1. Hi Chancer, Many thanks for your input ...in searching for your recommendation I happened across THIS which told me all I needed to know. I keep forgetting just how helpful the guys here and U Tube can be.
2. This summer's project is to frame out and line one of our attics. The timbers are decidedly 'rustique' and will want changing in ten years or so but we need living space quickly and this looks to be cheapest option. I am looking for any good advice with regard to using metal framing to line / straighten the underside of the roof structure ..particularly how one uses the various clips and struts which seem to be available for the purpose. Any pointers to good links, publications etc. would be very much appreciated. While I am on...I have an old manual well pump..(I think the make is 'Tourane') I can't find any reference to the pump though any ideas? Thanks in anticipation..
3. Nice to see you are sorted. I had a similar issue however it was due to the mains pressure being too high and overcoming the bladder in the Ballon..One pressure control valve later we are fine
4. Nearside = nearest the kerb. Offside = furthest from kerb Nowt to do with cricket
5. I always used Makita when on my tools however when my Makit batteries got tired for my drill driver about 8 years ago I bought a stop gap 'Erbauer' 14.4 volt drill from screwfix I think. It has done a sheldload of work and is as good as new ...batteries both hold a good charge and the unit feels as torquey as my 18v Dewalt. As a good budget range of tools Erbauer gets my vote.
6. Where can I buy one of the fans that are rotated by the heat from a hotplate? or the design for one and I shall make it? Thanks in advance etc
7. Many years ago we restored some original side hung windows by removing the front of the rebate to make full thickness then fitting  an external beading (pinned and glued with polyester glue)  which created a slot large enough to permit double glazing in the 'new rebate' retained by matching  internal bead but only pinned , not glued. The solution gave us the look of an old window with at least some of the insulation offered by double glazing.
8. Lapeyere in Laval...friendly staff, helpful, nothing too much bother.....
9.

If someone had said a stratification calorifier...would have been easier to visualise :-)
Listen, I have quite enough trouble, at my age, remembering (let alone spelling) the words I used without summonsing up even bigger ones! Besides which the calorifiers I knew in the building I worked in were only about the size of a very big DHW cylinder. p
Ummm the Domestic hot water cylinder is a calorifier....just not a vey big one and generally without strat pumps etc....although mains pressure domestic calorifiers are now coming with de- stratification devices and there are some retro fit ones too.
10.
''Also if this is a flow and expansion tank (don't think permitted in France) '' How do plumbers in France pipe up a solid fuel fired CH cooker / boiler ? ie Rayburn / Stanley / Wamsler etc.
Make up unit - index rad without TRVs - ballon and expansion vessels would be my guess
11. If someone had said a stratification calorifier...would have been easier to visualise :-)
12. Normally I am a Clairophile but sat here in the Tundra that that is Hampshire I can feel my support wavering ;-).....only kidding! This time last year my cherry trees were in full bloom and I was sweeping up blossom......they aren't even in bud. I am hoping whenever spring arrives it is with a bang ........I look forward to the end of May beginning of June......two weeks of France.
13. I read this all wrong - you have an inch and a quarter steel pipe - going to flexi? why not simply introduce a threaded valve on the steel pipe and you can specify what you want on the other side whether you want a mating face / thread or captive nut? With the pipe size you have I am thinking hotch potches of fittings aren't going to look tidy and likely to be expensive - I would get down to your desired size quick as I can and 11/4 is a hefty make up. Also if this is a flow and expansion tank (don't think permitted in France) I wouldnt want flexis which may soften and kink if the water gets very hot. Also out of curiosity if this is a header tank...how are you filling it? is it via a ball valve?
14. Cheers Gyn . I am thinking that rather than waiting for the Ballon to heat up (we isolate our electrics when not there) I like the idea of being able to run a bath or shower when we get in after the long drive and electric showers are non starters on limited French supplies,
15. I never really thought about it but we have a couple of ancient ceramic / bakelite pullcord fittings formerly used above beds to switch the main lights in the roooms...I imagine they are 100 years old.
16. A taper into a parallel is not a great idea if that's what you are faced with. I would go taper / taper bushing with a parallel male end to make off into your fitting and seated correctly. Boss white and hemp in the tapers and copper / fibre , dowty in the fitting as per other correspondents
17. Does anyone here have any experience of running a small hot water only multipoint type heater on Propane butane mix 'Big Bottles'..I am interested in finding out what the regs require in terms of bottle storage and if auto switchovers on tandem sets are permitted.
18. If the Ball and chain button is 'live' then yes you can. If the ball and chain remains greyed out then you can't. Process is pretty much as Russet house said...you need the full address URL of the site or page you want to link to and the object word which will be your link Highlight the word which will become your link and then hit the ball and chain button...you will be given a box which already has the http bit of the URL in. I usually just cut and paste the whole URL from the browser at the top of the page (or from properties if it's an image I am linking to) so I delete the existing http and paste the whole address. Hit enter Job done. If this doesn't work....I have included a link to a you tube article purporting to tell how to do it on an ipad (I haven't bothered watching it though....as I haven't got an i-pad and am very lazy ;-) )
19. Did you mean like this?
20. Formica do a composite laminate board in the uk not sure if stocked in France. We used to install showerwall panels which came from Italy (can't remember the make) I would suggest trying bathroom retailers to see if they can give you a steer to an appropriate merchants.
21. As TPs aren't shapers of policy either....I shall wait and see.
22. I wouldn't necessarily believe Wickes...they aren't the shapers of policy. I bought a shedload off B and Q last year
23. Our old one will be a garden trailer when I get the chance to do it
