seeing 25 to 30 Mbs, but this has dropped to just hundreds of KBs download.

The signal strength is good ( 5 Bars), but mu connection has dropped from 4G to 3G with consequent drop in download speed.

Wondered if my connection has been altered by them or something of that nature?

  3. Me too Idun, I even feel dreadfully guilty about taking them to an uncertain future at the SPA.

Have to think about our old cat and eldest dog though. They were rather upset at the arrival of Nougat (not my choice of name!!) Things have settled down now though and hopefully will remain that way.

PS anybody help with posting a photo of them please?
  4. Wifely was taking our dogs for their usual morning walk through the woods and thought she was going to be attacked by a pack of dogs. The biggest was barking like crazy, but then she saw some others behind him. Turns out that there were two puppies and two adults, the biggest just trying to protect the others. The puppies were about two months old apparently

Sadly they must have been dumped sometime over Sunday night. When I got home we went over to see if they were still there. I sat on the ground and eventually the largest came to me and allowed me to pet him. Cannot be much more than a year old, the black one was a female, but we don't think the puppies were hers as their colouring is completely different. We eventually persuaded the SPA at Limoges to take them in by late afternoon. We then took them down ourselves, nearly two hour round trip!

Who on earth could just dump four lovely little dogs like that without food or water eh? Johnnyboy
  5. Good morning All,

Went down this route a while ago, search for the thread. However, if you look at "cartoradio" website, it gives the position of the masts in the area and also who/what is broadcast.

Very handy for me as the "orange" technician who came to try and fix our landline gave me completely the wrong info!!

If you need to work and stream/game etc, you will probably need a lot more than 50Go /month which is currently on offer. That may mean setting up two routers with different SIM cards, for different needs.

In my case I needed an external aerial to get the best signal, have now put the whole assembly up in the loft space. (Works a treat!)

There are masts all around the Civray area, just depends on your precise location as to which you choose.

Bouygtel, Free, Orange(SOSH) and SFR all available apparently. Ideally, you would need a friend with similar equipment to verify the signal, or your mobile with the relevant SIM card.

  6. Hi All,

I am fairly satisfied with our new system via SOSH now and have ditched the Livebox.

We do however have a couple of slight hitches as follows:

    1) We do not seem to be able to find our voicemail messages, any ideas please?

    2) We also cannot see the number calling in any more, any ideas on that one please?

No regrets, in spite of these, as the service is soooooo much better and faster too, whilst being roughly half the price!!

    Regards,

    Johnnyboy.
  7. Well done Castaway, your map did the trick for me too.

Have now installed my equipment in the attic at the opposite end of the house to original position. (line of sight to nearest mast!! Which I was told by an orange technician was an orange 4G mast) Hmmmmmmm!

I am now getting a fairly constant 21Mbps, even saw nearly 30Mbps late on Saturday evening!

At times it can drop to 5 or 6Mbps, when there is lots of contention on system. Still miles better than the 150Kbps to 1.2Mbps at best on the orange live box.

When I spoke with the helpline, I got into quite an argument with the guy as he could/would not understand that paying €36.90 per month for a patchy service was not my idea of customer service. Tried to offer me a deal of both systems together, for €49.00 per month instead. At which point I lost it and told him exactly where he could stick it!!

Especially as there is a fault on the telephone line to our hamlet, which they cannot repair as it is under the autoroute.

Hey ho, see how we get on from here, with SOSH then.

    Cheers,

    Johnnyboy

  8. thanks Martin, have set the wheels in motion already, especially after my conversation with the help?line the other day.

Explained the situation as to why we were changing supplier (orange France unwilling/unable to repair our line into the village) and then the guy went into a real strop as to why they still want to charge us €50.00 for déconnexion! Net result, we have to write to them and ask for that to be repaid.

According to him, it is now a standard fee for all networks for having the temerity to leave their wonderful company!!

Will update as and when we get a reply.

  9. Hi All,

I have already taken out a contract with SOSH and am happy with the service over the last few months. (Internet via 4G in my router)

Was going to cancel my Orange contract today and spoke to the English helpline, was told that it would be better to combine the contracts and pay €12.00 less per month. Do not use my live box now as its too slow and flaky a connection. It was only a backup until the SOSH system had proved itself. So what would be the point of continuing with both?

I then decided to try and cancel the Orange via the SOSH website, cannot see method of doing this though, as I already have the SOSH contract in place.

Anyone have any pointers to help me please?

    Thanks in advance,

    Johnnyboy
  10. Hi All, just an update on the current situation. Its been a while since I last posted on this subject due to various reasons.

The main being unable to activate the SOSH sim cards on the router, after contacting them online I was sent a new sim card because they could not get the old one to register. Got the new one and lo and behold, the same situation!!

Went through the same routine and they ended up sending me yet another sim card, which finally worked. (Hooray)

Reception was pretty patchy, so had to get an external aerial and extension lead, which has improved the whole deaal.

