The Weald & Downland is wonderful, isn't it! We used to visit right from its early days, when there were some fascinating guys reconstructing the old buildings. Can I second your recommendation?

You could try visiting and talking to the Ecocentre at St. Pierre de Frugie, just off the RN21between Chalus and La Coquille. They have several types of eco-construction in progress, and can probably provide useful contacts. If nothing else, you can have a very interesting tour of the site.

If you are anywhere near Chalus, try Troc Plaisir, Place de la Fontaine; Didier and Sandrine often have small woodburners in their showrooms. they both speak some English.
