1. Belkin router set up -: Please,  Is your IP address 192.168.2.1/ ? What on your  Default gateway and DNS address all the same as IP address[8-)]?.  at present I have 10.0.0.138 on both of these but examples on internet show all these having same as IP address. Then again I read that I should change my IP address to 192.168.1.1[8-)] Before I stupidly went and swopped to XP (hoping to sort some issues ) all was working perfectly. I am now back with Vista but I get local connection but not internet connection. I can get on internet through Belkin router using the tower but the laptop wont pick up the wireless. Would love to have last few weeks on internet before condemned laptop goes back to UK - I wander off subject , but just to say re my big problem with buble gum laptop Dell, is still there anf I  have had one reply from PC World saying they might be the seller but its Dell that has the responsibility, so a friend spoke to UK Dell on my behalf they have checked tag details showing all problems over last 7 months they now say it will have to go back to Dell UK via daughter! they will collect only from UK address and if they cant fix it they will replace it - and here's me thinking we were in Europe![Www]
2. Thanks again but I did find him with a copy past  "Petit teckel de 1 an" in search on the actual page. Where theres a will ,there's a away .[:D] also I have spoken again with the lady and here desire is " a little dog of max 5 kilo" so she can take him every where she goes , including on the plane.! Milkey
3. Now I am really confused. We are Self Catering and are open only 5 months of the year , always declared gite income on form No/ 2042 CK in revenus  C1 Regime micro Enterprise  = vente de marchandise ou locations meublees non professionnelles in block that says NO ........    always below 5,000 Euro's  as its only for 2 people. It says on 2007 tax form asessed Bic non prof regime micro. Questions- Have we done everything correctly or should we be under another header as it is not our main income as we draw pension? We pay social charges on unearned income. Will we be being charged on gite income as well  I suppose is that normal? We dont have a sarlet number nor are we registerd with anyone (only by tax). Do we need to go to tax office and change to Gite rural so we dont lose our abattement of I think 71%  ( its going down to 50%) .? Someone has pointed out Bic non Proff should not be written on our tax form!!  Totally confused with this standard letter that has gone out asking do we want to change regime. Milkey[8-)]
4. Thank you I will pass this on , it appears though I think that the dog indeed needs to be small not more than 5 kilo so she can take him on the plane to her visits to her old home in Belgium. A very big thank you [:D]to Christine Animal for all information and phone numbers that I have also passed on . After my phone call to Phoenix it will surfice to say how dissapointed I was with lack of interest and help from them. Forum rules fortunetly forbid me to say more. Milkey.
5. Thanks for reply Alan- we are in the Lot et Garonne this is one of the areas classed as a disaster area I am 99% sure and our Insurance company is Generali. If I could find something in writing that says its 100% would be brill.Milkey
6. Confused as Usual. I had understood that because the storm  had been decreed a "disaster" by the Government the insurance company would pay 100% rather than deducting excess %. Just received cheque but minus excess. Had I understood wrongly about them paying 100% Milkey Thank you
7. Our friend  who is 70 years old  is heartboken as her little dog died a month ago she would love to replace him with another cant spell  this[8-)]chihuahua anyway, ! you get the idea! she has asked me to find one in the UK but surely someone must know of a French one - area 47 . She stresses she does not want a puppy. I thought I would phone phoenix tomorrow- any ideas , please. She has area totally fenced in , beautiful house the dog would be well looked after, treated her last one like a baby, .!Thankyou .Milkey.
