  1. So many hours are spent before the journey planning the route - perhaps better to use the time doing other things. Modern sat navs collect traffic information and so will take you off of the motorway to avoid the queue because of the pile up that you would otherwise sit in for many hours. Places of interest on the way - press the POI button (Points of Interest) on the sat nav and take your pick. GPS satellites were put up by the military - if paper maps were superior think the military would not have bothered and still use paper maps. Unless you have large scale paper maps then unfortunately, that third turning on the left that you took was down a very narrow lane not shown on the map and there is nowhere to turn. Also, perhaps not a very good idea to be looking at the notes on the fag packet whilst driving - dangerous and an offence. I presume albf you dress in fig leaves rather than these modern things called clothes?
  2. Just read this that GS referenced: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vote_Leave I find the last paragraph extremely disturbing. If itwas in, say, Zimbabwe then there would be all sorts of criticism of the tactic. Obviously, Vote Leave did not trust free and open speech so needed to stop that and add telling lies to win. I am perfectly happy to accept decisions when they have been made fairly - is disrupting meetings of the other side and telling lies being fair? Of course there has to be criticism of the smugness of the other, losing side.
  3. 'It also remains to be seen what happens with Scotland.' Perhaps Westminster should have a chat with Trump about wall building. Hadrian would be extremely chuffed if someone finished his. 'You might add the Libdems smashing an ex-Con Brexiteer in a remain constituency.' With the Conservatives not putting up a candidate it rather limited choice. As Goldsmith decided he was an independent then conservative voters had to choose another party. They could vote for Comrade Corbyn and his Unity party, or the LibDems minibus party. Perhaps it would have been more sensible voting for the 4th placed candidate.
  4. 'Don't get me STARTED about sat navs. The best invention ever for lazy stupid people. WHAT IS WRONG WITH A PAPER MAP ????. Flipin eck. '. Perhaps we should have two versions of this forum, one for lazy stupid people and the other for active extremely intelligent people. That would be one version of the forum for all of us with the exception of albf and the other for him/her.....one can hope.
  5. albf: 'How on earth does anybody need a Satnav in France ? Guessing I have travelled most here in France.... (I am a logistics expert.....did I tell you that)...... I have never needed a dumb idiot computer to me where I am and where I need to go. ' I presume that you do not need a ferry or the Shuttls to cross the Channel, you just walk across.
  6. Idealdeux welcome to the forum and how lucky to get Idun in full flight :) I am the other person referred to, look at: http://services.completefrance.com/forums/completefrance-forums/cs/forums/3441778/ShowPost.aspx which is a post that I made about this and raised Iduns blood pressure then. My form stated put down your NIF or put 'NA' if you do not have one. They returned the form with a circle around 'NIF' in the question with an arrow to where it has to go. Clearly French bank employees have their brains removed as part of their induction otherwise they might wonder why the question allows for 'NA' to be put. In 'pommes' reply to my question he/she put the references to the various EU documents. This is the webpage for the UK regulations: In English https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/tin/pdf/en/TIN_-_country_sheet_UK_en.pdf In French https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/tin/pdf/fr/TIN_-_country_sheet_UK_fr.pdf This is the French regulations: In English https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/tin/pdf/en/TIN_-_country_sheet_FR_en.pdf In French https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/tin/pdf/fr/TIN_-_country_sheet_FR_fr.pdf And about TIN: In English https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/business/tax-cooperation-control/administrative-cooperation/tax-identification-numbers-tin_en In French https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/business/tax-cooperation-control/administrative-cooperation/tax-identification-numbers-tin_fr I did as Idun suggested and contacted HMRC - note phoning starts off with a game of snakes and ladders. A computer asks if you have registered for self assessment. Answer no, and it tells you to go to the Internet and set yourself up and you slide down a snake and the automated voice says 'goodbye'. Second time say you are registered for self assessment and provided you avoid the other snakes along the way you will climb up the ladders until you speak to an actual human. The person I spoke to did not seem amazed at my request and said that a letter would be sent out stating that I did not have an NIF or UTR in UK terms. I also asked if I could pass her on to my wife as she would also need this but was told that would not be necessary as we were linked on their system and she would send out a letter for her. The return deadline set by our bank was 6 December. Yesterday morning I wrote a letter explaining why I could not enter an NIF pointing out that the French and UK systems were different, that I did not have to complete a self assessment and enclosed printouts of the above webpages pointing the bank to the key passages. I also said that if I ever received the letters from HMRC that I would forward these. Went to the Post Office and sent the forms, letters and enclosures by Tracked and Signed. In the letter I asked that they reply stating that the forms had been completed correctly. Then came back and observed the sky for flying pigs. Early afternoon and the postman arrived bearing letters from HMRC so another letter enclosing the letters from HMRC and back to the Post Office to send them off. Best of luck
  7. A deDietrich came with the house when we bought it. Unfortunately, when we left one autumn to go back to the UK I forgot to turn down the thermostat, the oil ran out, the boiler froze and the heat exchanger did not survive. I replaced it with a boiler and burner from Leroy Merlin for, if I remember, less than 1000 euros - the sales chap recommended signing up for their loyalty card and saved an extra 10%. Could take a lot of years to get your money back on any better efficiency of the deDietrich. The boiler we have now is far noisier than the deDietrich but I could add some more insulation.