So now where are we, well, the figures on average are as follows:

    Ping: 32ms

    Download: 15.87 Mbps

    Upload: 8.58 Mbps

It does drop lower at peak times of course, but can equally be a lot higher at off peak.

All in all, much better than the orange.fr livebox at 1.89Mbps and 0.76Mbps as about average times, taken just after the SOSH times.

Still not sure if the 40Gb is enough for a whole month as yet, as I have not had a full months usage to date!!!!

Will post again as and when I have more info.

    Best regards,

    Johnnyboy.

PS have to say the online staff were very helpful and concerned about my situation and did all they could to rectify it.

  11. Thanks Martin, all good info. I am currently on the €19.99 SFR forfait, which gives just 2 Go of download apparently.( I've just hit the buffers!) The SOSH deal specifically states that you can use it for tethering in order to get VOIP/skype etc though. Will order one soonest!!

Your info ref the telephone was interesting and I'll get the €25.00 forfait I think.

Thanks again and will post as soon as I have some more info.

    Johnnyboy.

  12. Some interesting info there Martin, I seem to have hit a 2G download limit with the SFR, so no longer connecting to internet. Was thinking of the SOSH card to try in the router, in the blurb it says 20Go mobile internet (€19.99 deal) am I going to hit a similar limit on that or not I wonder?

SIL has not really had chance to investigate so far, as his parents - in law were here too and things have been quite hectic!

Fingers crossed to have something to report at some stage:)

    Johnnyboy

  13. Hi all, just quick update on the router as requested by Martin. The SFR card simply will not work, in that it does not connect to the network whatever I try. I do however have my son- in law arriving tomorrow evening, who has a degree in computer science. I live in hopes!!

The sim works perfectly in my phone and with tethering is phenomenal.

The Reglo sim worked in the router, but due to a comedy of errors ran out of limits. So the problem I think is that the sfr sim is locked to prevent the router option. That is why I asked about the SOSH card, as reading through the text it seems to offer the router option in there.

Chancer and ALBF, I too have been with Free for some years now and agree their service has been good (including website), but unfortunately for those of us more in the Sticks, there is just no 4G coverage. Yes I can see that is purely a business decision on their part, just does not help Martin and I , plus others like us! Hence the investigation of other means of communication, as Martin pointed out, the abonnement sans engagement can be cancelled anytime.

Since our repeated complaints, Orange.fr have left the voltage turned up on the lines to our hamlet and we can currently see 2.7 Mbps download still. Whether this will change or not, we are keeping a close eye on it.

Will try and give more info as and when peeps.

    Johnnyboy.

  14. Hi Chancer,

I was with free as well, but when I upgraded to their €19.99 plan to get 4G that didn't work anyway. Seems as Martin says, they don't have many 4G masts in Limousin!

Ours is just by the autoroute and has SFR 4G and Orange I think. The Reglo sim picked up 4G, but I had only bought a 1G card, so burnt through that in no time.

I am still having trouble with my router though, does not like the SFR sim at all. The reglo seemed to work just fine, but ran out before I could really test it properly.

That is why I was wondering if the SOSH card would be the answer for me. I hear what you say about free, I felt the same, but will have to go back to their €2.00 deal and leave the SFR to work its magic! Will have a look at the sosh website again, as the reglo deals are not very good, even though it seems to work.

    Johnnyboy.

  15. Hi Martin, thanks for your input, I had a look at the SOSH website y'day and was wondering about that as a stopgap. The router does not even try to connect through the SFR sim, so have left that in my phone to use by tethering. Wondered if the SOSH might fill that gap?

The download on the phone is anything up to 50Mbps, superb, but after y'day, the orange livebox is giving up to 2.7Mbps after they tweeked it! Will keep a close eye on that though, as this is what they did before, then gradually turned it down again.

Will post again as and when and thanks for your tips too.

    Johnnyboy.

  16. Amazing, phoned the orange helpline today to keep us on their radar and they have now turned up the line and am getting 2.7 Mbps download!!

There is definitely a problem on the orange part of the line, the engineers told us so. Apparently its where the line goes under the autoroute, so no quick fix. Was also told that if we are not satisfied with the service, we can get the line disconnected for a charge. At which point I would gladly have climbed through the wire to punch his lights out!!!!!!!!!!

Was further informed that they are aware of the problem and we will just have to wait until the line is upgraded, ie - no repair forthcoming.

We can try for a refund after the line is fixed apparently, but will not hold my breath.

Now for our new system, all is going reasonably well, but have not yet reached 2Gb of download. Will see what its like after that event.

Martin, do you use facetime or skype through your system, f so, how does it affect your consumption? Was thinking of trying skype via my mobile to test it this pm.

Lordy, lordy, these tries are sent to thing us!!!

Will post as and when more info to give peeps.

    Johnnyboy.