8. I have just downloaded Zattoo and stupidly [+o(]put in France on "country option" so now I have some French progs to watch and now I am wondering if I had put UK in option box  would I have got BBC ITV etc. I dont seem to have any option to go back into and try these other settings. Has anyone tried the UK settings and got UK TV. Its streaming as if it has hiccups! on the old XP computer. Milkey
9. Thank you, to all . Working on letter and a few quotes from sales of goods act - groan [:(] Milkey
10. Ok sad I know, but I am answeing my own question in other post but it might help someone![:D] The disk that comes with a computer that is installed with Vista = Reinstallation  DVD  Windows Vista ,has a key code written within  the DVD that only the computer  that it came with recognizes. Silly me thought I had to get a keycode from Dell or that it was written on a tab somewhere.  So I now have Vista back. I am still battling with Dell over hardware problem - simply they cant fix it. So I now have a complaints number at PC World and e mail address where full sorry saga is being sent to them. !Milkey
11. Yes, big mistake XP. I have disks that came with laptop it says "Operating system" Windows Vista "Home Premium" 32 bit. If I take this back to fix it shop thats all I need to get Vista back- yes? ???? Also after having received this from Dell  ( thats after laptop having been back to Dell techies twice , with same problem as when it went!!)  ------ Afin de resoudre efficacement ce probleme je vous invite a prendre contact avec notre support Technique par telephone sur le : 09 69 39 00 30 qui pourrons acceder a votre ordinateur a distance et verifier ce qui se passe exactement. Je reste a votre disposition pour tout complement d information  The French computer shop will do this for me as I fear that moi who cant even comminicate at the bread shop even though I try so hard I end up doing charades - well ,I am not going to stand much of a chance speaking with Dell . Fingers crossed that is the Vista Disk - yes???? Do I wish a tree had fallen on laptop in the storm!! Yes!![:D]
12. Yep, not only a useless slab but its bubble gum pink to boot![:D] pehaps having XP  pro was a mistake, Vista's graphics were brill,  but hey ho .Milkey. How u diddlin Sunday Driver?[;-)]
13. Bought June 4th 2008 . At PC World Exeter. As advised by UK Dell at start of problems I had to re register it with Dell France. [:(]
14. Clarksinfrance , please find email I sent.  Laptop will go back to Dell for third time . Independant company has checked all and confirms in writing for me  that there must be a break in the cable as fault can be forced by moving the lid , I have told Dell in all e mails that this happens so I am hoping they will take notice now we have had it independantly tested!!! (not a connection fault as thats been checked). Can you believe it that when I asked (before info from Clarksinfrance on drivers) Dell for help as regards drivers they sent me to the autosupport , I filled in problem report and the only reply I got from them was to fill in a survey on how good they were or not, in fact they have sent 2 requests but no flippin reply to my help query. Whilst at independant company they advised me to put XP on instead of Vista  as I would have less issues in the future - trouble is now the wireless automatic searcher on laptop cant find the wireless signal. Should it make any difference now its on XP rather than Vista?Groan [:(]
15. Hello Clarkinfrance, this is very kind of you. Inspiron 1720 Hell oops Dell!!.Yes, the tiny hole is all there as before but  "I can only presume its the software that they have failed to put in because what was there once before was "Stigma Tel" now  missing and also microphone window that should show options on choice of line in or internal microphone only shows icon of line in . Not only but also any attempt to activate webcam shuts down the whole computer with a blue screen white writing that says an error has occured etc etc and to safe guard the computer from damage it is shutting down, which it does and then re starts. I have gone to the diagnostics in vista and it states the error number and loads of bumf  = Compatability issue between this version of windows & your wireless network card which was created ny Dell Inc. Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN mini card. Could not find driver. Windows detected new device no driver found. PCI\VEN_ 14E4&DEV_4315&SUBSYS_000B1028&REV_01 Problem signature - Event name PnP Driver not found. Architecture  -by 86 Bucket ID 78000567 Am I right in thinking once the driver is in it will also activate the microphone and of course the webcam. I feel that whoever does repairs for Dell must have fibbed about a prolongued test cos its not active to flippin well test. Dell have been good at replying to all emails and collecting laptop as its under warranty (not had it 12 months) . Have I a right to ask for replacement do you think? Webcam from day one was sensetive to movement but to be honest I thought that was normal but it just kept going from bad to worse .Thanks again. Milkey
16. Flippin heck!!! **** Dell, I spend 2 days re doing all anti virus etc etc before I check if webcam and microphone problems are fixed. This is the 2nd new intergrated webcam/ microphone that has been replaced - well, so the service sheet says - it also says it has had prolonged check. Horror, yes the webcam is working but they forgot to put back microphone it just does nor exist. Stigma Tel was the microphone software before. I have 100% checked all related places where I used to see microphone/ recording changes - all that exists now is "Line in", so do you think they have put a webcam in that simply does not have a microphone or they have just forgotten to install the software. Either way they have lied when they say they have given it a test cos if there is no microphone they cant have tested it . Looking up stigma Tel on google it seems there are issues with Service pack1 and all audio related bits- would anyone advise removing service pack1 which of course I installed because laptop was empty. I am so fed up. Milkey .Thanks in advance.
