Thanks Baz.  You've confirmed what we suspected.  Most of our trips will be by car but sometimes it's nice just to nip over on a cheapie for a day or two. I'd be very interested to hear though of any future developments through Clermond which seems to have been avoided by all the cheap airlines.

We've just returned from our 5th trip to St Etienne having finally bought our much longed for maison secondaire in the Livradois Forez area (63) only to find dear Ryanair are stopping the service from 4 June and transferring it to Grenoble.  Drat to put it mildly! Can anyone out there suggest an alternative route on a cheapie airline? Have never paid more than £30 return so realise this is going to take some matching.  There doesn't seem to be anything not via Paris into Clermond, Limoges looks much more expensive, and Grenoble is at least a 2 hr drive away.  Lyon may be possible but I can never seem to find anything very reasonable.  Alternatively, has anyone experience of SNCF fares to Issoire? Guess the moral is, never rely on Ryanair being a permanent fixture.
