  1. I must throw out at least 10 empty wine bottles a week. Does that mean I am turning French? Do you think that I should post this on the Medical page? Does anyone have the number for AA?
  2. I would think that you need to look a little closer at an area. There would have to be quite a few flies to cover the whole of the Dordogne, and how would they know when they reach the department boundary? I live in the Dordogne, about 12 miles north of St Cyprien but we have had very few flies. I live on a south facing wooded hillside, very isolated so could it be that the flies don't know that I am here? If you live next to a pig farm inthe UK you will get flies, I know as my sister does, but 3 miles up the road there are very few flies. If I visited my sister then should I discount east Anglia as it is full of flies? You could look at Brittany, but if there were a farm nearby there would be flies. You just can't win!
  3. I am also an amature historian, but love the Roman period. Living in this part of the Dordogne is not easy as the river Vezere is 5 miles away and that is covered in prehistorical sites. The French seem to promote these and forget the more modern Roman times. Having said that Perigueux has a fantastic Roman museum, called Versunna, the Roman name for the town, and it is well worth a visit. After my last visit I wandered in the direction of where I thought the ampitheater should be and sure enough I found the remains in a park, with no reference to what it was.
  4. I have used the metal rails on ceilings and walles. On ceilings the suspenders allow you to get a flat even plasterboard ceiling whe the rafters are not level. Not trying to teach anyone to suck eggs, but it goes like this: Fasten one hanger in the corner of a room. With a string and spirit level fasten another hanger in another corner on the same beam. Do this for all four corners. Once the corners are set and screwed to the beams, they should all be level. Then fasten the sting along one beam from hanger to hanger and at about 50 or 60 cm intervals fix more hangers.. Do the same on the beam at the opposite side of the room. When these two rows are in place you can use the string to fasten the hangers to every beam in between. You can then clip the railing onto the hangers. At this point mark the walls where the rails are so that you know where to fix the plasterboard to. Srew the plasterboard up using proper screws (come in different lengths) make sure that the countersink on the screw goes flush with the surface but does not break it by screwing too far in. You can then tape the joints and fill the screw heads and you should have a level ceiling. Don't forget to lay any cables for when the rails are attached but before the plasterboard goes on. If you have a heavy light to attach then put a one foot square of plywood above the plasterboard at that point to spread the load. If you are fitting to an area that may get damp, ie bathroom, then use the green plasterboard as it is moisture resistant. Hope this helps.
  5. Just picked a load today they were great. See my blog for more info and pictures.
  6. I am also with MAAF. They give us a discount on the bikes as we have insured the car with them. I found bike insurance much cheaper here than the UK anyway.
  7. In my opinion, the car would have to have been priced at about 30% of the price here in France to compensate for the hassle of driving a RHD car here. The 407 diesel is a very good car, but should you come to sell it here it will be worth nothing. What resident would ever buy a RHD car, but as you say you intend to drive it till it falls apart that is fine, that only means that you have about 15 years of driving a RHD on the right side of the road. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that you are doing the wrong thing, but I owned two LHD cars in the UK and hated them both after about 6 months, but there was nothing that I could do about it as they had no value on UK plates. I wish you the best of luck.
  8. Not exactly the same area that you are looking, but I live in the Dordogne 20 miles south of Perigueux. Rather than go into the weather here, you may be interested in my blog.
  9. Is this still happening? Or are we too late? Brieve is just up the road from us.
  10. Hi everyone. Just found this thread and it is very interesting. We moved to the Dordogne 2 years ago and have been trying to get our BMW R1100S's French registered ever since. Mine is a 2004 bought new by me and my wifes is a 2001 bought second hand. I asked BMW UK for a C of C for them and was only given one for mine. This is a European document for the factory. The prefecture in Perigueux will nor accept it and insist that I ned one from BMW France. BMW France want me to pay around 150 euro for one for each bike. I don't understand why as the C of C even has the Puissance fiscal on it. Does this happen in other departments apart from the Dordogne? We will run the bikes on UK lates, something I don't like to do, until we get this sorted. Does anyone have any advice for me? Bob Bike blog on : http://bikesindordogne.blogspot.com/