17. Wow, thank you Clarksinfrance. We are in 47. I must admit to feeling a bit pleased at having got so far (with everyones help) in putting things on laptop. I feel like its brand new again and if I can do this once it will give me confidence in case I should have to clear system. Daft thing cos it was only bought in June 2008 at PC World still under warranty , the faults are all hardware - intergrated webcam, microphone and USB ports , Dell France have been wonderful in there collection of it twice . I also have the tower (6 years old) a Dell sadly I would not buy another Dell. When I bought the troublesome laptop in UK a computer friend (computers are his main buisness not a hobby!!) loaded all for me as an early Christmas present , hence why I have not a clue as to what to do !!! The laptop was supposed to be a backup for when tower dies of old age!!!! This forum is brill- the best-thankyou. [:D]
18. Thank you everyone especially about the free "Office " . I will also follow -Protecting your computer "sticky" (above by Will), found this great site http://c4lpt.co.uk/Directory/ .  Has anyone used "Acronis". I had understood this was the best thing since sliced bread for copying/ cloning the software that is inside computer should you need to recover all lost data.? [:D]Milkey
19. Well not quite , Vista is still there !. Yet again Dell has tried to fix nearly new laptop ,last time they did not empty hard drive , this time apart from Vista home premium all has gone, please could someone be kind enough to write me (and others) a check list to load . Am I on the right track that I should be loading -freebies , antivirus, anti spam, anti malware , windows defender , Firewall is on. A Defragger??? Anything else can u think. Is there a good free prog like photo suite u could recommend ,please. What I cant get my head around is -yes, before it went I saved on a thumb drive all my word 2007 documents then deleated all documents and emptied  bin on the laptop. Now because Office Word 2007 programme has gone, (and all other software like photo suite -sigh!) will it still open my saved documents of word on my thumb drive.? Sadly I cant re load Office Word 2007 as I do not have the software ( long story but all my software went back to UK and was lost).  I have Office Word on my XP Tower, so I can get access there . I am awaiting arrival of Accronis software- would I be able to cloan Office from the tower using accronis? then load onto laptop?[8-)] Not a happy bunny, fraught could be a good word[:-))] Milkey
20. A French lady was very distressed after having read the particular information that I was sent re - English people offering their numerous  services at a price, ranging from tree felling to teaching people to play a musical instrument. The particular advert read of a man offering to teach piano lessons to adults or children this  is what brought on her genuine distress  - as I understood - I ask to be corrected here- she said, that under no circumstances without proper "vetting" would the man be allowed to teach children , (of course I would presume he needs special diplomas of music anyway) also what worried me was ( if I had understood) she insisted that whoever was responsible for the information being sent out in the first place would also face a severe prosecution/penalty should it ever be proven (aiding and abbeting I suppose!)that  a child might  have been interfered with. She went on to say that heavier penalties were being introduced and much stricter regulations and code to follow. Please, has anyone more information on this with for eg : a link to rules referring to working with children ( I would presume its as strict as with the UK) - I have passed verbally the conversation I have had but would like to pass on the more factual info, as the free newsletter that many English  receive in this area is done with the best of intent. Yes, I am also wondering if a lot of the adverts are people just earing a bit on the side, which of course would have its own consequences. A link from someone would be much appreciated- thank you .My French or lack of it prohibits a good govermental search- sorry. Milkey.  Edited - to read - "a proper check on his his history/ background" rather than vetting!![:$] and Where to find rules??
21. Cutting our own logs means we save all the sawdust, brilliant because we use the sawdust to pack into the fire if we are going out for a few hrs or should we leave it in overnight simmering! It must be packed tight.[:D] We  buy arcatia not the top of the reccomendation list simply because it spits but as long as its not on an open fire  no problem and much cheaper than oak , we also use poplar's ( all dried for 2 years) burns very hot but burns a little bit quick! So dont be pushed into buying oak - its so expensive!
22. Wow, all went well, French Fred e mailed Dell at 10.30 .Whilst he was still at my desktop (having a groan that I should be on the new wimax that is in our area to speed me up!!) Dell replied within 20 mins saying they will send TNT to come and collect . What was funny is that Dell received the email they wanted in French describing all fixes that have been carried out etc, their reply was in English which really puzzled French Fred, the English had been translated to read that the laptop would be kidnapped within 2 days and returned  or replaced within 6 working days- how good is that! True to their word TNT collected it brought their own box and sponge  to put it in ( had to unpack it from my box!) got receipt .  [:D]The bad news is I originally spoke to UK Dell who told me to phone another Dell UK number , I did and got put on hold 20 mins later I put phone down and e mailed instead . Today  just got phone bill that shows that particular call cost us 49 Euro . *ugger.
23. Come November every year we close up the North side of the house which is utility room and  spare guest rooms that are single glazed and insert sheets of polystirene (spelling[8-)] between closed shutters and glass. We get no condensation whatsoever.[:D]
24.
MBK, I was reading a related article in the Grauniad some weeks ago.  I confess that hedge funds are a bit of a mystery to me yet they do seem to influence the world economy far more than is healthy.  These are the times when I really miss Gluey who used to explain such things really well. But the tail really does appear to be wagging the dog now and high stakes gamblers (which is truly all these people are) are milking the common man, who's just trying to keep his head above water, for all he is worth.
I agree 100%  , based offshore and are virtually unregulated.   I digress - but perhaps this is a start of closing the doors - recently read somewhere (sorry cant remember where) " Could UK offer options for expat banking. "  Interesting read Times Online 11th December 2008     The article uses the words 'tax haven' and 'Isle of Man' from the outset. A tax to fund a deposit protection scheme? It sounds nice but isn't all this a move to level the playing field for investment right across the board. Once you start reducing the element of risk then investment management starts to become pointless and holding back some interest at source is going to turn people away from the offshores, which is obviously the intention. So, the UK Government will be appearing to help offshore investors and in the same breath deter them from investing with the likes of IoM. I think all this is going to get very, very messy.
