  1. In my opinion Sue is quite correct - you should remove the problem first. Have you run SuperAntiSpyware yet? As I said, it certainly helped with my friends' machine. In case you have problems searching for it -here is the url   http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html The free edition works just fine. As in all these cases, it's important to update the programme regularly and then run - I normally run mine once a week. Hopefully this will help you out and you can then decide whether to change browsers. I have to say, again in my opinion, I quite like IE7 - it certainly seems much more secure than the older versions. I also run Firefox on one of my other machines and I get on quite well with that as well. Regards - Tim
  2. Something like this kept happening to a friend - I downloaded SuperAntiSpyware - did a scan and it sorted out the problem I have it running on all three of my machines - it's free and I've never suffered from this issue. Regards - Tim

    Cotisations

    Thanks guys.   Regards - Tim
  4. I have recently started part time employment here in France and am paid monthly. I was interested to see on the monthly payslip that all the deductions are itemised. My issue is that my French is not up to knowing what the deductions mean in English! Some are obvious, others are not. Does anyone know of a website I can look at that will give me an idea of what they all are. I'm not trying to get out of paying them, I'm just curious to know where the deductions are going. I've put the details in a web translator with little, or no success. Regards - Tim
  5. If you are using the phone plugged into the Livebox to make your calls, then you are already making voice calls over internet protocol (VOIP). It will depend on your internet package as to what charges (if any) will be made for the calls. You will need to see what you are paying for from the Orange website.   Regards - Tim
  6. Ididn't see the article in the way you put it 'The BBC are crying about it' - I am no football fan and I just read it as a news story about what was happening. Tim
  7. Five is on the Humax EPG - at least it's on mine that I've had since just before Christmas. As far as the ITV HD system is concerned - in my humble opinion, and the opinion of everybody on the 'techie' forums, it's a pain in the a**e. Admitedly I rarely watch ITV anyway - ads drive me nuts - but it doesn't work very well. There have been many reports where an HD transmission is scheduled and none appears and no-one seems to be sure when a programme will be broadcast in HD. A dedicated HD channel such as the BBC one, and, as far as I know, the Sky ones, is a much better option. At least you can see on the EPG which programmes are available in HD. It's likely, however, that in the future ITV will have to change their current system as it would appear only to be a jibe towards Sky as ITV HD, when it is on, is not available to Sky HD viewers and I can't see it staying that way for good. If you remember, when Sky digital started, ITV was not even transmitted via the Sky system. For quite some time, there was a channel 103 reserved for ITV but they refused to use it. We'll wait and see what happens. Regards - Tim
  8. We use the same Skype set up as when calling other Skype users - i.e. via the computer, although we do have a set of earphones we sometimes use. If you go for the Skype deal you can store the most frequently used numbers you call in the same list as other Skype users. In addition, there is an answerphone facility for when you are away from the computer or if it is switched off. As you mention, you also get to choose a UK number for people in the UK to call you without having to dial an international number. As most of our friends and family are around the south of England, we chose a London number. We have found that this number is often included in call packages. For example, B.T.s friends and family and free calls after 6p.m. It's also sometimes included in mobile phone deals, so people in the UK can often call us for nothing or very cheaply. It is also possible to receive text messages via the UK number. I suppose I should say at this point that I have no connection with Skype. I hope this information is of some use. Regards - Tim
  9. Well, you need to make sure you're getting like for like for the money. As I said, our €33 a year Skype package is for unlimited calls to UK landlines - it does not include the rest of Europe, nor France. We stil use our F.T. landline for French calls. Where we live I'm not prepared to go for ther full VOIP just in case of a power cut. But that may change in the future. But, it depends on what you use. For us, at the moment, it works well. Regards - Tim
  10. Well I suppose that will depend on how you are paying for your calls via your internet. In my case I could change my internet package with Orange, for which I pay €24.90 to the €29.90 (I think) package which would include calls. That's an extra €5 a month or €60 a year. We use a Skype package instead and we pay annually around €33 for unlimited calls to UK landlines. We, of course, still have to pay for calls within France. So for us, it's a better deal - at the moment. I am always keeping an eye on our usage and if there is any significant change I can always alter the package to include calls within France. As always, I think, with this sort of thing, it depends on your usage and then decide on the package that suits you the best. I hope I haven't 'muddied the waters' too much. Regards - Tim
