  1. We broke down on an autoroute our way home this year and phoned our breakdown company to be told that only the police had the authority to deal with breakdowns on a motorway and that we had to walk to the nearest services or ring them from one of the phones by the roadside.  Once we had done that we could then phone our breakdown company back.  Although, as we were stood by the van a man stopped in a road works truck and we asked him if he would phone the police he said yes and went back to his truck.  A breakdown truck then turned up and we phoned our breakdown company back, he spoke to the man in French and then said that it was OK to fix the van.  I'm sure if you phone your breakdown company before you go then they will tell you what you have to do, and on which roads.  Hope this helps.
  2. I did the same thing with BMI.  As soon as I realised I phoned them and they just changed it on their system.  I didn't need another ticket, just my reference number, and I didnt have to pay anything.  No problems at check-in either.
  3. We have a phone on contract with O2 and when we come over to France we subscribe to O2 My Europe Extra.  It costs £10 per month and you can just subscribe for a month at a time.  All incoming calls are free and outgoings calls are 25p per minute. We send a text to people and ask them to phone us back, it just costs them the same as a normal phone call.  Details are on the O2 website.
  4. We are in the process of renovating a barn and have bought 'How to Renovate a House in France' by David Ackers, Jerome Aumont, and Paul Carslake. we also bought 'Concese Dictionary of House Building terms' by Hadley Pager.  We find both of these very usefull, hope you do. Mark
  5. Hi We have a wooden floor in England.  When it was first fitted about 6 years ago we used something called Junkers Strong Matt finnish, (I think it comes in silk as well)  We sanded the floor down and applied before going to bed and left to dry overnight.  The next morning the flloor was dry and  we gave it a light sanding and applied another coat that night.  I think we gave it 3 coats altogether.  The more coats the beter.  Eventhough we have a dog the floor still looks like new. We bought the Junkers from HSS when we hired the sander.  The phone number for Junkers is 01376 534700. Hope this helps Mark

  7. Hi Just seen your post on the builders merchant near Chalais. We have just bought an old barn in Courgeac and are coming over for the first time next week.  Is this the nearest builders merchants do you know, and what's their English like, as our Frecnch isn't up to much yet.  Also do you know where we could hire a mini digger from? Thanks Any help appreciated.
  8. Could anyone tell me the best place to hire a mini digger in the Chalais area and rough prices if possible.  I did email someone and he charged £200 per day to come with the digger and do the work himself is the an average price? Also where is the best place to buy gravel and sand in that area. Any help would be appreciated
