  1. Found a picture of my last ones cover, particularly proud of the art work on it so I thought I'd post it, sorry!!

Sadly this one is now out of print, because it sold out in both hardback and paperback, which makes me feel quite good! Secondhand ones come up rarely and are fetching silly money, from which I as the author get, zip!!!

  2. [quote user="Aitch"]---------- that 16mm must have made a big impact on you to remember it after all these years, and through it all your mind was on the demise of the British Motorcycle Industry---- sad , but unlikely .   This is a site for motocyclists , I suggest you look elsewhere for your posts

Seriously? That actually reads like you really took offence, why? I thought it was humourous, or was it the four letter "p" word, like it doesn't exist!!

  3. Let me know how you get on. I have been in a full length cast  (bum to toe) for the past six weeks, which has just been changed to one from below the knee to toe (ruptured Achilles Tendon) for another three weeks, then a cast and boot (and maybe walking!!!!), I have a new new starter to fit to the Ducati, and can't get down the stairs to the garage to fit it, and the sun is out! Even then I wont know when I'll have the strength in my toes to change gear. Jealous? Me? YEP!!! Hope it all goes OK

  4. I think half of the reason the film is so good, is that Anthony Hopkins was soooooooo interested in the subject. While working as a resercher on a BBC docudrama called Across the Lake (about the last ten days of Donald Campbell's ill-fated 1966/67 world water speed record attempt), I met Anthony Hopkins, who was reading a book about? Burt Munro!! So I was altogether surprised to see him in it. Hopkins talent is without doubt submerging himself in the subject. I went to the first screening of Across the Lake with Jean Wales, Donald Campbell's sister, and twice she called Hopkins "Don", and I have been told much the same happened when he played Richard Nixon.

I have the book, "One Good Run, the legend of Burt Munro" by Tim Hanna, and it's even better than the film!!

  5. A potted history!!??

Started racing karts at nine, got as far as F3 and ran out of money (or talent!) Motor Museum curator, and writer/researcher, mainly cars, but aeroplanes, space flight, etc etc Was offered a job as technical director with Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One Management. E.g, I went to all the races, watched the telly (well 36 of them) and told the directors and graphics what they should be showing to illustrate what was going on, and the same in WRC. I also made TV doco's about motorsport (still do, writing and presenting, but for DVD for Yesterdays Racers), if it has an engine, I'll have a go!!

Jaybrand do some really good overalls, might be worth checking them out.

  6. I worked in F1 and the world rally championship for 7 years, and had to have several sets of overalls (wasn't allowed to use any of the ones I used when I was racing), Sparco will do them, but to order only, Stand 21 (a French company) are the same I think. Look on Demon Tweeks on line cat, or of course, Ebay. If your size 9 foot wise, I may have some race boots somewhere.

  7. Oh the editing and proof reading, horrible!!! Once you have read your own work about four hundred and ninty times, it seems dull. boring and I am sure you get word blind and miss more than if someone else did it! I prefer to give my work to two people to proof read, preferably someone who knows nothing of the subject. If it makes sense to them, then it can't be too bad. Hopefully!

  8. Such a small world!!!! 11 hours to go and it's £2.38!!

Yes fiction is more fun. The historical stuff is SOOOOOOOOO interesting, but as soon as you write " then on March 3rd, at 2 o'clock, Major Browm scratched his ear", you have to spend ages proving it from at least ten sources. Then, whenit hit the shelf, or screen, seconds later, Major Browns brother, who refused to be interviewed, writes and says "you got that all wrong"!!

Now the fiction stuff! I write " and the aircraft took off vertically, and accelerated to mach 2 in under five seconds...." and when someone asks how, I say " because I said so!"

Writing is like painting, model making, anything creative (even riding a bike), if your not in the right mood, you make mistakes and it becomes hard work, or a chore. But if your in the right mood, well you can do a couple of chapters (depending on wine intake!)

  9. Last book was about Malcolm and Donald Campbell, called Leap into Legend, I was staggered to see the other day that second hand copies on www.amazon.co.uk were going for £221!!! I worked in F1 for seven years, World Rally Championship and Moto GP, but tend to write about technical history, things I like (makes it easier). TV wise I wrote doco's about cars, boats, areoplanes, Jack the Ripper, Kenndey and Dallas, Russian space programme, but have only recently be persauded by my better half to try fiction. BMWs?? Ducati's surely!!

  10. It's funny, writing is what I did for a living in the UK, and since being here, I haven't had time! I was often asked "I'd love to write, how do you do it?" my answer would be, get a pen and paper, or a PC, and write!

Good luck with it anyway, I can say when you see your first book on your own coffee table, it puts a daft smile on your face for months!!!

  11. Hi, new to the forums, so go gentle!

We moved to Belves, in the Dordogne about two and a half years ago, and I brought my 1996 Ducati Paso with me. I have been told I have to insure it in France as it is ilegal to ride all year on a British policy. Ok, but to do that, it has to be legal for the country it is in, so it will need a TC and to be "converted" to French laws. Problem, as it a "classic" e.g. old, rhd headlights are no longer available, so is there such a thing as a classic bike policy that would ignore that fact, or am I going to have to effect some form of conversion????
