1. Chancer, you're not the only one who finds posts with few or no paragraph and sentence breaks incredibly difficult to read.  I'm very short-sighted and though my specs correct well, focussing on a big block of text is very tiring. Spelling mistakes don't bother me, but I find lack of punctuation much harder to cope with.
2. Quillan, I think the letter quotes by Swissie is meant to be ironic. [:)] Nice one, Swissie. [:D]
3. Grapefruit is also not a good idea for women who have had post-menopausal hormone-receptive breast cancer as it increases oestrogen levels in the body. I wish I'd known that years ago, as I had breast cancer in 1998 and ate grapefruit every day at breakfast for years. Perhaps I might have avoided a recurrence in 2005 without it.
4. Well, the law says that the polling station doors must be locked at 10pm and only those who have already been issued with a ballot paper are allowed to vote. I'm not saying I agree with this rigidity, but it is the law and has been for many years. It may be that the Electoral Commission review will recommend changes in the law for next time round.
5. I read both when I followed the link, thanks, Sweet.  Will keep an eye out for updates.
6. I for one am very glad you posted the link, Sweet. Very moving, courageous and thought-provoking wrting and I will be going to bed counting my blessings tonight.
7. According to this website http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/how_do_i_vote/voting_by_post.aspx  postal ballot papers aren't sent out until about a week before the election. We've registered for a postal vote and nothing has arrived yet and we're in the UK. It will mean getting the form back in the post the day it arrives to be sure it gets back in time.
8. We are in a quite different situation from you (retired, second-home owners) but I know that realistically you will not make anywhere near enough enough from a single gite to keep a family on.  Think gite conmplex with several properties or a good-sized B&B in a popular area, and even many of these are struggling at the moment with the economic downturn and subsequent drop in bookings. A really useful place to look for information from people in the business is : http://www.laymyhat.com/forum/
9. But if the noise is as bad as described, who would want to buy? It sounds as though it would be difficult to schedule viewings when the radio was off. [:(]
10. I really do doubt whether they could or would have been relocated abroad. How could they have been monitored in those circumstances?  Australia stopped being the dumping-ground for British criminals a very long time ago.
11. Well, I hope you're right, Frenchie. [:)]  The house which is now our second home lost its entire roof in the grande tempete of 1999, so it's worrying to be several hundred miles away and not able to see what's happening.  It's going to be quite rough here too, but nothing like as bad as further south. Fingers crossed for all of you in France.
12.
Bugs, refuse to be offended because I do believe that Norman says things just to be provocative. The UK is way out of line with other countries and it's clearly a nonsense to offer health care to all who are declared "resident". Stupid, stupid, stupid and irresponsible to their permanent residents. De-select the lot of them, but how would that work?  They all seem to be totally enamoured of the NHS!
Are you doing a Norman here, Sweet? [;-)] Not your usual kind of sensible comment. [:)] As someone living in the UK and likely to go on doing so, I'm with Will and Coops on being deeply proud of the only truly universal health care system in the world and would never NEVER vote for anyone who advocated changing that. If someone has been declared resident, they are resident.  Permanence has nothing to do with it . After all you would have been considered a permanent resident before you came to France.  [:D]
13. Why do they need lower taxes, Wooly?  If he earns a million a year and pay tax at 50% (the highest rate) he's still left with just over half a million a year to live on.  Poor guy! [;-)] I'm a pensioner and still pay some tax on my very modest pension, though only at 20%. Lucky me! [:)] I'll swop with him any day. [:D]
14. My DiL told me recently that in her 6 year-old's school class in North Oxford the largest number of non-British children are French. [:D] I've certainly heard parents speaking French at the school gates when taking or collecting our grandson. And the last time I had my hair done in Oxford the hairdresser was French and she told me there is a large French community in the city. The UK can't be al bad, can it? [;-)]
15. http://www.leboncoin.fr/ A bit like a cross between Ebay and the classified ads in your local paper. [:D]  The beauty is that you can search for items/property etc. in your own area and prices are often very reasonable.
16. Just followed your link and it's working fine now, PPP.  Must have been a temporary glitch.
17. I would still hazard a guess that it's a minority of all Muslim women in Britain and probably a small one.  It's just that burkas do stand out, so you notice them. The burka isn't universal wear in all Muslim countries by any means, and the same is true among Muslims in Western Europe.  I repeat, I can't see what all the fuss is about.
18. Full-face.  Most photo booths have a curtain, so no problem about being seen in public. If you need an interview for a passport, you have to have your face uncovered.  Reason I know all this?  I've just renewed my passport and it's all in the explanatory leaflet. [:)] I'm guessing that when you get to passport control, there will be a procedure for the check to be done in private. Not quite sure what all the fuss is about. Only a small minority of Muslim women in the West go about with their faces veiled.  To be honest I'd rather that than to have to see a lot of people (and not only women) going about with their skimpy clothing revealing what would be much better left covered. [:D]
19. Not only that, but there seems to be considerable doubt whether they ever will.  Recommending and achieving are not synonymous. [:)]
20. In a word, No, because, as Coeur de Lion says, many so-called news items are simply regurgitated press releases in the first place. Thankfully, as I'm retired, access to lots of news doesn't feature too highly in my list of priorities, so the BBC website (which I've already paid for via my TV licence) is fine for me.
21. Boo, hiss! Bang goes any excitement on election night, then............
22. Lovely to hear from you, Mooky, and know that things are going well for you. [:D] I'd wondered how you were getting on and am glad you're enjoying life. Long may it continue.
I was rather sickened by one bit of news presentation which was with regards to people being saved from the collapsed buildings. It seems the French were the first to save somebody and the UK second. I thought the 'race' was just against time and saving people not an Olympic Sport  event to see which country can save a person first. It is often said that disasters bring out the best in people but it can also bring out the worst.
And it's so untrue, Quillan.  The great majority of those rescued from the ruins have been saved by fellow Haitians digging with their bare hands.
24. Well, a fair bit of the 'fees' are tax and the work involved in transferring and registering an acre of land is probably the same as doing it for hundreds of hectares. [:)]
25.

Gengulphus what is a STEEL bakestone?
Well, it is a round piece of very heavy gauge steel  -  pizza-size, say  -  and usually with a handle or two.  I picked one up in a flea market a couple of months ago.  If you do a google image search you will see more examples than you can shake a stick at.
Sounds like what I would call a griddle and use for making Welsh cakes or Scotch pancakes.
