  1. Thanks for the information on what to buy  lads ! .....As I have also experienced the  "going off " problem I was thinking the answer was a pair of trainers to get to the wall  faster !
  2. I read recently that tons of Foie Gras comes from Hungary  where it is cheaply produced and then  it's re packaged in France and sold on  .......I always thought of France when Foie Gras was mentioned .but appently its big business in Hungary too .
  3. Reading this I feel so lucky ! ....When I bought our agent was in the next  village down the road and was very much on the ball !....Money was transferred to the Notaire and into the coffers in Lucon treasury ... Notaire paid the agent.... paid the people I bought the house... from  and at the end of the work paid me back 780 euros as it was not such a big job as he expected .....and his account even showed the cost of every stamp ! . I saw the house in May 2005 sat in with the Notaire and seller and  picked up the keys 18th August .  The Agent explained that was what would happen .....and that was what did ...so no complaints.... and I only wish houses I have bought and sold in the UK had "gone through "  so smoothly !
  4. Why not when contemplating letting out your property for a"long term " let  you state to your client that you will require from them their authority in writing ....(. it may only be six lines ...) to do a credit check with " Experion " or some other organisation which holds everybodies credit rating ....Any past dodgy history the client has they will know will be revealed...if they  will not co operate with you in this request.....you have your answer ! This family of 5 I should think must be known .
  5. I would try and get some of the older tractor drivers to stop driving through the village with their grandchildren sitting straddled on the bonnet ....some two at a time ...the thought of what would happen if one fell off under the wheels does not seem to enter their heads .
  6. Thank you for the link Clair......L.Aguillon sur Mer  mentioned on the report is only 4K from my place and they have been pumped out  so its been a bit rough in that neck of the woods.....Its so flat I can imagine the power  and phone poles that lean over anyway must have gone down with the winds ....I have asked a pal to pop round and check out the house  but as I am on a bit of a hill cant see flooding   like the poor folk of L,Aguiullon being a problem ...
  7. How come 40,000 homes in the Vendee are  without electricity ? is there a lot of storm damage or what ?....or was it a power outage caused elsewhere ?
  8. Is it ten quid if you have a return booked ?
  9. Mark ..........the Lavadora FAR front loader range is from 179.90 E  the 1200 spin speed one is 249.90 ...you collect from Conforama ...just off the roundabout by the Flanneries Shopping Center on the  La Roche ring road as you head for Nantes  if you have not seen it .
  10. As you are also in 85.....check out Conforama in La Roche sur Yon....we ended up with a slim top loader from there and my wife the expert thinks its great ...It was one of the cheaper range ! they have plenty to choose from .
  11. My house insurers require shutters to be lockable and so far I have had not heard of any burglaries in the village . As we are on the edge of the village I suppose we would beone of  the easiest to burgle and then  away into the countryside ..We have living opposite an old man on his own who always seems to look out when a vehicle pulls up...so I doubt we would get any  " visitors " arriving unseen. .My neighbours seem to know within minutes when we are back  in the village ...so their being nosey... I look on as being to our advantage . On my last visit I was asked if the young  couple with the two children who used the house in the summer  was my son ? .so they dont miss a thing .
  12. Thanks for the information everybody.......there  is a Point P in Lucon  (85) which is my nearest ....so will be paying them a visit...never knew it was there  I always  headed for Mr Bricolage . The "lantern " is exactly what I have seen on roofs . My house had been newly roofed before I bought it and the roofer was not local  so just cant pop round his yard .....I will be also searching for the matching tile with the hole in it as well.
  13. I am planning to get a  gas water heater fitted and the flue vented out through the roof.tiles . The Brico Depot  materials book shows along with the  flue pipe accesssories a  "Chapeau Inox ". Its an ugly thing that will look out of place on a new terracotta tiled roof. I have seen on some roofs a terracotta "Hat " (round conical roofed thing with vertical slots in the side) sitting on the tiles .....which I assume is a flue vent /cowl inserted into flue pipe ..? ......if so its got to be better than stainless steel . cant find one shown  on the net anywhere ....anybody know who sells them in France ..and if in fact what I am looking at on roofs is a water heater flue vent ?
