  1. We've had really good service from La Poste and we send approx. 10 parcels each week throughout Europe. The only real problem we've had was the recent price confusion. We found the economique service too slow so we always use prioritairre now. Also, one Coliposte package was delivered to us (we were the return address on the package!) but that was sorted quickly.
  2. Thanks for posting that link, looks great. I shall have a play on there with the kiddies on the weekend :-)
  3. Quote "zeb" ".....and I don't know if you have all noticed but La Poste have changed the international parcel post service." There has been (and still is) a lot of confusion. As of the 1st March La Poste said that Tarif Courrier no longer existed and any parcel had to be sent via Colissimo International (which meant a minimum charge of 15 Euros). BUT La Poste are now sayng that Tariff Courrier does still exist, so the same parcel they quoted me 15.00 Euros to send last week only cost me 3.50 Euros this week! The information is taking a while to filter through to all offices though.
  4. Does anyone know if there is a limit to the number of business names that you can register under one micro-enterprise? Also, how can I find out if a business name is already in use? I've scanned through our local 'pages jaunes' and searched on info bilan but where else could I look? And what's the position if we start to use the name then find someone else is using it? Thanks :)
  5. The most used are the Large Collins Robert which I can barely lift and the smaller Robert Collins which I find the best/easiest. Various smaller ones/pocket dictionaries/phrase books etc., one kept in the car, one in my bag etc. Children have Larousse. Various other grammar/conjugation/verb books.
  6. We use hifx for our UK to France transfers and are very happy with them. I'm not sure when you are tied to taking a regular contract with HIFX but we have been using them for irregular transfers for the last couple of years and we haven't got a contract with them. I don't know what the minimum amount is though. I found their website confusing but spoke to them on the phone and they are very helpful. Definitely recommended :) We had a nightmare with moneybookers, they couldn't recognise our bank account details and their customer service was terrible. We ended up having to draw the money in 2 cheques (euros) but because the cheques (although ordered from Moneybookers Paris) came from outside France we were charged by our bank to deposit them. I'd be careful about having two Paypal accounts as I believe it's against paypal regulations to have an account in a country other than your primary residence, and I've heard of them freezing the money under fraud regulations so probably not worth the risk.
  7. Thanks for the info., think I'll stay with my UK licence for the moment at least.
  8. As France is now my main home do I have to change from my UK to a French driving licence? Is there anything I should be aware of? e.g. are the conditions the same on the French as the UK licence with regard to towing a caravan/trailer? Thanks :)
  9. Pretty much as everyone else has said. We live in a town in Brittany and we haven't been welcomed with open arms, but then neither are the French families that move into the area. We've made friends, both British and French, but noticeably the French friends we have made are either new to the area themselves or have moved into the area from elsewhere. The 'locals' have established networks and although they are polite and will exchange pleasantries it goes no further than that. Our immediate neighbours have always been welcoming and very curious about us. The problems we have experienced have been with some other British people. Some have been too keen to be our 'best' friends overnight which we find a little unsettling. Also, we have found that the 'keeping up with the Jones' attitude has travelled over from the UK with some ex-pats here. Our lives here are quite similar to our life in the UK, after all we haven't changed, we are happiest with just having a few close friends. We are polite and speak French when we can, we don't expect anyone to speak English. We use local services but we are not overly friendly. We haven't experienced any hostility but I don't know if this is partly because we are Celts living in Brittany. I have heard some hostility expressed by the Bretons toward the English and Parisians - but mainly where they are second home owners.
  10. Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know :) I think I'll just get on with it and get a quote for fitting an exterior aerial.
  11. We can get a couple of french channels on our portable TV with an indoor booster aerial, and we have TNT coverage in our area. Sooooooo if I buy a TNT box will it work?
  12. Thanks for the reply :) I'll see what I can find out.
  13. Thanks for all the replies and info. :) Patricia - thanks for the offer of lessons but I'm too far from you. I'm self-employed so I don't think I'm eligible for free lessons with GRETA. Also, as I have limited time available if I do have any lessons I need to find someone who can fit in with me. Hastobe - thanks for the info. we also had some lessons before we left the UK and similarly ours were around 20 GBP for an hour at our home.
  14. Thanks for the replies. I'm self employed myself and I just can't justify paying 35 Euros per hour at the moment. Also, as I have now found out that the person isn't registered I'm not happy to use them anyway.
  15. I was wondering what's the going rate for French Lessons. I was quoted 35 Euros per hour for one-to-one lessons at the Teachers' house - that seems a lot? or is it? Thanks :)
  16. Does anyone know if a forklift driving qualification would be accepted in France. It's: CSCS Operatives H&S Test. Licence to drive Industrial Counterbalance Forklift accredited by RTITB (or something like that!). Does anyone know if this is valid in France? or where I can try and find out? Thanks :)
