  1. Sorry I seem to out of synch, my pages got mixed up I have replied to an earlier comment.
  2. It's not a matter of belief, we all believe and can see he wrote it, but we can all see in these threads, and I can add to the evidence that you CAN get French insurance for a UK plated car, (I haven't got it, but I was offered it and chose to buy a French car instead and disposed of the UK car),  just because "Honest John" says so in the Daily Telegraph (my normal first choice of newspaper so this is not a dig at that) doesn't make it right. That would be like saying that Jeremy Clarkson is an ideal role model for any driver. Just go on further down the same page and see his (Honest Johns) views on older drivers and Italians !
  3. Well the first problem is the same one I encountered in South Devon 7 years ago, I can't get an ADSL line because of the lack of numbers in our small village, So I am condemned to "Bas Debit" until such time as that changes. The second problem is one I am glad to say I have found a way around today. After 2 months of getting my slow line, I suddenly couldn't download pdf's, this is using the MSN hotmail site through the Orange browser, so I have gone back to using Outlook as I did on Broadband in UK, this works much better on the service provided, and I can download. I am glad I have the hotmail address because waiting for the Orange mail page to open is a nightmare, and I haven't got long enough to live to be sitting around watching paint dry.
  4. Wherever Polly went, this thread has been going on so long that by now she has moved in,  raised a family, completed the harvest and is thinking of moving on, so this thread could become a continous loop of Terry Pratchett like proportions and we could all be trapped,,,,,,,,aaargh where's the door
  5. I am told by a very good friend of mine who is French, that this is what they want, new, simple, low maintenance,  and  easy to resell. He tells me me that all the the problem "character" buildings they are saving for us 'rostbiffs', at suitably inflated prices as to what a French person would pay. Your evidence indicates he may be right.
  6. It's not a matter of size of  any of the body parts, it's a matter of anyones convenience, as I said earlier the alternative to staying out in the middle lane when there is slower and broken traffic in the inside lane, is that the same arrogant idiots who think they have a god given right to have the road clear before them like moses parting the waves, will also not move over when you want to come back out of the inside lane at 75 mph (approximately !), so it driving defensively if you like, in defence of the right to get somewhere at the speed and convenience you decide, not what someone else does.
  7. What a relief Daktari, to know that the arrogant overtskers were actually only doing 85 not in excess of 90, or 80 not 85. Or when I am going  along  at 70, which does happen, I am actually only doing 65 and so is everybody else, the whole world with the same defect in their speedometers regardless of make and manufacturer, and type of speedometer.  Sounds like I am the only one in step again.
  8. It's the only reason I can think of for the way they behave, I have seen it so often, and you have as well probably, they come screaming along ducking in and out of the middle lane, coming right up behind you and cutting back in often less than a cars length in front, and they do this until they out of sight in the distance. In the mean time the outside lane is relatively empty. Don't tell me they are pulling over because the Highway code says so, if the Highway code meant so much to these guys they wouldn't be doing 85 / 90 + in the first place.  Also, when Mel says middle lane hogs cause tailbacks, what he means is that middle lane hogs cause some people to drive at closer to the speed limit than they want to.
  9. Yes Mel but you haven't answered the question, why has anybody travelling at what is considered to be a dangerous speed, in the middle lane, got any right to feel affronted because the whole world will not get out of their way ?  And if you are in the inside lane and want to get out to overtake a slower vehicle it's the same arrogant speeders that will not move over to let you out. So, if there is a frequent slower vehicle in the inside lane, you can travel at a more consistent speed in the middle lane. It's amazing the amount of people that still think it's ok to do 90 in the middle lane because nobody will see them there !.
  10. OK, while we are this kind of mood, tell me what you think of this conundrum. There is always a lot of moaning about "middle lane hogs" in the UK, so tell me you wise birds, if someone is doing 75 mph (therefore illegally) in the middle lane, and someone else comes storming up at a faster speed, has he or she got any right to be annoyed by the "middle lane hog " just because his illegal speed is greater.  ???
  11. And yet, avinalarf, people keep asking for it, and people keep supplying it  ???
  12. http://www.notaires.fr/notaires/notaires.nsf/V_TC_PUB/ENGLISH-HOMEPAGE I wasn't completely accurate, but read it for your selves, open the link and click on the relevant section.
  13. I am not sure about what you would be liable for on the sale of a UK asset whilst a resident in France, but it sounds like income of some sort to me and income of any sort if you are a French resident is taxable. As far as your main residence in France, if you sell in the first 5 years, any profit you make over what you paid for it is taxed at 60%, after 5 years it goes down at 5% per annum until after 15 years you can keep all the equity tax free.
