1. As someone who left the forum for a while on returning I found Richard51s comments to be rude and offensive at times. Another post that I made about comments between two members concerned WB and Norman and if I remember correctly, it was Mint who put me right on the relationship between the two. So WBs posts could be read as being in a light-hearted way. If I read the situation correctly, Richard51 posts irritates WB and he responds. But comments on this thread seem to indicate Richard51 does the same thing to other members and I will add my name to it. WB has been on the forum for a long time and the problem seems to have only started with Richard51 joining. Hoddy sorry you are moderating on your own. Someone who I think would be good in the posts is Mint.
2. Our French bank is split in to regions. Our region is SW and if I want to use the debit card in the North then.....the debit card is rejected. Still, a UK card with no commission and bank rate conversion does the trick. Ah, yes the cheques in supermarkets. Thire use seems to have diminished and the pin and chip card is being used more and more. Plus as time has passed they only have to search through their bags to find the card, they no longer also have to search for the piece of paper with their pin code on.
3. A number of years ago my OH surprised me with a night flight from Gatwick up the North Sea to near the Arctic Circle to hopefully see the Northern Lights - unfortunately hope evaporated. The flight back wa noce down the North Sea and then to the West there was a very bright orange glow. We were told that it was Edinburgh. Where I live in Lincolnshire the local authority decided that to save money they would switch some of the street lights off at midnight. Howls of protest: 'we no longer feel safe' etc A couple of years on total silence on the matter. The density of lights could well be reduced. As for astronomers perhaps in a large number of areas it is best to be a radio astronomer. From the night images it surely shows that something needs to be done about external lighting.
4. Not long after I joined he forum I became concerned about barbed comments between two members. I mentioned my concern in either a post or it may have been a PM to another member. I was informed that the two members kept an eye out for one another and it was just friendly banter. Since, I have enjoyed reading the banter not just between the two but between other members. It takes this forum from being a 'dry' forum to one that answers serious problems with a mix of humour making it a very pleasant experience. However, like most forums one has to just put up with the trolls and normally the best thing to do with a troll is to ignore them. Do not rise to their bait. Hopefully, they will get bored at getting no reaction and migrate to another forum.
5. We used our own Notaire - no extra charge than if both buyer and seller use the same one. The legal documents I put through Google Translate. Whilst the translation may not be 100% perfect nothing came up that caused us to want to have a translator then do it. 3k for the UK firm sounds like a very nice little earner - did you pay anywhere near 3k when you bought your last house in the UK? Bet their sales pitch was full of dangers if you did not use their services.
6. In the UK the trend seems to be to install average speed limit cameras. First camera picks up the car and then the subsequent ones calculating the average speed over each section and if it is exceeded then a fine issued. Howls of protest from some claiming they are not fair - in what way? Travel on roads with these cameras and virtually everyone is driving within the speed limit. As for the 80km/h limit - seems no one has told those in dept 31.
7. I have been flashed by a speed camera when I have been driving below the speed limit more than once and naturally no fine. Can only assume that the cameras sometimes get bored, flash someone who is not breaking the Law and then snigger thinking of the protestations of the flashee 'I wasn't doing anything wrong'.
8. 'Does that mean they plant stories there :) ' Perhaps useful the manure that is in some of them. Interesting take on yesterday by the DM. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-the-papers-49820055
9. Interesting BB Liked one of the 'Lux sucks' items: Their football team has failed to qualify for every World Cup since 1934. Whereas one of the teams from a country of the UK has won the World Cup every other year. Anyway, the Daily Mail will lead with 'Stray cat found new home'.
10. The BBC Internet News each day sows the front pages of the major newspapers. Proves very interesting how they sometimes do not lead with the main events of the previous day. Perhaps the DM is the main one. Anything pro Brexit (inspite of the stance of the new editor) is prominient. Anything, such as Yellowhammer publication, does not show on the front page.
11. Slightly off track: Oh dear Cajal - HP Sauce is now made in that quintessential UK country...the Netherlands. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP_Sauce
12. Perhaps there should be a 'give us £3 per month to send CONDOMS'.
13. So they predict that lorries will be held up in ports for 2 or 3 days........so that is 2 or 3 days they cannot transport goods so, surely, there will be shortages because lorries will not be able to transport as many goods in a specific timeframe because they are idle in the ports....... Wonder if they will install parking meters on the M20?
14. No personal plans but just thinking about anyone planning or having to travel to France soon. Bonzo says UK out on 31/10 (even if he breaks the Law and no doubt the subsequent Court case). We have had the rabies antibody blood test done for our dog but how does anyone with a dog get it back in to the UK after 31/10 (if he does it) without a UK vet fitness certificate? Utter shambles.

Boris

Boris can only do what the PM (that is Puppet Master) Cummings tells him.
16. Although not affecting this case but this is something I have just come across whilst searching for something else - trailer registration in the UK https://www.gov.uk/government/news/register-your-trailer-if-you-want-to-take-it-abroad
17. As far as I am aware a trailer being towed by a French registered vehicle where the trailer weight is up to 750kg the trailer carried the vehicle registration. Over 750kg the trailer requires separate registration. In the case of UK registered vehicle the trailer carries the registration of the towing vehicle - from the car towing the small trailer to the tip to an articulated lorry. Naturally, there are requirements for registering a UK registered Vehicle where it is kept in France into the French system.
Paul, I do not disagree about Boris the Puppet. And here is the government's own advice to people to prepare for no deal:https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/sep/01/get-ready-for-brexit-government-launches-information-blitz I hope you continue to be able to bring your doggies to France without too much bother[:)]
We had the blood test for rabies anti-bodies carried out in December....£160, that did include the certificate to show he has the correct level. Reading the latest guidance it seems that all that is required is an inspection by a UK vet 10 days before travel and the dog (cat etc) can re-enter the UK up to 4 months from the vet visit. No mention of a visit to a vet in the foreign land so looks like they will miss out on the current visits. Interesting bit on BBC News last night whereby a businessman AND a BBC financial reporter did not know a term used by the UK Government. Still, 8 weeks to learn and put in to action.

Mint you wrote 'Much as I dislike crude labelling of people, I think that "Boris the Dictator" might not be too out inaccurate.' Sorry, I disagree and to my mind it is "Boris the Puppet". Seems that Dominic Cummings is the Prime Minister / Dictator. Just wonder what will happen if the UK leaves without a deal and disaster happens?......I shudder to think.
21. About 12 years ago got stopped by customs as I drove along the A64. I was travelling from Tarbes having collected a decrepit UK hire van from being repaired. Was a little way past one of the turnings to go to Spain. Thet did a fairly quick inspection and were pleasant. They then told me that a lot of drugs are smuggled through France from Spain to the UK using old vehicles............ Saw a TV programme recently on which it was stated that the UK is now self-sufficient in cannabis!
22. Just seen this - what happened with these considerate buyers? A very nasty experience.
23. Further to my posting, talking to people around here most people are having problems with reception so could be clouds and weather conditions. Ours seems fine today.
24. WB you are very close to the UK. Just looked here as normally no problem with reception. Arrived just under 2 weeks ago (SW France) and fun. We have had bad weather at times but even when the weather has been fair problems. At the start could get BBC2 HD. Re-aligned the dish and evening fine and next day nothing - apart from channels on the wide beam. Have been wondering should I replace the LNB or have they tweeked the satellites again....dish is 1.2m x 1.3m
25. Oh dear, dear, dear Idun: 'Program' It is accepted in the case of a computer 'program' in English English but in connection to TV etc then it is programme and program in American English
