  1. An extract from a post that I put on the Ssangyong Owners Club Forum yesterday:

    "Legislation in France has changed due to EU harmonisation. Provided that you have a new V5 which is EC compliant under directive 1999/37 EC you can re-register your SY in France without a CoC. You can now do this in any department; it doesn't have to be the one you live in, and a current UK MOT is acceptable.

    After a long struggle with Indre et Loire who kept rejecting my application without reason, at one stage stating that I needed to get a CoC from Subaru France ! I went this morning to the Indre Prefecture and all went well except for one teensy weensy missing item - The 'EC compliant' V5C doesn't have the type inserted in box D2 - 'Malheureusement monsieur, vous avez besoin d'un CoC - Desolé.'

    Spoke to DVLA who said they couldn't reissue a corrected V5, and the reason the information was missing was because it hadn't been provided by SY. I retorted that the directive was effective from 1999, and the car was registered in 2000, so they were in breach of EU regulation is issuing a non-compliant document, and If I had all the required details to put in box D2 [from SY] why hadn't they? Long embarrassed silence and I'm waiting for their legal dept to call me back today."

    I actually had a full French translation of everything required to fill in a French carte grise. However dear old DVLA had cut corners on the V5C and omitted to fill in D2 - "Type Variante Version" and because it wasn't on the V5 the prefecture won't accept it.

    Fortunately Ssangyong smiled kindly on me and will send me a CoC FOC.

    It does, however, beg the question why DVLA are issuing V5C's which are required to be Euro-compliant, but when put to the acid test they prove to be non-compliant.

    ......and needless to say I'm still awaiting the promised telephone call from DVLA.........
  2. Indre et Loire [37] still insisting on a CoC, despite me sending them the latest Internet info from the Government. I've tried again, highlighting why I no longer need to produce a CoC, but I'm expecting a Gallic shrug.

    If that's the case I'll ask for the dossier to be returned, then go to 36 at Chateauroux as Indre do reproduce faithfully on their website the updated information and do seem to be aware that a CoC is not needed for EU cars with the latest EC style V5
  3. Hmm! Frightening isn't it?

    Let me tell you my experiences of a 10x5 salt pool over the last nine years:

    Once the salt level is correct it needs very little topping up.

    Our pool has an 'abri', so I never drain it. I run the pump for 8 hours/day in the season and an hour in the winter. It needs a good vacuum in the spring, then I do it as decided by the number of insects that commit suicide - about every 3 weeks on average. If the top is open in the summer when it's dusty I need to clean more frequently as the dust settles as a fine powder.

    I have never used cyanuric acid, and adjust salinity by 'taste' - a bag per year as topping up dilutes the salt content, and I need to top-up about 1" per week.

    I must admit to never checking or rectifying the pH for 7 years! This resulted in a slightly green pool this spring, and on my friend's advice I checked pH and found it very alkaline. A good dose of pH minus soon did the trick so I bought a meter for 18 euros on Fleabay, and now check and regulate pH religiously!

    The electrode finally expired last autumn, and as it is a Monarch system I couldn't source a replacement [went bust a few years back] but I found a pattern replacement in the States for a fraction of the French price.

    The only other issue is keeping the water line clean.

    Leave unpruned for the moment and see if the new canes fruit in the autumn - If so, do this:

    Canes that fruited in the autumn just need the frosted tips trimmed in the spring. Once they have fruited for the second time in early summer, cut them down, leaving the new canes to fruit in the autumn
  5. My wife has difficulty walking unaided and has had a 4 wheel walker provided under the provisions of securité sociale. Eventually the tyres wore out on the gravel around the house, so I tried to get new wheels only to find that 4 wheels were dearer than a new walker! However, these walkers are really only suitable for use in the house or on level ground. As we have an extensive garden I looked for an alternative and found this:


    It's absolutely brilliant if you are active and want to walk on rough ground or need to climb steps and curbs.

  6. Well you did ...... sort of!

    You differentiated between summer raspberries and autumn raspberries, whereas I gave advice for summer raspberries, and the 'Remontant' varieties that fruit in the autumn on new canes, then AGAIN on the same canes the following summer.

    Yes, for the varieties that only fruit once in the autumn, your advice is correct.
  7. Here's what you do irrespective of the type of raspberry:

    As soon as the canes have finished fruiting in the summer, cut the old fruited canes down to the ground. Also cut out any weak new ones and thin the new canes if necessary.

    If they are a 'remontant' variety they will fruit now, then again next June on the same canes. In that case, in the early spring just nip off any dead bits on the tops of the canes. Cut them down after the second [June] fruiting.

    If the are conventional 'English' raspberries they won't fruit until next summer.
  8. Update: I spoke to the Orange English helpline. The guy there was busy trying to sell me a service including TV - I said I didn't want it, so he tried to sell me free internet with free phone via a phone linked to the computer. I persisted that I wanted unlimited Internet & unlimited landline calls as per the Optimale Internet described on their wesite, and he told me that as I was an existing customer he couldn't set it up. After a certain amount of choice Anglo-Saxon he suddenly discovered that he could set it all up for me - We'll see!
  9. Picking up on Sara's problems:

    Yes but.....It's not a French issue: You could have exactly the same problem anywhere in the world. with the other party denying liability.

    My tip, for driving anywhere in the world, is to ALWAYS have a camera in the car, even if it's only one of those funny little disposable ones. A picture speaks a thousand words, and I have found on a couple of occasions that a photo produced at an opportune moment has led to swift settlement of a claim. I'm surprised as Sara took photos that there's any dispute!

    But to be more specific, both Sara and the driver of the yellow vehicle on the 'wrong side of the road' should have filled in a 'Constat' there and then, and one then has the opportunity of seeing if porkies are being told and therefore summoning the Gendarmerie if need be.
  10. We live in a modernish [mid - seventies] house built with a half buried sous-sol. Construction is concrete block and render. I rather think it's hollow concrete block. However the outside walls let a lot of cold through in the winter, and heat in the summer.

    Does anyone know if there is an effective cavity wall insulation available in France?

  11. Probably flea beetle. Don't worry too much about it as the plants will grow away from it. You miight also find it on other brassicas, including radishes.
  12. Does anyone know the specific law to quote in these cases?


    I bought a couplke of sunbeds for the pool, one of which collapsed the first time it was used. Took it back with the receipt, and was told that I couldn't be reimbursed. I argued it was a manufacturing defect, but still no joy. " If it was broken when you took it out of the box m'sieu, we could reimburse you". Unbelievable!