  14. Hell is likely to freeze over before we see it.....but what is required is the French authorities or the  EU to direct  the closing of an international crossing point  by industrial action to be unlawful and in need of urgent action to re-open it if its closed .They could then immediatly  put the army engineers  into the jobs of the port workers to ensure the ships can dock ...load... and unload .....They could act to  remove blockading  farmers barriers ...and the navy fishing boats  if they try and close the ports...After all what s the loading up of a ferry with passengers and freight to do with fishing or ploughing a field . but its the first place they think of heading to if they are unhappy with their lot...  Oh well .....it will soon be 2007.. I wonder how many Dover shut downs next year will bring .. I say 4...  starting with Easter.?
  15. Who's land do you aquire to park up a 1000 lorries on  for days ?.... You  cant let them just drive into Dover to find out that the ferry is not running again and there is another strike on because a French cleaner has been sacked like this last one....the trucks have to be stopped before they drive into the town ...The motorway it there .. that what else do you suggest they use ?
  16. I used to enjoy seeing the deer on the edge of my Dorset village ...during the rutting season last year two came through a hedge just as I was passing at  40 ....Peugeot 406 estate........written off .......and now there is a couple less  ...so ....I am not so keen on the Bl....y things now.  I have been told that human hair will keep them away from your garden so a visit to your local hairdresser for some greasy smelly sweepings off the floor might help.....as for what you put them in ?......old tights cut up in little bags and tie them on your boundry  fence / hedge ? got to be easier  to handle than Lion s..t
  17. Thanks Dick...........now got a photo of a "hairy one "
  18. Dont laugh .........I need to know the name of the breed of the big donkey the French used to cross with horses to get mules for the French army . They have long coats that  hang like dreadlocks .............  I want to find a photo  but a search of  " Big French Donkey " on Google is likely to produce some very wierd  sites !!!
  19. The safe key ! ....so I could go back  into the ashes for the deeds and the insurance policy  !
  20. I see Flybe Southampton  no longer list La Rochelle as a destination . or  Easyjet from Bristol for 2007 ...only  Ryan Air now from Stanstead .....whats made them drop La Rochelle was it  underused  or too expensive to fly into ?
  21. Does not hurt to put up a few notices in all languages Dick ....even the deranged.might be able to read them .... lets try  to educate our new arrivals into taking up angling as a sport.....and feed the swans not feed on them .
  22. No Dick ........Its scuba gear and a spear gun and go in after them ......recently  a guy hungry during a religious fast tried to eat a swan raw after knifing it in a park ....so more signs and translations are going  needed there it seems  or we will be swanless as well.
  23. I also came accross the regionalised nature of CA when I paid in a cheque for over 700 euros into CA Lucon (85). The staff were great could not have been more polite.....only some two weeks later when on line and  I noticed the money was not in my Britline account did  the difficulty with this show up. Britline had to chase the payment and get it transferred after I had faxed the payment slip copy  to them and they had phoned Lucon . I was then instructed NOT to pay money into other CA branches and to send the cheques to Britline . I have thought of moving my account to a branch which is in the village next to me ....but I have yet to find it open when I am passing .
  24. Bob has a point ...........the UK has now got signs in Polish being put up on lakesides to try and stop them from nicking the carp......France may  also end up carpless one day  when her doors have to be fully opened to the EU  if she does not act ....translations ARE  going to be needed . When the Chief Constable in North Wales is going to recruit trained officers from Poland to put on the streets  you can see the direction it has to go in . How long before we get France advertising for British bobbies to deal with us ?
  25. Chief ....what you say is correct...and was one of the reasons I was happy  to get out of renting .....I was getting nothing but hassle from tenants and the none paying ones  were being advised by the Council not to vacate the property untill I had obtained a court order to get them out....Never mind the fact they may be dissruptivt to others living next door .and they owed me for weeks of none paid rent . It was policy to advise bad tenants in the private sector to ignor orders to vacate  and force landlords to go through the County Courts for eviction orders  . All the council  got  from their actions in my case was to see one more property in the town no longer available for rent to those who needed a home .
