  1. Yes I 'did bear witness'. Sounded like 'a train doing through the house' rather than the often rolling motion.  I've been in a 'big one' in California and many people died. Not funny.  On a lighter note the earth didn't move for me this morning!  Why do you think we're due for a big one?
  2. Yes - an earthquake here at Fontenay le Comte.  4.2 mag. http://www.franceseisme.fr/donnees/intensites/details_seisme.php?IdSei=323
  3. Although I spoke reasonable French, the Notaire was under an obligation to make sure that I understood everything of the transaction (Acte de Vente) and so appointed a translator (at my expense). I probably could have managed by myself but I think he wanted to make sure there was no comeback on him. Cost me 50 euros. Depends how complicated the purchase is.
  4. Looking at www.meteox.fr and waiting in the South Vendee to see if we're going to escape.  Told the guests in the gite there might be a storm and gave them torches and candles.  Watered the garden this evening just in case it passed us by so it's bound to rain now!  Click on your region to see in more detail.
  5. How old are the children? My school age grandchildren in the UK are between 5 and 10yrs old but even one who is 3 is keen to speak a few French phrases.  I've explained how children and adults greet each other, some of the differences between French and UK eating habits, different landscapes etc.  As has been pointed out it is a big country! If they are older you could look up the tourist offices of the different departments - or get the students to! Good luck.  Hope it's a start but keep asking more specific questions and I'm sure someone will help.  I had a teacher (I'm assuming you're a teacher!) like you and she started my interest in France.  Look where it got me - living in France in my old age! PS  Sorry - I'm not French
  6. Had an email re promo. This is only for a 'day' trip but I've just booked St Malo to Portsmouth return 24th/25th Jan with my car (1 person) plus so called inclined seat - both night crossings - for 50 euros return. I leave 22.00 St Malo 24 Jan and return 25Jan 20.30 (on Pont Aven) so have a full day to have Sunday birthday lunch/dinner with my family, getting back home midday Monday. Appreciate this is only a good deal if you are on your own and are within sensible travelling distances both sides of the crossing.
  7. From UK  01752 227941 From France  0044 1752 227941 Ask for the department you need or tell them the query you have and they will put you through to the right person.
  8. Just in case anyone here has an account with the above bank there is a very good support/action website to keep everyone up to date. Hopefully no-one has a huge amount of money with them! www.ksfiomdepositors.com
  9. I was told that it will be today or tomorrow (Wed/Thurs) when I enquired last week.  Nothing so far!
  10. Right - I'm off to buy a football tomorrow!  I have so many molehills that it takes longer to scoop them up into the wheelbarrow (to go onto the veg garden) than mow. (I have about half an acre of lawn)  Last year I had a few but this year, as I sit in the garden, they pop their heads up and wave as I'm watching!  What with slugs, rabbits and birds eating my veg I feel I'm fighting a losing battle this year.  It's worth a try and if nothing else it'll amuse the neighbours!  Why don't they go onto their gardens - I mow at least once a week which should be quite disturbing for them but no - they like my grass better. 11. Thanks for the suggestions. I did type 0 rather than O - wouldn't have been the first time that I'd made that mistake! I even tried various amounts on my copy of the last tax form but still couldn't get in. Oh well - Monday morning over to the tax office.  They were very helpful last year as my declaration wasn't that straightforward.  In fact the person I saw filled it all in for me so I thought it would be easy this year as I knew which bits went in each box.  I just really wanted to do it on line to get the 20 euro deduction!!
  12. Hi I received my tax forms in the post and because it's my second tax return I thought I'd do it online this time.  However, I'm having a problem registering.  It asks for your No. Fiscal, No. Teledeclarant and your RFR which they say is on your 2007 Taxe Habitation.  I have no problem with the Fiscal or Teledeclarant but because my RFR is 0 it doesn't like it.  Before I trudge off to the Centre des Impots has any one any suggestions as to where I might find out why this is happening or maybe how to work out what it might be.  It was probably 0 because my first tax return was only for the last couple of months of the tax year. I e-mailed the help line but even though I explained the problem I got a standard reply telling me where to find the RFR! I did search the forum but it doesn't seem that anyone else has had this problem. Thanks
  13. Hi   You could also try animaloo.fr They have some on promo at the moment.
  14. Me again! Having still had problems with Neuf disconnecting I found that whenever I try to access Neuf's new Meteo site (from their home site under 'pratique') my Neuf box cuts out immediately.  It came back later but I'm wondering if this is something to do with my disconnection problems.  This site connects to a video.  I haven't tried calling the help line as I  have found them useless.  Looking at the justneuf website it seems there are many dissatisfied customers. Anyone else having a problem with Neuf?
  15. Forgot to say that to email Neuf I have to drive to the nearest internet cafe!
  16. Hi I've been having trouble with Neuf for months and months.  Lost it again all day Friday and Sat.  Same as you - the telephone line cuts out and so no internet - nothing. My heart sinks when I see the tel light out on the Neuf box. Also get the 'engaged' tone.  I have to use my mobile to speak to the help desk who then disregard my statement that there no telephone working.  Nothing gets resolved.  I've e-mailed them several times complaining and wonder of wonders the line comes back on!  Could be a coincidence I suppose.  It hasn't been too bad this month - only been off a few times.  Could it be weather related as it's now raining hard here? I'm so fed up being cut off that I'm considering going back to France Telecom - at least I can go to the shop and complain in person!
  17. I've also had problems with Neuf  - sometimes over a week without a telephone and thus no internet connection.  The 'help line' each time goes through the usual 'which lights are flashing etc' by which time my mobile has packed up due to bad signal in this area. I'd like to change as I've just bought a house/gite and need a reliable telephone line but it looks like I have to accept that ISPs in France are not that reliable.  Any thoughts/advice?
  18. Brian Problem solved! I should have turned the gas taps inside the house a few more times.  I just did it the once and it wasn't enough. I too thought that it might have been something to do with the cold weather - anyway will soon be cosy and warm. Cal
  19. Hi I had delivery of propane yesterday. The tank was empty and the driver told me to wait about half and hour and then turn the red knob on the tank on (he showed me which one).  I did this but still no gas coming through.  Is there a problem or does it usually take a long time? I thought I'd ask here before I rang them.
  20. Hi I'm moving to France at the end of June and am in a very similar situation to Sandra - I'll be 60 in January and female.  Also moving to the Vendee.  The last time I was there (last month) I heard of another lady of similar age who had done it on her own.  Even though I have children and grandchildren in the UK I have always wanted to live in France.  I've spent quite a lot of time there starting as an au pair aged 17! I don't want to reach my 80s and regret I hadn't done it. I'm now in a position to make the move and even though my friends think I'm either mad or brave I can't wait.  All the stuff of registering my car, sorting out internet connection, etc is a challenge but with all the help of forums like this not too difficult. Do more ladies than men in this age group make the move on their own?
