  1. The Tarn is a lovely department with many attractive towns and villages; you would need to be in the south  -  Castres,Mazamet, or  Aussillon -  if you want relatively speedy access to the sea. (Winters can be very cold; minus ten is not unusual). I can't be the only one wondering how you are going to live unless you have enormous equity in your house and/or a large pension. I think you are a bit naive if you imagine you can "make a few bob" teaching English, unless your French is reasonable,  and you have experience of teaching. I don't run a gîte but I think the market is very well catered for already, and there are charges to be considered. However, I'll put my damp cloth away and wish you luck if you continue.
  2. That sounds very much like it, and on the film they were savage in their attacks and destroyed an entire hive. Not a pleasant thought that they may be in France!

    cherry tomatoes

I, too, notice many immaculate and weed-free potagers, however, my neighbour's (French) garden more resembles our somewhat scruffy, but reasonably productive, plot.

    cherry tomatoes

Last year we grew cherries which were really disappointing; this year we have grown a variety called Ruby and they are delicious. I can't believe that in SW Gers you have't got ripe ones yet. My neighbour takes Bastille Day as the day by which he hopes to have ripe tomatoes. This year we beat it by ten days.
  5. I wouldn't say Brian Perkins or Charlotte Green had a regional accent.
  6. I watched a programme a while ago about some Buddhist monks who kept bees. The bees were often attacked and killed by hornets but, of course, the monks could not intervene. There was an impressive image of one of the monks handling a hornet, and they made the ones around here look like plain ordinary wasps.
  7. It's amazing how many of these people that passed through your life you have forgotten. I'm not sure if I actually heard Alvar Liddell reading the news or not.
  8. I forgot about Sylvia Peters.
  9. That Robert Dougall, he used to be on the telly all the time Now you don't see him. Nor Kenneth Kendall or Corbet Woodall, or Richard Baker. And what about Alvar Lidell - he used to read the news all the time. Fame is short-lived.
  10. I found a whopper yesterday scoffing my aubergines - it was a Death's Head Hawk, about the size of my middle finger.
  11. Don't these things happen everywhere? I expect a perusal of any country's newspapers would reveal similar events - human beings are fallible.
  12. Sorry about the asterisks - they appeared automatically, I suppose I should have written "male bird-up"!
  13. I'm still unsure what point you are trying to make as you referred to three other "cock-ups". Are you saying that this is typical of France, because I very much doubt it?
  14. Well, nights really. Hardly a trace of the usual chirrupping here in the SW. Was it the wet spring?
  15. My French neighbour is harvesting his spuds now as he says they might "cook" in the ground if left. It was 35 yesterday! Any views on this  - I'd rather leave them in the ground if possible.
  16. We've got an abri and I'm not entirely convinced that I would have another. It is true that it keeps the pool clean. I clear my baskets about once a year and even then there is hardly anything in them. If you can swim in 18 I reckon you can swim from April to the end of October. It also provides good security. Horribly expensive though! It is also somewhat cumbersome and I think if I had another pool I might go for a heater and decent cover.
  17. I teach French im my local Maison de L'Amitié and my intention is to focus on conversation; however, many of my students like to see things written down and are not comfortable without grammar. I try to avoid it as far as possible because it can kill the pleasure of learning a language - that is to communicate. As for teaching a child, I would want to know something about the school syllabus in order to be able to enhance what is already being learnt.
  18. There seems to be a minimum 10 euro charge for any payment now.
  19. I doubt Australia will contend the Tri-nations; what was the point of sending a France 2nd XV there?
  20. In answer to your question, a certain other forum member whom you seem to have upset, lives there.
  21. I'm a bit concerned that he will be seen as the great Messiah who will lead us out of the wilderness into thrashing the All Blacks. The national game needs a big overhaul and I hope he is the man to do it. He obviously had something as a player and captain but his role is so different now. The elite 32 looks reasonable, he's obviously not bothered about dumping players who may be past their best - Tindall, Kay and Worsley.
  22. Stay away from the Aveyron I should think - for starters!
  23. I didn't see it and feel sorry for Clermont who, I think, have now had nine finals and nine defeats. Makes Glaws seem positively agreeable with three finals and three defeats. The French season just goes on and on and it must have been unbearably hot for rugby.