  11. As I said above - our F.T. contract is for ADSL only at 1 meg. It's €24.90 a month. I'm sure I've heard that F.T. do a system of 'part time' contract but I'm afraid I don't have the details for that, although I'm sure someone else will be able to help. Regards - Tim
  12. To give you an idea, we can only get 1 meg ADSL here. We pay F.T. €24.90 a month. We use Skype via the broadband and we pay €33 a year for unlimited calls to UK landlines. You do not pay, of course, for calls to other Skype users. Regards - Tim
  13. Excellent! I'm glad they've sorted out the problem. I thought that was the most likely problem, after the weather that had been around. Regards - Tim
  14. I thought as much. I am only working part time, but I am paying the cotisations. I will have to make some enquiries. Thanks for the info. Regards - Tim
  15. Well I don't know if this would suit you but we also have the FT deal - 1 meg broadband for €24.90 a month - nothing else. We still have our FT phone line. Through our broadband we use Skype. This gives us free calls to other Skype users and most of our friends and family also use Skype. But for other calls to the UK we pay Skype €33 a year for unlimited calls to UK landlines. This also gives us a UK number so that people in the UK can call us without making an international call. I know that this means for us that the laptop is on most of the time, but only when we're at home and Skype provide an answerphone for when the computer is switched off. There are many deals around and we are always looking to see if there is something that would suit us better, but at the moment, this system does very well for us. Regards - Tim
  16. Agreed - yet again, although I wouldn't take too much notice of a comparison with the signal strengths shown on a Sky box. I have said on here before, they are notoriously poor at giving realistic readings - in the past I've had one machine that always showed I had no signal whatsover and another that was showing a good signal before I had even lifted the dish off the ground to mount it on the wall. Regards - Tim
  17. Channel 4 HD is not available on freesat - at the moment, although there are hopes that it may appear at some time. ITV are playing games with their HD in that, as you say, it is only available to freesat viewers via the red button and not to Sky HD subscribers.Because of this, it's difficult to know when they are transmitting something in HD. As I very rarely watch anything on ITV I don't find this to be a problem. But I do agree, the Humax makes a better job of even the non HD channels than my old Sky box. Regards - Tim
  18. No - a Humax box does not get the Sky HD channels - at the moment, the only free to air HD channels are the BBC one, and the slightly more obscure Luxe TV. Tim
  19. We have been in living in France for over three years. My wife was working in England for one or two weeks a month and is on an extended E106 for our medical cover which expires September 2009. In November she was made reduntant by her company in the UK and is now looking for a new job in England. However, since November I have been doing work in France and making the usual payments into the French system. Can I assume that this will now cover us both in France should she not get another job in England for a while? Any thoughts anybody? Tim
  20. By saying 'ordinary Sky' I assume you mean the other satellite channels as I don't get Sky, only BBC etc. - in that case yes, I agree. I'm very pleased with my Humax PVR. Regards - Tim
  21. Just a thought, is the only way to get the French channels via satellite? Have you explored the terrestrial route? It may be easier than a satellite installation. As I said - just a thought. Regards - Tim
  22. Correct - Five is free to air - the BBC lent them a spot on the satellite - I notice though that it doesn't appear on 105 on a Sky box without a card, it has to accessed via the 'Add Channels'. freesat boxes do not have this issue. Regards - Tim
  23. Well Ron, I think the system operates pretty much in the same way as the UK where, although you may have changed suppliers, B.T. are still responsible for the line as I think that France Telecom are here in France. It caused big problems for us when I worked for B.T. because the other operator would automatically blame B.T. for every fault regardless of what it was, and it often meant that the poor customer was 'batted' back and forth. This is one of the reasons I've stayed with F.T. - for the time being anyway.[:)] Regards - Tim
  24. Well the times can be a little confusing. If you terminate your Sky subscription channels, the card you already have in the receiver reverts to what is called a Freesat from Sky card. This currently means that the card gives you Five on the EPG, Sky 3 - Fiver and it's +1 and Five US and it's +1. You do, of course get the free to air channels - BBC etc. If you continue to use your Sky box without a card, you will lose the above channels, apart from Five (which you still have to tune in manually.) freesat (small 'f'' is deliberate) will not get you Fiver (+1) and Five US (+1) and Sky 3. You talk about a FTV (free to view) card - this is a Freesat from Sky card. If I'm still confusing you, please ask again. Regards - Tim
