  1. Andrew Yes you are right - Wollongong boy but have lived in the UK for about 20yrs but about to shift to our place we have been renovating for 3 yrs in the Lot. This started as a search for water for irrigation but a 80m dry hole started me thinking about what to do with it. I had been thinking about adding solar for the pool to extend the season but decided to leave it until I had finished the house and moved down (next year). The existing pool (10m x 5m) is lined and about 25 yrs old. Just to heat the existing pool, what range of cost am I looking at ? I was thinking cheap & cheerful plastic tube arrays but I know you are a fan of high efficiency evacuated glass tubes? Is there a problem with dumping heat load in hot conditions with the latter? Best Regards OzPete
  2. Thanks for the advice - I have connected with a suggested geothermal outfit in the UK who calculated that with my borehole & connecting horizontals to a heat pump, we would get 4 tons or 14kW of heat. Not being a thermodynamics wiz I am wondering if this is enough heat to make a difference -ie what influence on a 75m3 pool will 14kW have under say conditions where daytime ambiant is 20 deg, (night-time ambient 10 deg) target temp is 25 deg but water temp is 15 deg and assuming a decent insulative floating cover? I remember reading some posts a few years back where it was recommended that evacuated tube solar is a better bet than a heat pump - would this still be the case if the cost of the borehole is deducted ? Thanks for any insights. OzPete
  3. I am wanting to install geothermal heating pipe in an unsuccessful water borehole (80m) to possibly use as geothermal heating for my pool (75m3). Does anyone know what length of HDPE pipe will be needed to heat this volume of water to 25 degrees say from May to October? Thanks OzPete
  4. Many thanks for the response. I liked my home country solution Poolguy ! Peter
  5. Can anyone suggest suppliers of 20m3 - 30m3 plastic underground rainwater storage tanks? Located in the Lot. Peter

  8. We live on the Lot/Dordogne border and want to seed a large area under lawn . Can anyone recommend what type of grass seed we should use for year round green grass using irrigation from our local well .Any suggestions on available high end/commercial automayed sprinkler systems in France ? OzPete
  9. The orange stuff you want is made by Schluter ( German) and sold throughout Europe (Big Mat in France & Point P) . The have floor & wall liners (which can be tiled over )and interlocking drains . See http://www.schluter.com/ Good luck
  10. Nick I think I agree - I read on the web that the manuf. of Tri-Iso Super 9 has admitted its real R value is around 1.7 not 5 as claimed (200mm glass wool equivalent)-see www.celotex.co.uk. Have you used YBS Super Quilt or is it the same as Tri Iso ?
  11. Hi I followed a string recently on Tri-Iso Super 9 vs expanded poly- styrene (EPS)foam . I subsequently read that in the UK they have determined that Tri-Iso 9 is not as good as good an insulator as 200mm of mineral glass wool (claimed to equivalent by manufacturers). Can anyone give me a comparison of Tri-Iso Super 9 with the 10cm thick blue EPS(I think ?) foam ? Also can anyone provide the cost comparisons of Tri-Iso/Blue EPS per m2 ? Finally I discovered that you can buy Tri-Iso Super 10 in the UK (replaced Surer 9)which has additional layers and hence better insulation . Is it available in France any idea of the price & experience? Many thanks for any help. I want to use it in a large tiled attic between battens and plasterboard .
  12. Many thanks - I have to believe they are available !
  13. Hi I am renovating & extending a large house and want to replace all the windows and doors with Bois/Alu mixte windows . I am looking for a major supplier who can make double vitrage units with low E glass and importantly can make the fenestration (window bars) as close to the originals as possible . I have found an American outfit that can do the Alu outside/bois inside petit bois with a black spacer in the glass which looks great ( Marvin ) but I am interested in French manufacturers . We have about 30 windows/doors all up so a small menusiere won't get me there . I am in the Lot but anywhere in the country would be fine . Any suggestions ?
  14. Kira I assume from your response that for short periods ( less than 6 mths & in my case 3 weeks) that a fully registered/insured italian contractor is allowed to work in France ? I have been told by 2 different Brit builders I met that if challenged by the gendarmes they only need to prove they are registered/insured in the EU country of origin to carry out short term work in France . This seems consistent with the recently agreed EU trans-nation working initiative . Do you agree? Ozpete
  15. Hi All   I have owned a house in the SW for the last 3 years and I am in the process of a major renovation . I am owner/building using subs. and have obtained devis from local artisans for most everything, and had good experiences  so far with architect / terrassement/fosse etc. However finding a macon has been a challenge - we have identified/approached 10 macons over 6mths but only received 2 devis ; one 50% higher than the other ! The later macon cannot start for 9 mths. My project has some minor structural concrete work in the renovation portion with most of the maconniere in an extension . We have signed a devi with the macon for the extension works and are happy to wait , but we need to get the small amount of structural concrete work done on the renovation done so that other local artisans can get cracking & finished hopefully by summer . In desperation I have identified a specialist concrete contractor (known to me) from Italy who can do the work in 3 weeks. He runs a fully registered company in Italy paying all taxes/social charges and is fully insured including 10yr workmanship guarantee under Italian law .I am prepared to accept the liability arising out of the structural integrity issues as the house is on rock and I have retained a local structural engineer to specify the reinforcement steel. I do not intend to sell the house in the next 10 yrs. My question is can I use the Italian contractor in France for such a limited /specialist task and if so what do I need to do to ensure it is legitimate ?