  8. Or if you are using Chrome it can translate other languages to English (or whatever you want) automatically. With all the worry she could become Oma Merkel
  9. No, I am sorry, I agree with Jean-Claude Juncker. Citizens of the EU should just leave the EU Commission to carry on doing things their way for the benefit of all in the....Commission. It is very difficult dealing with citizens who will not do what they are told. We would use naughty corners but do not have anywhere near enough. And the French need to look in to Jean-Claude Juncker eyes and listen 'YOU WILL NOT ELECT MARINE LE PEN'.
  10. If it was a planned tactic well, it worked. If not, this has happened so many times before - do these political types never learn! Perhaps the notebooks should have instructions 'CLOSE THIS NOTEBOOK BEFORE LEAVING MEETINGS'
  11. Have a look here: https://en.selectra.info/energy-france/suppliers/edf-customer-service-helpline
  12. Confession time - I have always wanted to learn to tap dance (and no, not the joke 'but I fell in the sink'). I cannot sing. A friend organises an annual 'do' at a nearby restaurant that includes karaoke. How do so many people think they can sing!!!!! Really do need ear defenders.
  13. Perhaps if you are not in to woodwork then firstly buy the tools, have an attempt, have another....yes, it is better but not good enough to put on display so have another go and think that will do. Then when you tell people 'I made those', they comment 'I can see that'. Place the new tools somewhere out of the way because they will never be used again. The end result is it costing more than ones made commercially :)
  14. All these facts and figures and then the next with that magic word 'REVISED'. So the wonderful upward figures are 'revised downward'.
  15. How about having the gates sent as a kit of parts, i.e all machined just not screwed together. Easier to transport and should be a great deal cheaper.
  16. Send Dave your address and he will pop down and make them for you :) Nothing complicated in what you want so save some money and get recommendations of someone local. PS don't sort this out too quickly enjoying being amused by Dave.
  17. Isn't there a local carpenter who can make the gate for you?
  18. From van an article in the Spectator: The SNP has also blundered in its argument for a second referendum by saying that it wishes to stay in the European single market. Given that 64 per cent of Scottish exports go to the UK market and only 17 per cent to the EU, it is clear which union is more economically important.
  19. Dave don't just keep your rants to Xmas - wonderful read and so true.
  20. Thanks Idun. Thanks to everyone else.
  21. French Bank: 'Numero d'Identification Fiscale (NIF) ou indiquer Non Applicable (NA) en l'absence de NIF delivre par les autorites du pays de residence fiscale.' The document referenced above states: 'The most recent quasi TIN is the unique taxpayer reference (UTR). The format is a unique set of 10 numerals allocated automatically by HMRC for individuals who have to submit a tax return. ' I do not have to submit a tax return and therefore do not have a TIN but my French bank wants me to have one!!! If also states: 'However, not all resident taxpayers, or all nationals, are issued with a UTR or NINO. ' But NA is not good enough for the bank....where do I bang my head?
  22. Had a form from our bank to fill in which we did, returned and they have returned to us. It asked for an NIF or to put NA which we did and is the reason for the return. As UK resident any idea what this number would be?
  23. Every cloud has a silver lining and for anyone wanting to convert Sterling to Euros you get a few more.
  24. Quote: 'One big problem with the wall idea, apparently, is that the land close to the border is privately owned, so will have to be compulsorily purchased. I can't see that getting done in 100 days, but I guess you never know. He does have previous for this in Scotland, although I understand he was not entirely successful. ' Surely, he will require Mexico to pay for it and build it on their land :)
