  1. We used Elvia, the French branch of Mondial Assistance, earlier this year for a trip to Australia.  Found them far cheaper than any UK option.  Have sent you a pm how to contact them.
  2. Might like to try the Melane, 1 Place du Temple, Niort, just off the street with the dragon.  We have eaten there on a number of occasions and found the food to be excellent and the atmospher really good.  The telephone number is 05 49 04 00 40
  3. Is anyone aware if there is an equivalent of the Consumers Association in France.  We purchased an oven 18 months ago from a local electrical retailer (part of a large chain).  For the first 12 months we were unable to use the grill as the door would lock and it was impossible to open it for at least 30 minutes (lots of well done food).  The after sales man spent so much time at the house he was fast becoming part of the family.    The retailer then decided to seek advice from the manufacturer and was advised it was a manufacturing fault and all the electronics had to be replaced.   Will not bore anyone with how long it took to get the new parts, but suffice to say the first lot didn't work and a new set had to be ordered.    We are now unable to leave the kitchen with anything in the oven as it switches itself off when it feels like it.  Also it is impossible to adjust the temperature as this has stopped working.   Registered letters have been exchanged demanding that the oven be properly repaired or replaced, but the retailer puts the problem with the manufacturer and of course the manufacturer passes it straight back.   The manufacturers head office in Paris doesn't even reply to our faxes and letters.     Husband is all for junking the oven and starting again, but it was a pretty expensive piece of equipment and I would like to exhaust all avenues first.   Any ideas.
  4. Went to see our local tax office today who told us that anyone over the age of 60 who fills in a French Tax Return is liable to pay social charges on the interest earned from any savings (gross).  Social charges are not levied on UK state and private pensions   There is a very good article on the Daily Telegraph website explaining exactly what the position is.  He wasn't able to tell me what we were actually getting for our money!!
  5. I know I am being particularly thick  but could someone please explain to me whatCRDS's are.   I have absolutely no problem with contributing to the economy of my host country, but thought we were doing our bit with our Tax Habitation, Tax Foncier and both French and English Income Tax: (we are currently paying in both countries as Paris has lost our FD5s   As we arrived with 121s we thought our health insurance was covered by a reciprical arrangement between the two countries   Thought we had done our homework before coming to France; but certainly overlooked this one   Are we likely to have any other nasty surprises
  6. Sorry I don't understand.   We have no earned income, just state and private pensions and a small amount of interest from UK savings.
  7. Please can somebody help.  As UK pensioners resident in France are we liable for the payment of Contributions Sociales.  We were surprised to receive quite a large demand today. We thought the system was the same as the UK,  where you no longer make NI contributions if you are not in receipt of any earned income . rents, etc.
  8. Does anyone know a structural engineer in 17 or someone who can throw some light on why our cellar is flooding.
