1. Guarantee (70,000 euros) is limited to accounts in currencies of the European Economic Area, i.e. excludes dollars and (possibly) Swiss francs (Switzerland is not EEA, but Liechtenstein, which uses Swiss franc, is).
2. I get 25% discount with my AREA telepeage badge, but only on AREA's autoroutes, the rest of France is full price.
3.
Take special care when .... leaving a garage forecourt/shop car park/picnic area/etc.
I make it a rule always to use garages and parking spaces on the right hand side of the road.
4.
A wall mounted flush switch is acceptable provided it's placed in the correct 'zone' within the bathroom.
Above the lavatory?
5. If you want to be cautious then look at the Moody's and S & P ratings for individual banks, and then spread your money around without going over the deposit protection limit (70,000 euros) with any of them.
6. Plenty in 38, and pheramone strips sometimes unavailable in the shops.
7. We have one in our cemetery. Without disrespect for the dead, it is hideous.
8. One could perhaps argue that a foreign commercial payment for an accident or maladie de travail should be granted the same exemptions as a French state payment, as it replaces the securite sociale payments. Or does this mean that incapacity benefit, taxable in the UK, should be tax free in France?
9. David I've sent you a new email. I agree taht there doesn't appear to be an obvious equivalent to PHI in France. If the PHI is to be considered as a pension de prevoyance for a maladie de travail, then I think that the most that it entitles you to is a reduction (abattement) of 10 or 20% in your tax, up to a maximum of the plafond de la securite sociale. See http://ec.europa.eu/employment_social/missoc/2001/f_part5_fr.htm, http://www.securite-sociale.fr/chiffres/baremes/plafond.htm Part of this ceiling is made up of a carer's allowance, which may not apply in your case. Shall be very interested to hear how you get on.
10.
Your PHI income is paid gross because your insurer has no ways or means to deduct tax but that does not mean that it is tax free. You might console yourself with the fact that you will almost certainly pay less tax in France then you would in UK so in some measure you could actually end up better off than those who are taxed at source in UK [;-)]
With respect, PHI payments to a UK taxpayer are not subject to tax of any sort. So the distinction to be made is between the amount received in the UK, without tax, and the amount remaining after any tax due has been deducted in France. The policy insures against loss of the capacity ("permanent health") to work, for whatever reason, and whether or not caused by work. In practice this is done by making regular payments, but this does not mean that those payments are a pension (and typically, payments will cease when the insured reaches pension age).
11.
I thought that we had to declare our world wide income.
If my understanding is correct, in the UK it's considered not to be income, but insurance.
12. I have received conflicting advice on this, but it seems that PHI payments are probably taxable in France. I'm not sure where it goes on the form.
13. I believe that the reporting requirements are more stringent for amounts of 10,000 euros and above.
14. You should consider yourselves lucky to be allowed bonfires at all. Our prefet has banned them at any time.
15. It's contained in EU regulation 261/2004. The position in your friend's circumstances, where (as I understand it) the airline cancels for commercial reasons, is summarised here: http://www.auc.org.uk/default.aspx?catid=306&pagetype=90&pageid=4410. Needless to say, the low cost airlines deny that they are bound in these terms, but after considerable argument I was successful in recovering transport costs for my daughter and her husband from the original (cancelled) airport to the alternative offered by the airline.
16.
She has been offered a full refund or alternatively a flight into Paris.
If my recollection of the regulations is correct, she should be offered a flight to Paris and transport from Paris to the original destination.
17. I do hope Sarkozy isn't suggesting something along those lines to Brown in the Telegraph's picture. I had rather hoped that in moving to France I would get away from party politics.
18. I am confused. Surely there has always been a consular vote of one form or another?
19. Try Cornhill Direct. Unlimited continental cover provided car is registered at your UK address, and this is your main home.
20. I don't know which way you are coming, or where you are going to, but there is a super-peripherique of sorts, which is generally better than the peripherique itself.
21. We use (and like) a motel just off the motorway south east of Troyes, about 280 miles from Calais: http://www.le-val-moret.com/. Around 100 euros bed and breakfast.
22. Thank you for your reply. Is there also a maximum as far as the tax authorities are concerned?
23. Should be grateful for help on the following. Is there a maximum amount (as a percentage of your capital) which you can place in an assurance vie with nominated beneficiaries? Is the answer to the above different if the assurance vie is taken out prior to arrival in France?
