1.
Turn south at Calais down to Rouen,go round the Rouen ringroad to the Paris autoroute, drive a few miles on this towards Paris ,then get on the A154(Chartres,Dreux,Orleans),this becomes the N154 and if you follow the signs to Orleans will get you on the Autoroute to Clermont-Ferrand and the South.
Hi nannyb, I'll second jc's suggested route - we live in Castelnaudary (about an hour short of Perpignan on the autoroute) and have always used this route successfully and it's reasonably stress-free [:D].   Bonne chance! PS  it usually takes us approx 10 hours for the journey, including a couple of short comfort breaks/lunch en route
2. Hi I don't have any experience with the kennels side of things but I'm in the process of setting up a cattery here.  I've had my local veterinary practice come to inspect our premises and set-up, and they put me on to the local DSV (Directoire des Services Veterinaires) for the official side of things.  I 'phoned the DSV and explained that I wanted to set up the cattery, and they sent me a mass of legal requirements/documents relating to setting up a variety of animal-related businesses (pensions, refuges, elevages, etc) and a form to complete and send to them.  I've filled in the form and sent it back to them, and am now waiting for them to let me know what happens next.  Until I get their authorization, I can't get my SIRET number from the Chambre de Commerce. Good luck with your venture. Sharon
3.
I know that it's a bit of a trek to the Aude, but were you aware that Jet2 are going to operate Edi - Avignon?  Sats only, mid-June - end-Aug.
Thanks - I hadn't heard about this one.  I think we're a wee bit closer to Girona Airport which flies directly to Glasgow Prestwick, but will keep hoping for a direct Carcassonne/Scotland flight [8-|]
4. Sorry to break up this lovefest.  [;-)] I haven't heard this rumour about Bristol to Carcassonne - last year I heard that one of Ryanair's plans was for Edinburgh to Carcassonne and, as there are no flights yet from Scotland here, I'm really hoping that my rumour's truer than your rumour [:P][:D]
5. Hi, good luck with your move.  We moved to the Aude (mid-way between Toulouse and Carcassonne) almost years ago with our 3 cats - the only real difference we've noticed since we've come here is that the cats suffer more from fleas (easily treatable with Frontline) and one of our cats (mostly white) has now lost an ear to skin cancer [:(] (we're using factor 50 suncream on his remaining ear now). [8-|]
6. I've had to nickname my OH 'Mr Faffy' - he just can't seem to go out to the car and go anywhere without coming back for: a) his glasses (the ones that are supposed to stay in the car but that mysteriously appear in the house every day 'cos he forgets to take them off before leaving the car) b) car keys (not every time, but often enough) c) wallet/driving licence (as above) c) mobile 'phone - he knows better than to go off without it but never remembers it until the last moment And, as far as working is concerned, I've been through all the 'have you seen my tape measure/chalk/spirit level/etc' so many times that I bought him a fabulous tool belt as part of his Christmas pressie.  It lay in the utility room until the end of January when I persuaded him to actually put some things in it and try it on - now it's hanging up in his workshop, still full of his bits'n'pieces, and he's away on a job today (probably wondering where the heck his x, y + z are)!    [8-)]
7. I've just found this pic I took of the wee . . . creatures last spring [before I realized quite how dangerous they are [:(]] - I couldn't get them all in the shot, but there must have been a couple of hundred anyway. . . . . . I'm getting the burner ready for them this year! [+o(]
8. Hi all Yes, he was out lying in the sun most of yesterday and lovin' it!  [:D]  He's a very sociable and active big cat - one of the most 'human' cats I've ever had.  He seems to think that whatever we do, he can do [eg, sitting at the dining table on any empty chair when we're eating as soon as someone goes to the kitchen for something].  Maybe he watches me sunbathing when I can and thinks he should do it too? [8-|] I've been looking around on the internet too for ideas, but think that the high-factor suncream is the best option - we'll just get into a routine of putting it on first thing every day and again after lunch.  At least I don't have to worry about getting a water-proof one as he's not a big fan of the pool. [;-)] Thanks for your support and advice - I'll let you know how we get on as the warm weather approaches . . .
9. Hi We've got a lovely 15-year old cat, Blobby, who loves to lie in the sun (even when it's really, really hot) - well, he didn't get much of a chance to do that when we lived in Scotland! Unfortunately, he loves it too much and developed skin cancer on one of his ears late last summer (he's mostly white with black blobs, hence his name). The vets tried to save his ear and removed part of it in the middle of October, but the cancer spread and they had to then remove the rest of his ear at the beginning of December. He's still got his hearing in both ears, and is coping with it very well (better than I did when he first came back from the vets - he looked dreadful) and we're managing to resist calling him 'b uggerlug' instead of 'b uggerlugs' when he's up to mischief. [:)] However, my serious question is, how do we stop him doing the same again this year and losing his other ear (or worse). He's already out there this afternoon, sprawled in the relatively weak February sun and I need to do something soon. I've tried putting suntan lotion on (not an easy task) and I don't think he'll appreciate a sun-hat of any kind. Does anyone have any suggestions, sensible or otherwise?   PS  I've also posted in the Animal Welfare forum without realizing that this was probably a more relevant forum, sorry[8-)]

11. Hi all, we seem to have a lot of these cocoons in our pine trees and we've chopped down and burned all the ones we can reach.  Between mid-December and late January, we were finding lots of processions of caterpillars during the daytime (anything from half-a-dozen to around 100) and got rid of them too - either the PPC stomp (not me, I tried it but can't bear the (probably imagined) squelch and feel of it, even through heavy shoes) or the short car drive around the tarmacked area where we tend to find them.  I really hate doing this as, despite how damaging they are, they're fascinating to see in action, but we've got curious cats and lots of pine trees - not a good combination! Question 1: is there a better/kinder way to kill them when we find them on the ground?  Last year, before we had realized quite how dangerous they are, we found a procession of around 300 of them in mid-March and I just swept them all into the ditch around the garden - won't be doing that again!  Question 2: after very heavy rain early last week, we then had a couple of days of warm sunshine and our biggest pine tree (around 10 m high, with loads of cocoons high up in it) started making 'snap, crackle and popping' sounds in the afternoon.  It was really quite spooky and I'm sure it must have been to do with the chenilles (possibly the cocoons drying out?).  We've not seen any signs of them on the ground yet but, following more rain this weekend, and a glorious day today, I'm expecting to hear the tree again soon.  Any ideas what the noise could be? I'm getting quite obsessed with this, and would appreciate any suggestions, thanks.
12. Ditto, isn't it lovely to have a 'good ending' story to start the week?  And the sun's shining - what more could you ask for on a Monday morning? Bonne chance Maggi + Mike (+ Trevor, of course)
13. Hi Yorky Sorry, we don't have the facilities here for dogs although I've been asked the same thing by other folks.  We hope to make a go of the cattery first of all and, if it's successful, we may look longer-term at building additional facilities for dogs.
14. Hi Catherine I know it's probably 7 months too late [:(] for your request but thought I'd let you know that I've set one up on the outskirts of Castelnaudary and am in the process of having it registered. If you're interested in visiting it to check if you could use it in the future, please e-mail me and I'll tell you more about us and give you directions. Regards,
