I'm in the same situation as sbfilm, except that I live in the UK. I am considering moving to France and currently drive trucks as a career. Do I need to get a French licence to drive trucks for a French company? My level of French is I can read and write very well but speaking and listening not so good and am looking at ways of improving it.

Chatting to an engine driver would also make the journey for me.

Just back from two days of cross-channel trucking to Northern France. I parked in an aire overnight and wasn't attacked in any way. Next week I'm doing some longer distance cross-channel trucking, possibly 5-6 days. Will see what comes of parking in an aire overnight then.

I drive trucks as a career and take regular breaks to avoid DVT.

I find the TGV quite nice too.

When I first got my licence I wasn't entitled to drive HGVs but have since changed it. -
The only things that interests me in the UK railway scene are the Channel Tunnel + Rail Link and steam trains. I think that those working on French railways have every reason to be proud of their jobs - they couldn't have chosen something better.

I often have to make long distance journeys in my lorry, sometimes outside the UK and often I am away for several days, but always park in lay-bys or service stations at night. I suppose I will be targeted by thieves one day.

I have never been subjected to a gas attack, nor have I heard of such an incident.

I always sleep in the cab of my truck and have the windows closed and lock the doors. That way I feel more secure even though as it has been said a door could be forced open or a window smashed.

I find I get to sleep better if I park next to other HGVs, after all I'm used to their noise.

I have a plastic licence and found that to drive HGV's, I had to get another licence. -
I don't think that would happen in France.

I love driving lorries too much to risk being the target of a hijacking, robbery etc
-
Thanks for the info, guys

I drive lorries as a career and find when I need to sleep en route that parking with other lorries is safer.

I drive HGV's for a living in the UK and think it is a great adventure.