  14. Cooperlola,  don't worry , as for the inheritance tax, no,  it makes no difference, and don't confuse it with wealth tax, as I don't have any, it's not an area I know about, but doesn't wealth tax only apply if you move it to France surely you cannot be taxed just for having it ? You can definitely be taxed on it's income whether you bring to France or not.
  15. Do you have to have a minimum qualifying number of posts before people acknowledge you have contributed ?
  16. As far as I know, UK inheritance  is always taxed in the UK therefore within the tax agreement between Euro countries you cannot be taxed twice. The capital then becomes taxable on it's earnings whether they are earned in UK France or Timbuctoo, as the French tax all French citizens (which you are for this purpose if you live full time in France) on Worldwide income.
  17. You're doomed if you do, and doomed if you don't,  if I do then he or she will turn out to be colour blind, lazy, will over charge me and never turn up, If I do it myself then it will end up a colour or shade not accepted by the local Maire or the wrong kind of paint, and I will get the fashion police after me
  18. This thread appears to have cornered the market for cynical masochists, I am beginning to feel somewhat guilty about our 30 year old "pavilion" that needs nothing more than a coat of paint,  will I feel better if I do it with a 1" brush standing on 1 leg ?
  19. Before we get too far from the original thread, whatever happens it will probably appear to be one sided, because in reality, the same driving experience I described earlier enables me to say that the number of high speed French cars flying past me on the motorways of the UK is approximately none, whereas whilst doing only about 15 % of my driving in France has enabled me to witness more incidents of the the opposite than I care to remember, and before the French tightened their laws I was also guilty of doing speeds in France I would not have done in the UK. So although I detest the present UK government, the real answer is closer to home.
  20. I think you will find it is already active, over the last 4 years I have been driving regularly in France on business, so I have kept an ear open for it. I am fairly sure that as of last summer, if you transgress in France, you will pay the "on the Spot" if stopped, or you will be contacted if not, but either way you will get the 3 points on your license as if the offence was commited in the UK.
  21. It's human nature that everybody will try to justify their own decision by "selling" it to you, and I am, to some extent just the same, but it is wise if you are looking at an area that is significantly different to that which you are used to, to go there and rent for the 6 months of the most extreme season, or for 12 to get a taste of everything it can throw at you, then make a decision. It may be ok for a week or 2, but a bit of a blow if you find you cannot put up with the mosquitos, or you develop "prickly heat" at some time after moving in.
  22. A good or bad thing to be surrounded by Daily Mail readers ?  is that what you mean ? I can imagine being kept up at night by the gnashing of teeth, and the beating of plough shears into swords.
  23. It's very difficult not to get parochial as once again London seems to get the best deal again. The rest of the country have to pay the highest rail fares in Europe, on what can be less than good service to get to London, but Londoners have a high speed service to Paris.
  24. Getting back to the original thread, "where to live", 300 days of sunshine can sound like paradise, but it can also be like hell. My wife and I lived on the Algarve for 6 years, and I can tell you that day after day of 30 degrees plus can be very wearing and difficult to get on with. It is easier when you are younger, we were in our 40's then, and I worked, mostly outdoors, but there were days when you prayed for some relief, or just to see a green hedge. Having lived in Singapore and Hong Kong, and holidayed in the Perpignan area I can tell it's great to have real seasons.  Which is one of the reasons we have gone for Normandy, it can be hotter and colder than the UK, and just as wet, but it is genuinely more comfortable
  25. 2 things,  first the Telegraph, much as I love it and have bought as first choice for many years, is like most of the media organisations it generally sees a smaller market than we think, and is usually based around it's home turf. so, as for the BBC as well, it is generally a South East England based opinion or guess. I have just spent nearly 8 months watching the Telegraph spin on about the housing shortage and large percentage values going on houses, when in reality in our Devonshire town my house was going down in price and we have eventually sold for 10% less than we started out for. So much for price rises. Second, any adjustment that may be seen in the price of French houses can be nothing but a drop in the ocean compared to what should happen in the UK. With the average UK house price now higher than 5 times the average wage some "readjustment " has to happen, and I for one will put a small bet on with anyone that it won't be wages that rise high enough to redress the balance. If I can sell a 3 bed bungalow in a good size garden in Devon, and replace it with a very similar property in excellent condition in Normandy for less than 50% of the price, with 4 times the garden, then there is not much wrong in my mind with French prices.[:)]
